Crossing Border 2026: tickets, venues and Hague travel

Crossing Border's main festival evenings take place on Friday, November 6, and Saturday, November 7, 2026, in The Hague. An evening ticket is not an all-programme pass: Saturday's daytime talks have their own tickets, and Sunday's children's programme is at Theater De Vaillant. Choose the session before booking transport.
The wider festival runs November 3-8. Its mix of author conversations and live music suits a city break built around a few performances rather than a long list of sights. This weekend also needs a travel check: NS confirms no trains to, from or via Rotterdam Centraal on November 7-8.
Which Crossing Border ticket should you buy?
| Your plan | Ticket or booking to look for | Main check before paying |
|---|---|---|
| Friday or Saturday evening | Ticket for that festival night | Correct date; allow time for wristband collection |
| Both main evenings | Two-night passepartout | Covers the evenings, not every daytime talk |
| A particular Saturday author conversation | That daytime event's ticket | Author, language, venue and session time |
| Sunday with children | Crossing Border Kids booking | Child's age, session language and De Vaillant location |
The organizer's ticket information lists a regular evening ticket at EUR36 and a two-night passepartout at EUR61. Two separate regular evening tickets total EUR72, so the pass saves EUR11 if you will attend both nights. Check the final checkout total and availability before committing to travel. The July early-bird deadline has passed.
CJP's festival offer lists EUR18 for an evening day ticket and EUR31.50 for a passepartout. Those are conditional discounts, not the general admission price. Bring the qualifying proof required by the seller.
For a daytime booking, open the Saturday programme and choose the actual conversation. R.F. Kuang, Anna Enquist, Nathacha Appanah and Atef Abu Saif appear in that programme. Do not buy an evening pass expecting it to admit you to an afternoon author event.
How to choose an evening without chasing every stage
The Royal Theatre's festival page introduces the literature and music mix, including Jeanette Winterson, Edouard Louis, Dry Cleaning, Zoh Amba and aja monet. It is an overview, not proof that every artist performs on both nights.
Use the official timetables to make your actual plan. The Friday PDF includes conversations and music across several rooms, plus the Red Eyed Fly tent. It tells visitors to enter a room well before a favourite performance; do not treat a festival pass as a reserved seat at each session.
A workable approach is to choose one performance you would be disappointed to miss, then add nearby alternatives. Leave a gap for the next room, a toilet stop or a book signing. A conversation ending at the same moment another set begins is a clash, even if both appear on the same evening pass.
The main evenings start at 18:00. The general festival information runs them to 23:30, while the Friday programme header shows 23:20. Treat this as a late evening and use the current timetable for your final performance, not either end time as a guaranteed train connection.
The main day and evening programmes are 16+. The festival's main language is English, but Dutch authors speak Dutch and some other appearances use interpreters. Check the language on the individual event page, especially if a specific writer is the reason for your trip.
Keep these venues separate in your map
| Venue | Address | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Koninklijke Schouwburg, also called the Royal Theatre | Korte Voorhout 3 | Main evening rooms and the ticket-to-wristband process |
| Red Eyed Fly festival tent | Lange Voorhout 74 | The tent has its own programme; do not stay inside the theatre waiting for a tent performance |
| BorderKitchen | Kerkstraat 13 | Check the venue printed on your daytime booking |
| Theater De Vaillant | Hobbemastraat 120 | Sunday's children's programme, not the Royal Theatre |
Save the address for each booked session, not just a pin labelled Crossing Border. The Saturday daytime timetable separates BorderKitchen, the Royal Theatre and the tent into different columns. That makes it useful for spotting both time clashes and venue changes.
For evening admission, the organizer says single-night tickets are scanned at the Royal Theatre entrance for a wristband. Passepartout holders exchange their ticket at the box office to the left of the main entrance before entering. Build that step into your arrival time rather than arriving at your first performance's start.
Sunday with children: book for age and language
The dedicated Crossing Border Kids page lists Sunday, November 8, at Theater De Vaillant, with a 10:00-16:00 programme. One summary on the broader festival page instead says 11:00; use your booked session and the dedicated timetable to confirm arrival.
The children's timetable labels individual sessions by age and language. Examples include Jarvis's Bear and Bird for ages 4+ in English/Dutch, Joe Todd-Stanton's The Lost Robot for 6+ in English/Dutch, and Jean-Claude Mourlevat's Jefferson for 9+ in French/Dutch. A child who enjoys pictures and drawing may make a different choice from an older reader following a full conversation.
Choose one or two age-appropriate sessions with a break rather than trying to stay for the whole day. Workshops may involve messy materials, so the organizer recommends clothes that can get dirty. Check the exact session's booking conditions, accompanying-adult requirements and availability before taking children to the venue.
For a longer trip, the Netherlands with kids guide covers wider family planning. The main festival's 16+ rule and the separate Kids programme should not be blended into one claim that every session welcomes all ages.
Getting there and returning after the last performance
Start with Den Haag Centraal and your booked venue's address. The organizer describes the Royal Theatre as roughly a ten-minute walk from the station. Allow more time if you need a step-free route, are carrying luggage or want to collect a wristband before a session. De Vaillant needs its own journey plan.
The HTM app supports local journey planning and ticket purchases. HTM also explains that tourists can check in and out using the same supported debit or credit card. Keep the payment method consistent at both ends; a phone wallet and a physical card should not be casually swapped during one journey.
An HTM app ticket is not an NS or RET ticket. HTM says its one-day, children's one-day and three-day app passes activate immediately on purchase, while a two-hour pass is activated before boarding. Do not buy an immediately activated pass several days early. Screenshots are not valid HTM app tickets: open the active ticket in the app.
If your route goes through Rotterdam on Saturday or Sunday, read the November 7-8 Rotterdam rail-work guide. This is a Rotterdam Centraal closure, not proof that all Netherlands trains are cancelled. Search your actual origin and destination for both directions and the correct date.
Before choosing your last performance:
- Check a return journey that leaves enough time to reach the station.
- Check whether replacement transport or an extra change appears.
- Save an earlier departure as a backup.
- If staying overnight, check your Sunday onward route too.
Do not assume a route that worked on Friday will be identical on Saturday. A hotel near your chosen venue can reduce the late-night connection problem, but compare that cost with leaving a little earlier.
Arranging access at the Royal Theatre and festival tent
Het Nationale Theater's ticket guidance asks wheelchair users to contact its box office in good time to reserve the available spaces in the Royal Theatre's main hall. It also lists a hearing-assistance radio system for that hall. These details do not establish the same arrangements in every festival room or temporary tent.
Contact [email protected] with the specific session and venue, plus any step-free, seating, companion or hearing needs. Ask where to arrive and how to move between your booked spaces. A general statement that the theatre is accessible is not a complete route plan for a multi-venue evening.
Keep the timetable and return route available on your phone
Download the official timetable PDFs and save your booking confirmation and venue addresses before leaving reliable Wi-Fi. Follow the seller's ticket-display instructions; a saved screenshot is not automatically a valid replacement for every ticket. Agree on a meeting point with friends if you choose different rooms.
Mobile data helps with changed departures, local maps and messages between performances. For visitors whose home plan does not include Netherlands data, OpenSim Netherlands plans provide a small-allowance option: the current catalog lists 1GB for seven days at USD1.24 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.00. Both listed plans support top-up. The smaller plan can suit a short visit without paying for a large allowance you will not use.
Your home plan may already be sufficient, particularly if Netherlands roaming is included. OpenSim cannot reserve a theatre seat, change a rail timetable or guarantee a signal inside a busy venue. Choose data for the whole trip using the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and read the installation timing guide before buying.
Sources and updates
Crossing Border's festival information supports ticket prices, age rules, language and wristband arrangements. Its separate programme pages and downloadable timetables support day, room and children's-session choices. Het Nationale Theater supports theatre-access booking guidance; HTM supports local app and payment information; NS confirms the Rotterdam Centraal engineering dates.
This guide will change if the organizer revises a session, ticket arrangement, venue or access rule, or if NS changes the weekend travel advice. Follow the live programme and your booking message before setting out.
