Banglalink seeks approval for Starlink Mobile: what travelers can use now
Banglalink has completed a Starlink Direct-to-Cell trial in Bangladesh and applied to the Bangladesh Telecommunication Regulatory Commission for commercial approval. The application is a meaningful step, but it is not a commercial launch.
As of August 22, 2026, Banglalink has not announced a retail start date, price, qualifying bundle, supported-phone list or visitor eligibility. The planned first phase is described as SMS and light data for places outside terrestrial mobile coverage.
The traveler decision: do not plan a remote Bangladesh route around Banglalink Starlink Mobile yet. Use an available terrestrial connection for ordinary trip data, keep key information offline and reassess the satellite option only after approval and public customer terms appear.
What changed after the Banglalink Starlink trial
Prothom Alo reported on August 21 that Banglalink completed its proof of concept and submitted an application to the regulator. The report says the trial tested communication in locations without ordinary mobile-network coverage, including Bandarban and Sandwip.
The Financial Express also reported that the proof of concept was complete and commercial approval had been requested. A separate MEA Tech Watch report described an August 2 and 3 field demonstration in Cox's Bazar attended by government and regulatory officials.

The distinction between a completed trial and an approved service matters. Prothom Alo quotes the regulator as saying the trial authorization does not guarantee commercial approval. Until a decision and customer terms are published, there is no product a traveler can reliably activate.
The original agreement planned messaging first, then data
Banglalink parent VEON announced the Starlink Mobile agreement on April 22. VEON said Banglalink planned to begin with direct-to-cell messaging in 2026 and add data in a later phase, subject to regulatory approval.
The newer Bangladesh reports describe the proposed first commercial phase as SMS and light data. That is broader than messaging alone, but it is still not a promise of unrestricted mobile broadband. No public app list, speed target, data allowance, hotspot rule or native voice-call support has been announced.
The technology is intended to work with standard compatible 4G LTE smartphones. That broad description should not be read as a device guarantee. Commercial direct-to-cell services commonly depend on the operator line, phone model, regional variant, software and enabled spectrum. Banglalink needs to publish its own list.
The trial targeted places beyond tower coverage
Bangladesh state news agency BSS reported that the regulator approved a two-month proof of concept in May. The BSS account limited the test to places where terrestrial networks were unavailable and named remote hills, chars, coastal islands and offshore waters as intended use cases.
Those examples explain the value of the project. Bandarban's hills, Sandwip and coastal or river routes can contain stretches where tower coverage is difficult. They do not create a national satellite coverage promise. A commercial map, supported territory and connection conditions have not been published.
The expected offshore reach reported by BSS was a future commercial expectation, not a result travelers can use today. Boat operators and passengers should continue to follow the vessel's safety and communication procedures rather than substituting a proposed phone service for marine equipment.
Starlink broadband and Starlink Mobile are different services
Starlink's dish-based broadband service is already a separate product in Bangladesh. Banglalink Starlink Mobile is a proposed mobile-operator service that lets an eligible phone connect directly to satellites when the participating terrestrial network is unavailable.

Buying Starlink broadband does not grant Banglalink mobile access. Likewise, installing an eSIM does not automatically give the line satellite entitlement.
A Roaming eSIM does not inherit Banglalink satellite access
An eSIM is a digital form of a mobile subscription. Direct-to-cell access is a separate operator-controlled network benefit. Even when a Roaming eSIM plan uses Banglalink's terrestrial 4G network, that does not prove it can use Banglalink Starlink Mobile.
The Roaming eSIM Bangladesh catalog checked at 07:02 UTC on August 22 returned 12 live terrestrial packages. The reviewed package records named Banglalink and Grameenphone, depending on the plan, and did not advertise satellite access. Treat every current card as terrestrial coverage unless its live terms expressly say otherwise.
