The official Beijing public-holiday page confirms the October 1 to 7 break and the two adjusted workdays. Treat any page calling 2026 an eight-day combined holiday with caution. That was the 2025 arrangement, when Mid-Autumn Festival overlapped with National Day.
Should you change a China trip that overlaps Golden Week?
Changing dates is sensible when the trip is still flexible and the main goal is a quiet first visit to the Forbidden City, Great Wall, Terracotta Warriors or Zhangjiajie. Moving the same route into mid-October removes the national holiday from the plan without abandoning autumn.
Keep the dates when changing flights would cost too much, you already hold the necessary transport and attraction reservations, or the National Day atmosphere is part of the reason for going. Then simplify the route. A full week in Beijing, Shanghai, Chengdu or another large base is easier to repair than a chain of one-night stops.

Public discussions repeatedly ask for a quiet town near a major city. That is a weak assumption. Places such as Hangzhou, Suzhou, Zhangjiajie and popular Guizhou villages also draw domestic visitors. Choose a place because its transport and booking plan works, not because an English-language guide calls it lesser known.
Use the new 12306 reservation window before normal sales open
The most useful 2026 change is Railway 12306's advance reservation service. The August National Day booking notice says passengers can submit a reservation request from 60 days to 17 days before departure. The system processes requests from 20 days to 16 days before departure. The usual rules inside the 15-day sales period remain in place.
For an October 1 train, the reservation-request cutoff is September 14 and processing runs from September 11 to 15. For an October 7 train, the request cutoff is September 20 and processing runs from September 17 to 21. These dates are calculated from the published day ranges, so check the 12306 app for the exact train and account state.
What the 12306 reservation request does
The reservation is a request, not a confirmed seat. The app provides a precise mode for exact trains and a flexible mode for time, journey-duration and seat-class ranges. An account can hold up to three pending reservation orders. One order can cover up to 19 passengers and can include options across two consecutive days.
Rank acceptable trains in the order you would genuinely take them. Broad flexibility can improve the chance of getting transport, but it can also produce an arrival time that breaks a hotel check-in or attraction slot. Read each option before submitting.
When 12306 fulfills a request, payment is due by 23:00 that day. The notice says the system cancels an unpaid order automatically. Three consecutive payment failures or voluntary cancellations of fulfilled requests within 30 days can block the account from using the reservation feature for 90 days.
Passport and boarding preparation
China Railway's official passenger FAQ confirms that foreign passengers can buy real-name tickets with a valid passport. Keep the passenger name and document number identical to the passport. The same document is used for station checks and boarding where e-tickets apply.
Do not treat a third-party booking request as a train seat until it has a train number, passenger record and confirmed status. Save the confirmation offline, but carry the original passport. Reach large stations early enough to find the correct entrance and complete any manual document check without turning the platform cutoff into a race.
A Golden Week itinerary that can survive a failed booking
The safest pattern is one base, one reserved anchor and one flexible half-day. Trying to reproduce a normal three-city itinerary during the holiday leaves no room when a train, attraction or road transfer fails.
Before October 1
Move into the city where you plan to spend the week by September 30. Buy food and basic supplies near the hotel, verify the Chinese address, and test the route to the nearest metro station. Confirm every ticket against the passport name and save the booking screen.
October 1 to 3
Use confirmed timed tickets only. If the morning attraction is unavailable, switch to a neighborhood route rather than searching for another famous sight across the city. Tiananmen Square, the Bund, major theme parks and headline museums can be especially demanding during the opening days.
October 4 to 6
Keep the base fixed. A prebooked day trip is reasonable only when both directions are secured and the operator has a clear pickup plan. Leave enough time for queues inside the attraction and at the return station.
October 7
Stay local if possible. If you must move, keep the onward flight or train on a separate day. A same-day rail connection to an international departure has little protection when the first leg is delayed or the station takes longer than expected.
October 8 onward
Do not promise yourself that every queue disappears on Thursday morning. Some travelers extend leave, and the October 10 workday changes the normal weekend rhythm. Use October 8 as a transition day and move the most important attraction to October 9 or later when the itinerary allows it.
Book attractions by passport, not by wish list
China's high-demand attractions do not share one release schedule or one booking system. The Palace Museum, the Terracotta Warriors and other controlled sites publish their own current rules. Check the official page for each place rather than applying one seven-day or fourteen-day rule to the entire country.
Keep one passport record for every visitor ready before the booking window opens. A screenshot is useful after purchase, but it does not replace a rotating code or live identity check when the venue requires one. If an attraction has no available slot, change the day instead of buying an unverified reservation from a person claiming special access.

China's government visitor service guide says foreign travelers can use the English 12306 website or app and pay with supported Chinese or foreign bank cards and mobile-payment services. It also describes Alipay, WeChat Pay, metro tickets, Didi Greater China and RMB cash as visitor options. Support still depends on the bank, account verification and the particular merchant.

Data matters most when 12306 changes an order, a payment app requests verification, a driver calls, or a timed ticket must be shown. It is still sensible to save hotel addresses, passport-ticket records, maps and emergency contacts offline. Crowded stations and remote attractions can have inconsistent reception, and no provider can promise capacity at a specific place and time.
