Belfast International Arts Festival runs from October 14 to November 8, 2026. Pick your dates around the events you want to attend, then check whether each needs a ticket. The programme includes free outdoor performances and exhibitions, but some free immersive sessions require reservations and one is already listed as sold out.

For an easy first visit, October 17 has two free performances of Parade: The Giant Wheel at CS Lewis Square. If the new immersive programme is your priority, look at the October 28-31 Studio Ulster sessions instead. Those are different trips: neither a single festival entrance nor a general admission pass covers everything.

The official programme lists more than 200 events across 30 venues. That is a reason to narrow your choices, not to spend a weekend trying to cross the whole city. Book one event you would travel for and keep another nearby option that does not depend on a reservation.

Which date should you choose for a Belfast festival visit?

These are selected options, not a complete programme. Prices and availability were checked on October 13; the linked organizer or venue page should be checked again before purchase.

An event appearing within the programme can begin before the festival's main dates or continue afterward. The Academy exhibition, for example, runs until January 3, 2027. Check the individual listing rather than assuming everything closes on November 8.

October 17: see The Giant Wheel without booking

Parade: The Giant Wheel is an outdoor dance and physical-theatre performance built around a 12-foot wheel. Autin Dance Theatre is working with Belfast's Beat Carnival and BEATnDRUM for this presentation. Five performers move around and through the wheel; the programme lists a duration of one hour and ten minutes.

It takes place at CS Lewis Square, not outside City Hall. The festival's venue page gives the address as 402 Newtownards Road, BT4 1HU, beside EastSide Visitor Centre and the Connswater and Comber Greenways.

Choose the 1pm or 3:30pm performance, leave time to reach the viewing area and plan a food break separately. The square's ordinary opening hours do not extend the show's running time. Do not interpret free, unreserved admission as a promise about a particular viewing position.

The performance is non-verbal and highly visual. The event page links Easy Read material and audio notes for preparation. Ask the organizer about the access or viewing arrangement you need, especially if standing through an outdoor performance would be difficult.

Free immersive art: reserve first, travel second

The festival's programme announcement introduces a new immersive arts strand, including a Studio Ulster takeover. The practical question is which session you can attend, rather than whether you can walk into the venue at any time.

TAKKUUK combines Arctic imagery and Indigenous collaborators' stories with music by BICEP. It runs at Studio Ulster from October 28 to 31. Listed sessions are:

  • Wednesday and Thursday: 5pm and 7pm.
  • Friday: 3pm, 5pm and 7pm.
  • Saturday: 11am, 1pm and 3pm.

The listing is free with a booking link. It is 14+, under-18s need an accompanying adult, and the organizer warns of strobing sequences. Check those conditions before treating it as a general family activity. A booking link is not proof that every slot has space.

Lost Communications: Underwater uses marine recordings, live spatial sound and responsive digital environments. Its October 29 and 30 sessions are listed as sold out, with an official waiting-list link. Do not book a trip around receiving a place later. The listing gives a 45-minute duration, 14+ age requirement and warnings about flashing lights and fast-moving visual simulations.

Studio Ulster is not Ulster Hall or Ulster Museum. Save the exact arrival instructions supplied with your booking and plan the return from that entrance. Similar venue names are not interchangeable destinations in a journey planner.

A free indoor alternative for a weekday visit

SPACINGS at SARC is free with no booking required, running October 13-November 10 on Tuesdays to Thursdays, 10am-5pm. Its three works rotate through the period, so a particular installation is not available for the whole run.

The first work, Tunnel by Andrew J Brooks, is listed for October 13-20. M E R C Y follows October 22-29, then Helena Hamilton's On Wanting runs November 3-10. Match your date with the work rather than assuming the exhibition is open on Saturday because other festival events are.

This is an option for a visitor whose weekday plans have room for an indoor stop. Check the university venue directions and access details before setting off. It should not be added to an October 17 itinerary that falls outside its listed opening days.

For a central Saturday stop, A Thirst for Silver at Craft NI runs until October 31, Monday-Saturday, 10am-5pm, with free entry and no booking required. It displays contemporary silver beakers. This is a gallery visit, not a hands-on workshop advertised for every visitor.

Music, walking tours and a longer stay

Orchestra Baobab opens the festival at Mandela Hall on October 14. The 7pm listing is a doors time, not a confirmed finish time. The organizer's GBP30 listing specifies an 18+ standing event; do not use the festival's broad cultural appeal as a substitute for a show's age restriction.

At Ulster Hall, Ed O'Brien's Blue Morpho venue listing confirms October 19 and a GBP49.50 ticket plus GBP3.25 fee, making GBP52.75 before any optional extras. The festival gives 7:30pm; check your ticket and the venue's latest show information for arrival details. This is O'Brien's own performance, not a Radiohead concert.

If you prefer a daytime guided visit, the Oscar Wilde tour meets at Queen's University front gates on October 16, at 11am or 2pm. The published duration is two hours and the ticket price is GBP14. Allow for the full tour and a meal rather than booking an afternoon show immediately afterward.

The Royal Ulster Academy exhibition opens at Ulster Museum on October 18. Its free Tuesday-Sunday schedule gives a longer-stay visitor another indoor option; it is not open on October 17 just because the festival is underway.

Build a route around venues, not a long wish list

For an October 17 visit, make CS Lewis Square your daytime commitment. Add a central gallery before or after it only when your actual transport journey leaves enough time. Do not assume an event across the city is a short walk because both listings say Belfast.

For an October 28-31 immersive visit, secure your Studio Ulster reservation first. Leave a gap for the journey there, check its arrival instructions and keep a separate meal plan. A sold-out show is not a dependable second stop.

If travelling solo, one reserved event can give the day a clear focus without requiring a group or a pub session afterward. For a family, start with the individual age and sensory information, then shorten the day where needed. Our United Kingdom with kids guide covers wider family route choices across the four nations.

The August Fleadh Cheoil was a different Belfast festival. Old Fleadh road closures, shuttle services or late-night arrangements should not be reused as October arts-festival instructions.

Tickets, fees and arriving on time

The festival box office sells tickets online, by phone and through Visit Belfast Welcome Centre at 9 Donegall Square North, opposite City Hall. Its October-November hours are Monday-Saturday, 9am-5:30pm, and Sunday, 11am-4pm.

E-tickets arrive by email. Download the confirmation onto your phone before leaving, and contact the seller you booked through if it is missing. The festival notes that fees vary between venues; compare checkout totals rather than just the price in a programme table.

The conditions of sale say late admission may be delayed and some shows do not admit latecomers. Check before committing to a close connection. They also prohibit photography or recording during shows and require phones or alarms to be off.

Concession prices are not available at every event. Where you need assistance, ask the box office about a companion ticket before choosing seats. A festival-wide policy does not establish wheelchair-space availability for a particular performance.

Transport apps: avoid starting a ticket too early

Use Translink's Journey Planner for current departure options, accessible routing and service changes. It includes live Metro and Glider tracking. Plan your journey home from the venue, not from a central stop that you may still need to reach after the performance.

mLink's ticket conditions distinguish tickets that activate immediately from tickets you activate yourself. Metro and Glider single tickets start immediately after purchase and expire after 45 minutes. Do not buy that single in the morning for an evening journey.

Airport Express 300 tickets have a different rule: activate before boarding, with a 90-minute validity after activation. Its ticket covers that airport service, not every city bus. Follow the selected ticket's instructions instead of applying one activation rule across the app.

The terms say data is needed to get a price and buy an mLink ticket, while activation can work offline. A dead phone is still a problem: you must be able to display a valid ticket throughout the journey. Charge your phone and carry a battery pack if you expect a long day.

No special late-night transport extension is confirmed in this guide. Check the last workable departure before booking a show, especially where the programme gives only a start or doors time.

Check access with the venue before booking

The festival accessibility page has a 2026 heading but still contains a paragraph referring to its 2025 programme and a 2025 downloadable guide. It also lists dated 2026 supported performances. Confirm your exact show and arrangement directly rather than relying on the heading alone.

Ask about the relevant entrance, wheelchair space, companion booking, seating, toilets and sensory conditions. An outdoor, unreserved performance and a flashing-light immersive session require different preparation. Keep the event's warnings visible to everyone in your party before reserving.

For outdoor plans, check the day's weather and take suitable rain protection. Keep an indoor alternative whose opening hours match your date; a closed gallery is not a useful backup to an afternoon performance.

Mobile data for your Belfast plans

Keep the event ticket and accommodation address offline, with a named meeting point if your group splits up. Mobile data is useful for buying transport tickets, checking arrivals and changing plans between venues. It does not replace your charged phone or guarantee access to a sold-out session.

OpenSim's public UK catalogue checked October 12 listed a 5GB, 30-day plan at USD4.76, with top-up support and named EE, O2 and Three networks. Compare the current selected package on the OpenSim United Kingdom page. Named partner networks do not guarantee a particular signal, speed or priority at a venue.

A defined allowance with an eligible top-up gives visitors an option for transport and booking tasks without depending entirely on finding Wi-Fi. Existing home-plan roaming may be the simpler choice if it already includes enough affordable UK data. For an onward trip into the Republic of Ireland, check that destination separately; this paragraph does not extend a UK plan's coverage across the border.

Use the travel data calculator for the full trip, check whether your phone supports eSIM, and follow the installation timing guide before departure.

Belfast programme sources and photograph

Event details were checked against the festival, named venue and Translink sources on October 13, 2026. We will update this guide for material ticket-status, timetable, access or programme changes. Recheck the official listing before booking travel; availability here is a dated check, not a live seat inventory.
