Ars Electronica Festival 2026 guide: tickets, hubs and routes

Ars Electronica Festival runs in Linz from Wednesday, September 9 to Sunday, September 13, 2026. The useful starting point for a first visit is no longer POSTCITY. This year's festival is organized around three city-centre hubs: OK Quarter, MED Campus and the Danube Triangle, with evening events at places such as St Mary's Cathedral and Posthof.

Allow two days if you want to see art, attend talks and spend time in Deep Space 8K without racing across Linz. A single day works when you choose one main hub, add one nearby area and accept that the rest belongs to another trip. Buy the ticket for that plan, then remember that an online ticket still has to be exchanged for a festival badge before it opens the paid venues.

The short answer: a FestivalPass makes sense for two or more days, while a Day Pass suits one carefully planned day. Start at OK Quarter if you want the Festival Walk, use MED Campus for the free art-and-science and youth program, and reserve the Danube Triangle for the Ars Electronica Center, Lentos and the riverfront venues. Exchange the online ticket for a badge first. If Friday night matters, FestivalPass+ is the only pass that includes Big Concert Night.

This guide was checked on August 30, ten days before the paid festival opened. Individual program times and registration availability can still change, so save the live program rather than relying on a screenshot from weeks earlier.

The major 2026 change: there is no POSTCITY hub

Old visitor advice often starts with POSTCITY, the former postal distribution centre beside Linz Hauptbahnhof. That advice is not useful for 2026. The festival has moved into a more distributed downtown model after POSTCITY, and the three current hubs solve different parts of the day.

The move is more than a venue swap. It changes how much can fit into one day. OK Quarter and the Danube Triangle are close enough to combine by foot and tram, while MED Campus needs a deliberate transfer. Posthof, St Mary's Cathedral, Anton Bruckner University and other evening locations add another layer.

Treat the official locations page as the source of truth. A blog post, saved map or forum answer that still sends everyone to POSTCITY is describing a previous edition.

Which Ars Electronica ticket should you buy?

The ticket names are similar, but the access differences are important.

The FestivalPass+ and FestivalPass cover the main locations, exhibitions, Festival Walk, conferences, performances and workshops. Both include Nightline and selected museums. The plus version adds Big Concert Night, which has no separate single ticket in 2026.

The Day Pass is the better financial fit only when your day is disciplined. It includes the Friday Nightline when bought for Friday, but not Big Concert Night. A person trying to fit OK Quarter, MED Campus, Ars Electronica Center, Lentos and an evening satellite venue into one day will spend too much of the ticket moving.

Children under five enter free without a ticket. Visitors aged 6 to 19 can buy a five-day FestivalPass u19 for EUR 19. Under-19 visitors also need a EUR 0 ticket and wristband for the Festival Walk, and anyone under 15 must be accompanied there.

Some workshops, selected performances and Deep Space 8K sessions require registration even when the pass covers admission. A pass removes the entry charge; it does not create a seat in a full session.

Exchange the online ticket before your first session

An online ticket is not the final door credential. Exchange it for a badge at one of the three hubs, or at the Ars Electronica Center for eligible pass types. Bring identification because the ticket and badge are personal and non-transferable.

The main exchange points operate on these published hours:

Festival Walk buyers exchange their ticket at OK Quarter for a day wristband. Arrive before the first reserved session rather than using its start time as the badge-collection target. A queue, ID check or wrong entrance is much easier to absorb at 09:30 than at 10:58.

Choose a day by what happens after 18:00

The daytime exhibitions repeat across several days. The evening program is what should decide a short visit.

Tuesday's free Pre-Opening Walk moves through several venues. The published sequence starts at Lentos at 15:00, reaches the University of Arts at 17:00, Francisco Carolinum at 18:00 and Salzamt at 18:45, then finishes at the Ars Electronica Center from 19:30 for its 30th birthday program. That is a better orientation route than trying to learn the city during a paid day.

Friday is the music-heavy option. Big Concert Night takes place at Posthof for the first time, and only FestivalPass+ includes it. Nightline follows at Posthof from 23:00 to 04:00 and is restricted to adults aged 18 and over.

Saturday requires a choice. Futurelab Night is at the Ars Electronica Center. Sonic Saturday is at Anton Bruckner University. Linz Klangwolke takes place in Donaupark. Pick the one you would regret missing and build the afternoon nearby.

A realistic one-day Ars Electronica route

This route suits a first visit focused on exhibitions rather than a full conference day.

09:30: collect the badge at OK Quarter

Starting at OK Quarter removes the online-ticket problem before the day becomes busy. It also puts the Festival Walk at the beginning, when attention and walking pace are still good.

10:00 to 12:30: complete the Festival Walk

The organizer estimates 2 to 2.5 hours. Do not schedule a registration-only workshop halfway through it. The route is flexible, but it works best as one block rather than a set of rushed fragments.

12:30 to 14:00: eat and decide between MED Campus and the Danube

This is the decision that keeps the day sane. MED Campus is the better choice for create your world and art-and-science work, especially with children. The Danube Triangle is better for the Ars Electronica Center, Lentos, Hauptplatz and riverfront installations.

14:00 to 18:00: explore one second hub

At MED Campus, admission to create your world is free, so a paid pass is most useful when the wider program there contains a session you want. In the Danube Triangle, reserve Deep Space 8K before building the afternoon around it. Walkable proximity does not guarantee admission to a full presentation.

After 18:00: use the day's evening anchor

Wednesday points to St Mary's Cathedral. Friday points to Posthof. Saturday needs the Futurelab, Sonic Saturday or Klangwolke decision. Sunday is better for a quieter final circuit and an earlier finish.

This route leaves material unseen. That is the point. A successful one-day visit produces a coherent set of experiences, not proof that a badge entered every building.

A two-day route that covers all three hubs

Use the first day for OK Quarter and MED Campus:

1. Exchange the badge at OK Quarter at 09:30.
2. Complete the Festival Walk before lunch.
3. Take bus 45 or 46 from Mozartkreuzung toward Gruberstrasse, or bus 12 from the main station side, for MED Campus.
4. Spend the afternoon with the art-and-science and create your world programs.
5. Choose an evening close to the day's final venue.

Use the second day for the Danube Triangle:

1. Start at Hauptplatz or the Ars Electronica Center.
2. Reserve Deep Space 8K if it is a priority.
3. Cross the river once, then group Lentos, Hauptplatz, University of Arts and Salzamt by walking direction.
4. Leave enough time for the evening venue transfer.

This sequence avoids bouncing between MED Campus and both sides of the Danube. It also leaves room for a late program change, a full room or an artwork that deserves more than a photograph and a hurried exit.

What each festival hub is for

OK Quarter

OK Quarter combines OK Platz, Festival Walk and Ursulinenhof. It is the practical first stop for badge exchange and the most obvious hub for a visitor who wants the curated walking route. Tram stops Mozartkreuzung and Taubenmarkt are the useful public transport anchors.

MED Campus

MED Campus holds art-and-science work and create your world. Admission to the latter is free. This is the strongest family option because children can spend time making and testing rather than moving through a string of adult talks. Reach the Gruberstrasse stop with bus 12 from the main-station direction or buses 45 and 46 from Mozartkreuzung.

Danube Triangle

The Danube Triangle spans both sides of the river. It includes the Ars Electronica Center, Stadtwerkstatt, Hauptplatz, Lentos and Salzamt. Its badge desk is at splace, Hauptplatz 6. The useful tram stops are Hauptplatz and Rudolfstrasse.

Do not read "triangle" as one building. Crossing the Danube and moving between museums still takes time, and a scheduled presentation can turn a short map distance into a fixed deadline.

How to visit Ars Electronica for free

A paid badge is not required for every worthwhile part of the week.

• Follow the Pre-Opening Walk on Tuesday, September 8.
• Attend the free official opening at St Mary's Cathedral at 19:00 on Wednesday.
• Visit create your world at MED Campus.
• Visit the University of Arts Campus Exhibition around Hauptplatz 6 and 8.
• See the public work "Flood the Zone with Courage" on Hauptplatz during the festival.
• Consider Linz Klangwolke in Donaupark on Saturday.

Free does not mean empty. Arrive early for a fixed-time opening and check capacity or access notes in the live program. The invitation-only Prix Ars Electronica award ceremony at Design Center on Thursday is not part of the public free route.

Getting to Linz and moving between hubs

Linz Hauptbahnhof is the simplest rail arrival. The festival FAQ points visitors to OEBB and Westbahn services. From Vienna Airport, direct trains run to Linz at least hourly according to the organizer. Linz Airport is about 10 kilometres from the city and connects by bus, train or taxi.

Trams 1, 2, 3 and 4 reach the central hubs. Use Mozartkreuzung or Taubenmarkt for OK Quarter, and Hauptplatz or Rudolfstrasse for the Danube Triangle. MED Campus needs a bus transfer to Gruberstrasse.

The FestivalPass+ and FestivalPass include LINZ AG public transport in the Linz core zone from September 9 to 13, excluding Pöstlingbergbahn. The official ticket table also lists a core-zone public transport ticket with the Day Pass, but check the exact validity shown on your chosen ticket before travel rather than applying the five-day rule to every product.

Driving is the weaker default. The organizer says parking is difficult and not every venue has it. A car also creates a second routing problem after every evening event. Rail, tram and walking fit the distributed city layout better.

Luggage, payments, water and accessibility

Linz Hauptbahnhof has lockers in the main hall. Tourist Information at Rathausgasse 2 lists 28 free lockers measuring 50 by 32 by 70 centimetres, available for up to 24 hours during staff hours of 10:00 to 17:00. The Ars Electronica Center and several museums also have lockers during their opening hours.

Major cards are accepted at festival sales points. The OK Quarter information desk also accepts cash, and food vendors generally take both. Carrying one backup payment method is still sensible when a phone battery also holds the ticket account and route.

Reusable water bottles are encouraged. Pets are not allowed, with an exception for assistance dogs.

The main locations are generally barrier-free, but the organizer warns that some exhibition areas are not accessible. That is not a full-access guarantee. Contact the festival with the exact session and venue before buying a route around it, especially when lifts, seating or step-free transfers are essential.

Visiting Ars Electronica with children

MED Campus is the strongest anchor for children because create your world is designed around participation and is free. The EUR 19 five-day under-19 pass also makes a multi-day family visit possible without buying a full adult pass for each child aged 6 to 19.

Keep the day shorter than an adult conference itinerary. One hands-on block, a proper meal and one visual evening event is usually more workable than a tour of all three hubs. Check age rules on individual performances. Nightline is 18+, and the under-15 Festival Walk rule requires an accompanying adult.

Strollers may fit the main accessible routes, but the warning about inaccessible exhibition areas still applies. Use the venue listing for each program item and ask the organizer about a specific room rather than assuming that a barrier-free main entrance settles the whole visit.

Apps and files to save before the festival

• Official Ars Electronica program: save the live program and the pages for every registered session. This is the source for room and time changes.
• LinzMobil: LINZ AG's official app provides live departures, route planning and ticket sales. Registration is only required for buying or storing tickets.
• Rail app or account: keep the OEBB or Westbahn booking used for the trip to Linz available offline.
• Offline map: download central Linz and pin OK Quarter, MED Campus, splace, Ars Electronica Center, Posthof and the main station.
• Battery copy: save the ticket email, badge exchange point and accommodation address outside the browser.

The organizer publishes enough live information that an old PDF can become the wrong tool. Save the permanent program URL as well as the few items you have committed to.

Mobile data during Ars Electronica week

Mobile data is useful here because the ticket account, live program and Linz routes all sit on the phone. It does not guarantee a seat, remove a registration requirement or make a full venue accessible.

Roaming eSIM's public catalog returned 16 Austria plans when checked on August 30. The listed plans used A1, 3 and Hutchison coverage, included fixed-data and daily-data options, and showed top-up support on most but not all packages. That gives visitors a direct Austria option as well as regional choices without pretending that one allowance suits every trip.

The practical edge over venue Wi-Fi is continuity between the station, hub transfers and evening locations. The trade-off is that package terms vary, so read the chosen plan rather than assuming every option can be topped up or used as a hotspot.

Is one day enough for Ars Electronica?

One day is enough for the Festival Walk, one second hub and one evening event. It is not enough for all three hubs, substantial conference time and a satellite venue without constant rushing.

Wednesday works for the free cathedral opening, Friday for the music program and Saturday for the widest evening choice. Pick the evening first, then build the daytime route around it.
