Visitors and illuminated Christmas stalls on Birmingham New Street in December 2008

Birmingham's Frankfurt Christmas Market runs from November 5 to December 24, 2026, around Victoria Square and New Street. Entry is free and does not require a ticket. For the opening weekend, note the later start on Remembrance Sunday, November 8: 1pm.

Christmas Eve needs a separate transport plan. Network Rail has confirmed that no trains will serve Birmingham New Street from December 24 to 28, with services resuming on December 29. The market's final day is therefore not an ordinary rail day trip.

Birmingham Christmas market dates and opening hours

The Frankfurt market organizer confirms the November 5-December 24 season. Its visit information gives these hours, in local time:

DayFrankfurt market hours
Monday-Thursday11am-9pm
Friday11am-9:30pm
Saturday10am-9:30pm
Sunday10am-9pm
Remembrance Sunday, November 8Opens at 1pm

Check for a dated Christmas Eve notice before planning around the final evening. Do not apply Cathedral Square's Christmas Eve closing time to the Frankfurt market; the two have separate organizers.

You can make this a short visit rather than a full day of shopping. Leave space in your plans for a meal or an indoor break, especially if you are traveling with children or someone who finds prolonged standing difficult.

Christmas Eve: New Street has no trains

Network Rail's November 5 announcement confirms the December 24-28 closure for engineering work. It covers trains to, from and through New Street, not just one operator's departures.

For a Christmas Eve visit, check the whole outward and return itinerary before buying tickets or booking a meal. Depending on your route, you may need a replacement bus, a different station or another connection. Moor Street and Snow Hill are separate stations, but their existence does not guarantee a suitable alternative for your journey.

Avanti West Coast's Christmas information describes London Euston services to Birmingham International and replacement buses between International and New Street, as well as connections north toward Wolverhampton. These are route-specific arrangements. Birmingham International is not the city-centre station beside the market.

Avanti also warns that services finish earlier on Christmas Eve. A market visit that continues into the evening must fit the final connection on your actual itinerary, including any replacement bus. Check assistance and luggage arrangements with the operator if they affect your journey.

If your dates are flexible and rail travel is central to the outing, choosing an earlier market day avoids this particular New Street closure. It does not remove the need to check for other engineering work or disruption.

The Frankfurt market ends on December 24. New Street trains resuming on December 29 does not mean the market reopens then.

Arriving by train on other market days

New Street, Moor Street and Snow Hill serve different routes into central Birmingham. Choose the station that works for your origin, rather than adding a change simply to arrive at the best-known name. Save the correct station name for the return journey.

Network Rail says station queuing systems may be introduced at New Street during busy periods. Its advice is to identify several possible trains home rather than rely on the final departure. A train still appearing on the board is not a reason to leave the stalls only a few minutes before it departs.

Allow time for walking out of the market, reaching the station, following any queue and finding the platform. If you have booked a meal after shopping, leave a separate allowance for that walk instead of treating the restaurant's finish time as your station arrival time.

For a wider family trip, the United Kingdom with kids guide can help you keep this outing proportionate to the rest of the holiday. The market does not need to occupy every morning and evening of a Birmingham stay.

A short route through the markets

Start with New Street and Victoria Square, then choose one addition. This gives you time to browse rather than spend the visit moving between attractions.

AreaWhat to plan thereWhat to check separately
New Street and Victoria SquareFrankfurt market stalls, food and a music stopThe day's hours and performance listing
Cathedral SquareIndependent makers around St Philip's CathedralIts own opening hours and Christmas Eve finish
Centenary SquareA booked skating session or a rideAdmission, session time and age or access conditions

Choose an indoor break before everyone becomes cold or tired. Agree on a meeting point outside a busy stall queue if your group splits up, and allow time to return to whichever station you actually need.

The music programme lists Lorna May on Saturday, November 7, from noon to 2pm, followed by Louis Connor from 2pm to 4pm and The Bellagios from 4pm to 6pm. On Sunday, November 8, the published programme begins at 1pm with Julian Potter, matching the market's later opening. Lineups can change, so use the dated listing if a particular performance determines your arrival.

Cathedral Square has its own hours

Christmas in Cathedral Square also runs from November 5 to December 24, 2026, in the grounds of Birmingham Cathedral. Its focus includes independent arts and crafts alongside food and drink. Traders can attend for different parts of the season, so a photograph or recommendation from an earlier week is not a guarantee that a particular maker will be there on your day.

DayCathedral Square hours
Monday-Wednesday11am-9pm
Thursday-Saturday11am-9:30pm
SundayNoon-9pm
Christmas Eve11am-7pm

That ordinary Sunday noon opening is different from the Frankfurt market's usual 10am start. For November 8, allow for remembrance events and check any day-specific access notice before crossing between the two areas.

If local makers matter more to you than another food stop, make Cathedral Square part of the visit rather than adding it only if time remains. You can still keep the outing short by choosing fewer purchases and taking a proper break.

Ice skating continues after the market closes

Ice Skate Birmingham lists November 5, 2026-January 3, 2027 at Centenary Square, with Christmas Day closed. Skating is separately ticketed; free entry to the Frankfurt market does not include it.

The operator lists 45-minute skate sessions, skate hire included, and asks visitors to arrive 30 minutes before their session. Its page gives inconsistent 10am and 11am opening information, so use the actual booking slot rather than an assumed daily first session.

Check the selected date, ticket type and conditions before paying. Children under seven must be accompanied by an adult, according to the operator. Leave time to change footwear and return hired skates before heading for a train.

A post-Christmas skating visit can still be possible within that separate season, but it is not a visit to the Frankfurt stalls. It also overlaps the New Street closure through December 28.

Cash, reusable mugs and visiting with children

The market FAQ says stalls accept cash and card-payment options are available. Carry a backup payment method rather than assuming every purchase will work through one phone or card.

When buying a drink in a reusable mug or glass, keep its green token. The organizer says the refund requires the token and an undamaged vessel; you can return them to a drinks stall rather than necessarily retracing your route to the original purchase. The FAQ's numerical deposit amounts are explicitly labeled 2024, so check the amount displayed at the stall instead of budgeting from those old figures.

Baby changing is beside the accessible toilets on Victoria Square, to the right of the bandstand. For a young child, decide on a warm break and a departure time before starting the visit. An extra food queue can be less appealing once they are tired.

The organizer identifies step-free routes around the market and accessible toilets near the Victoria Square stage. Its parking guidance warns that the Navigation Street multi-storey car park has no lift. If you need a particular access route, plan it from your station or parking place as well as within the market.

Useful travel apps and mobile data

The official TfWM app provides live bus, train and tram departures, nearby transport, journey planning and ticket options. Save the stop or station you need for the return. Use your rail operator's current journey information as well, especially for Christmas Eve changes.

Keep tickets and booking confirmations available before leaving Wi-Fi, and download an offline street map. A saved map can guide you between the squares, but it cannot confirm a delayed train or replace a valid ticket. Bring enough battery for the return journey rather than using the last charge on market photographs.

If your existing mobile allowance covers the UK, you may not need another plan. For an overseas visitor who needs departure updates and group messages, OpenSim UK plans include 1GB for seven days at USD 1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.00. These fixed-data options support eligible top-ups; the selected plan and checkout confirm current terms and totals.

That gives a short visit a smaller starting allowance without requiring a larger holiday plan. It does not guarantee reception in a crowd or resolve a canceled train. Keep an agreed meeting point and return plan available offline.

Estimate your allowance with the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and follow the installation timing guide before departure. If Birmingham is one stop in a longer market trip, the Manchester market guide has its own dates and transport advice.

Sources and updates

The Frankfurt market organizer publishes its season, hours, programme and visitor facilities. Cathedral Square and Ice Skate Birmingham publish their own schedules. Network Rail's November 5 announcement and Avanti's Christmas travel information explain the New Street closure; TfWM provides local journey tools.

This guide will be updated for material changes to market hours, performances, access or transport. Recheck your travel date and return connections before setting out, particularly on November 8 and December 24.
