eSIM by AT&T now includes US calls and texts, but you still have to buy after arrival

August 5, 2026. AT&T's short-term visitor eSIM now offers unlimited talk and text with selected United States plans. That is a material change from the May launch announcement, which said the calling feature was coming later.

The live offer also has promotional prices through August 27, 2026. US plans start at $3.99 for one day, while a data-only pass covering the United States, Mexico and Canada starts at $20.99 for seven days. The important limitation has not changed: an eligible visitor must be physically inside the United States to complete the purchase.

The practical point: eSIM by AT&T is a strong option for an eligible visitor who wants unlimited phone data on AT&T and, in the United States, a plan with carrier calls and texts. A Roaming eSIM has the clearer advantage when you want to buy before flying, choose a smaller fixed allowance, compare more than one listed network or avoid AT&T's US-location and international-number checks.

Current eSIM by AT&T prices through August 27

AT&T launched the service on May 18 for international visitors traveling in the United States, Mexico or Canada. Its current eSIM by AT&T page displays the following game-day prices through August 27, 2026.

The three-country plan does not have a one-day option. AT&T's launch announcement said its listed prices included taxes and fees, while the current legal terms contain a general notice that additional AT&T fees and government taxes may apply. Treat the checkout total as the final price and recheck it after the August 27 promotion ends.

Each listed plan includes unlimited phone data and 5GB of high-speed hotspot use. US talk-and-text access costs more than the corresponding data-only plan. The North America choices remain data-only.

What changed after AT&T's May launch

The May 18 AT&T announcement described unlimited talk and text as a feature that was coming soon. Several high-ranking launch articles still repeat that earlier limitation and show the original prices.

AT&T's live product page and current legal terms now say visitors can buy a US plan with unlimited talk and text. That does not make every plan a voice plan. The cheaper US plan and all three-country plans are still data-only.

This is why checking the plan label matters more than relying on an older review. A visitor who needs a local calling option should choose the US talk, text and data row, then verify the number and calling setup in the app before depending on it for a hotel, restaurant or transport booking.

Who can buy the AT&T visitor eSIM

AT&T restricts the service to people who do not live in the United States. Its terms say residency is determined by the phone number used for eligibility, and the product page requires an international phone number.

The phone must also be:

• eSIM capable;
• unlocked by its current carrier;
• 5G ready;
• dual SIM enabled; and
• equipped with an open eSIM slot.

AT&T says most iPhone 12 and newer models meet the general device requirements, but it still performs an eligibility check before purchase. An iPhone model number that supports eSIM is not enough if the handset is locked, lacks an open profile slot or fails AT&T's check. Android support also varies by model and sales region. US residents are not eligible for this visitor product. It is also a smartphone service, not a tablet, wearable, car or travel-router plan.

Can you buy eSIM by AT&T before flying to the United States?

No. You can review the packages from abroad, but AT&T says the purchase must be completed while the customer is physically inside the United States. The Connect on Demand app verifies location for eligibility, and the purchase needs an existing wireless connection.

This creates an arrival dependency. Airport Wi-Fi, a working home roaming connection or another travel data line may be needed before the AT&T eSIM can be bought and downloaded. Save the hotel address, airport transfer and eligibility instructions offline instead of assuming the purchase screen will solve the first connection.

AT&T's terms allow an eSIM to be downloaded up to seven days before the selected start time, but the same terms say the download remains subject to the location restriction. In practical terms, this can support advance scheduling after you are inside the United States. It does not create a way to buy the plan from another country before departure.

Downloading the profile starts the activation process, which can take up to 15 minutes and requires a stable connection. The visitor must then select the AT&T eSIM as the primary data line and, for a talk-and-text plan, as the default voice line. A plan day is a full 24-hour period after activation, not a calendar day ending at midnight.

What unlimited data, video and hotspot actually mean

AT&T calls the phone-data allowance unlimited, but it can temporarily slow data when its network is busy. Coverage and 5G are not available everywhere, and the terms also apply network management and fair-use rules.

Video is managed separately. AT&T says it aims to deliver standard-definition streaming at a maximum of 2Mbps when both the device and plan are 5G compatible, or 1.5Mbps for other customers. Some content bundled with video can also be affected.

Hotspot use has a firm shared limit:

• every pass includes 5GB of high-speed hotspot data;
• the limit is the same for a one-day and a 30-day pass;
• AT&T does not sell extra hotspot data for an active visitor plan; and
• after 5GB, hotspot speed falls to a maximum of 128kbps for the rest of the pass.

The 128kbps connection is not a dependable laptop-work allowance. If hotspot use is important, estimate the phone and tethering needs separately with the travel data calculator.

What the US talk and text plan includes

The voice option is narrower than the words "unlimited talk and text" may suggest. AT&T's current terms say the US voice plan includes calls within its domestic coverage area and calls from that area to Canada and Mexico. Other outbound calling is not included, and Wi-Fi calling is not available.

Text service covers standard SMS and MMS within the United States and from the United States to Mexico and Canada. Messages are limited to 1MB. The service terms do not promise international texts to other countries.

The United States, Mexico and Canada plan has no carrier talk or text service. Apps such as WhatsApp, FaceTime and Signal can use its data, but that is different from a mobile number and normal carrier calling. What to check for Canada and Mexico travel

The three-country pass provides data in the United States, Mexico and Canada, but it is not simply the US voice plan with two extra countries. It has no one-day option and no included carrier calls or texts.

AT&T also says off-network 2G data speeds may apply. Its product-page footnote notes that AT&T does not have on-network coverage in some countries, including Canada. Actual service therefore depends on the supported partner network, the location, the device and congestion.

Once a region is selected, it cannot be expanded. A US-only visitor who later adds Canada or Mexico must buy a new plan for the wider region. AT&T permits a maximum of 90 consecutive days of this visitor service.

Turbo Live is an event add-on, not extra coverage

Eligible eSIM by AT&T customers can reserve Turbo Live for selected busy events. AT&T describes it as priority for phone data within a specified event area and time.

The current terms make its boundary clear. Turbo Live does not add data, extend coverage, improve calls or texts, or boost mobile hotspot use. Performance is not guaranteed, the benefit may be hard to notice during peak congestion, and it stops or pauses outside the event area or window. Inventory can also be limited.

That can be useful at a supported stadium, but it should not be the only plan for opening a ticket, finding an exit or meeting another traveler. Save those details before joining the crowd.

Refunds, deletion, transfer and top-ups

AT&T lets customers add another time increment through the app. It does not allow a region to be extended on the same plan, so a different coverage area requires a new purchase.

Refunds are limited to a profile that fails to download or activate. AT&T says non-use after purchase is not refundable. Deleting the eSIM ends the service and requires another purchase, even if time remains. The eSIM cannot be moved to another device, and a lost phone requires a replacement purchase.

These rules make the setup sequence important: confirm eligibility, the selected region, the start time and the correct device before downloading or deleting anything.

eSIM by AT&T versus Roaming eSIM

AT&T has the stronger fit for a high-data US trip when an eligible visitor wants unlimited phone data, direct AT&T service and the option of carrier calls and texts. Roaming eSIM should not claim that a smaller fixed package beats that use case.

The live Roaming eSIM catalog serves a different decision. At our August 5 check, it listed 37 United States packages, 33 Canada packages and 16 Mexico packages. A reloadable US 10GB, 30-day option was $12.08, compared with AT&T's promotional $30.99 for 30 days of US data-only service. The allowances are different, so that is a moderate-use cost comparison, not a claim that 10GB equals unlimited data.

Ten questions travelers ask about eSIM by AT&T

1. Can I buy eSIM by AT&T before I fly? No. AT&T allows package review from abroad, but purchase and download require physical presence in the United States under the current location rules.
2. Do I need an international phone number? Yes. The product is for non-US residents, and AT&T uses the submitted phone number in its eligibility process.
3. Will an unlocked eSIM phone work? Not automatically. It must also be 5G ready, dual SIM enabled and have an open eSIM slot, then pass AT&T's device check.

6. Is hotspot unlimited? No. Every duration includes 5GB of high-speed hotspot, followed by a maximum of 128kbps. More hotspot cannot be added to the active pass.
7. Is phone data always full speed? No. AT&T may slow it when the network is busy, video is managed to stated standard-definition speeds and coverage varies.
8. Does the North America plan include calls and texts? No. The current United States, Mexico and Canada passes are data-only.
9. Can I transfer the eSIM or get a refund if I do not use it? No transfer is allowed, and non-use is not refundable. Refunds are limited to download or activation failure.
10. When is Roaming eSIM a better fit? When you want to buy before departure, need a smaller allowance, want to compare listed network combinations or prefer a country or regional route without AT&T's visitor eligibility rules.
