A traveler checks mobile connectivity before an international trip

August 10, 2026. Bouygues Telecom and Havas Voyages have expanded InternationalSIM from a small April pilot to 186 participating Havas Voyages and Auchan Voyages agencies in France. A traveler can now discuss the destination, trip length and expected data use with an adviser before buying the travel eSIM.

This is not a new mobile network or a special agency-only eSIM. InternationalSIM launched online in 2025 and still delivers a digital profile by email. The change is the sales and guidance channel: someone who does not want to choose alone on a website can start at a participating travel agency.

The traveler decision: the agency option is useful when face-to-face plan selection and setup guidance matter. It does not make an incompatible or carrier-locked phone work, and the official announcement does not provide a public list of all 186 participating branches. Confirm the agency before visiting and read the final plan and refund terms before paying.

What Bouygues Telecom and Havas Voyages announced

The July 15 announcement says InternationalSIM is now available nationally through 186 participating Havas Voyages and Auchan Voyages agencies after an April 2026 pilot in a smaller group of branches.

The adviser uses a dedicated interface to select an offer based on three practical inputs:

  • The destination or multi-country itinerary
  • The length of the trip
  • The traveler's expected mobile-data use

Bouygues says the service covers more than 200 destinations. That is a catalog claim, not a promise that one package covers all of them. Each plan still has its own country list, allowance, validity, network and feature rules.

InternationalSIM itself is not new. Bouygues launched the service in May 2025 with CG Communications. The website and app remain available to Bouygues customers and noncustomers. The Havas agreement adds a physical buying route rather than replacing the online one.

What buying in a travel agency changes

The strongest part of the rollout is not the QR code. It is the chance to ask a person whether a country plan or regional plan fits the actual route.

A useful agency conversation should settle questions such as:

  1. Does the package cover every overnight stop and border crossing?
  2. Is the allowance enough for maps, messaging, video and hotspot use?
  3. Will the plan start on installation or only after it connects abroad?
  4. Does the selected offer include calls, SMS or a phone number?
  5. What happens if the phone cannot install the profile?

That can help first-time users who are uncomfortable comparing several similar cards on a small screen. It can also help a family avoid buying the same package for phones with different compatibility or lock status.

There are limits. The announcement says an adviser guides the selection and activation, but it does not promise device repair, carrier unlocking or guaranteed coverage at every address. The buyer still receives a digital eSIM and must use a compatible unlocked phone.

Check that the branch participates before you travel

Bouygues repeatedly describes the rollout as 186 participating agencies. It does not say every Havas Voyages or Auchan Voyages branch offers the service, and the announcement does not link to a public participating-agency directory.

Call or message the branch before making a special trip. Ask whether it currently sells InternationalSIM, whether an appointment is needed and whether the adviser can help install the profile on the phone that will travel.

Take the actual phone, not only its model name. An iPhone or Android family can include regional and carrier variants with different eSIM support. The phone also needs a working screen lock, enough battery and internet access for profile download.

If a branch cannot confirm the service, the InternationalSIM website remains a digital route. Roaming eSIM also sells country, regional and Global plans online, so an agency visit is a preference rather than a technical requirement.

CG Communications is the seller named in the online terms

The Bouygues name is prominent, and the agency handles the customer conversation. The current InternationalSIM terms identify CG Communications SAS as the seller for purchases through the InternationalSIM website or app.

That distinction matters when help or a refund is needed. A traveler should ask the agency which company appears on the receipt, which terms apply to an agency sale and whether the agency or CG Communications handles a post-purchase problem. Do not assume that Havas Voyages, Auchan Voyages, Bouygues Telecom and CG Communications all have the same contractual role.

The online terms say the QR code and activation instructions are sent by email after payment. They also say the digital service is considered delivered when those details are sent. Save the order confirmation, receipt, selected package and installation instructions before leaving the agency.

Phone compatibility and carrier lock still decide whether it works

An agency adviser cannot override the phone's hardware or carrier policy. Before payment, verify both:

  • eSIM support: the exact phone model and sales-region variant can download an eSIM.
  • Carrier unlock: the phone is allowed to activate a profile from another provider.

An EID or Add eSIM menu is evidence of eSIM hardware. It is not proof that the phone is unlocked. This distinction has become more important for US travelers under newer device-lock policies.

Use our phone eSIM compatibility guide to check the model, regional variant and lock separately. If the phone is locked, contact the carrier before buying. Roaming eSIM and InternationalSIM cannot remove or bypass that restriction.

When InternationalSIM says the plan starts

Current InternationalSIM destination pages say many plans can be installed before departure and begin their validity when they first use data in a covered destination. The Europe page similarly says its plans activate automatically after the phone reaches a listed country.

That is a plan-level rule, not a universal feature of every travel eSIM. Confirm it on the selected card and order summary. A regional plan may include the country where the traveler is installing it; if so, turning on the line early could create an unexpected connection.

A practical sequence is:

  1. Install on reliable Wi-Fi before departure when the selected rule allows it.
  2. Label the profile with the destination or provider name.
  3. Keep it off for mobile data until it is needed.
  4. At arrival, select the travel eSIM for cellular data.
  5. Turn data roaming on for the travel line if the plan instructions require it.
  6. Disable automatic data switching if it could move data back to the home SIM.

Our eSIM installation timing guide explains why purchase, profile download, activation and validity start can be four different moments.

Calls, SMS, hotspot use and top-ups vary by plan

Do not treat InternationalSIM as one uniform package.

The Europe page currently lists a 15GB data-only plan for 15 days and separate European offers with a French +33 number plus calls and SMS. Current United States and Japan cards are data-only. The site says hotspot use is supported, but tethered devices consume the same allowance.

Top-up language also varies. Several visible product cards say no top-up is available, while some destination FAQ text says users can add data. The selected card and checkout should win over a general FAQ. Ask the adviser to show the exact field before purchase and keep a screenshot.

The same caution applies to plan labels. On August 10, the Japan page showed a card headed CGC - Japan 5GB at USD 12.90, while the detail fields on that card said 10GB for 30 days. A separate Japan FAQ described 5GB and 10GB plans as valid for seven days. Those statements do not align. Verify the allowance and validity in the final order rather than inferring them from the heading.

This kind of inconsistency is exactly where an adviser can help, but the answer should also appear in the written order. If calls or ordinary SMS matter, read our eSIM calls and SMS guide before choosing a data-only plan.

Refunds become difficult after digital delivery and activation

InternationalSIM's online terms say orders are final after payment and exclude the usual withdrawal right for this digital service. CG Communications may consider a refund when the eSIM has not been activated or a verified technical problem prevents use.

The published exclusions include an installed and activated eSIM, partial use, customer device incompatibility and choosing the wrong plan or country. Refund requests must be sent within 14 days of purchase under those terms.

Before paying at an agency:

  • Confirm the phone is compatible and unlocked.
  • Read the destination list, allowance and validity on the final order.
  • Ask who handles an agency-sale refund or technical complaint.
  • Keep proof of the selected package and any adviser recommendation.
  • Contact support before deleting an installed profile.

An in-person purchase reduces selection uncertainty, but it does not automatically create a broader refund right.

InternationalSIM in an agency versus Roaming eSIM online

InternationalSIM has a clear advantage for a traveler in France who wants a face-to-face conversation. The 186-agency rollout creates a buying path that a web-only comparison cannot reproduce.

Roaming eSIM is the stronger fit when the traveler wants to compare and buy online without first locating a participating French branch. Its current destination cards expose allowance, validity, network generation, named supported operators, activation type and whether the selected package can be topped up.

πŸ† Roaming eSIM wins for the checked online plan view: the August 10 Japan catalog showed three consistent 5GB/30-day options, including one at USD 7.90 after the standard checkout fee, with the supported networks listed. InternationalSIM's USD 12.90 Japan card did not present a consistent allowance across its heading and detail fields. This is a dated catalog check, not a claim that every Roaming eSIM plan is always cheaper.

InternationalSIM still wins for someone who values an adviser across the desk more than self-service detail. The better choice depends on the buyer, not the logo.

Ten questions travelers ask about the Bouygues Havas travel eSIM

Do I need to be a Bouygues Telecom customer?

No. Bouygues described InternationalSIM as available to customers and noncustomers at its 2025 launch. A compatible unlocked phone and a suitable plan are still required.

Can I buy InternationalSIM outside France?

The website and app remain digital buying routes for travelers. The new physical channel described in the July announcement is the network of 186 participating Havas Voyages and Auchan Voyages agencies in France.

Does every Havas Voyages agency sell the eSIM?

The announcement says participating agencies and does not publish a complete branch list. Confirm the individual agency before visiting.

Will the adviser install the eSIM for me?

Bouygues says advisers guide customers through choosing and activating the offer. Ask the branch what hands-on help it provides. The traveler remains responsible for using a compatible unlocked phone and following the selected package instructions.

Can the agency make a locked phone accept the eSIM?

No. A carrier lock blocks another provider's profile at device level. Only the carrier or seller responsible for the lock can release it under its policy.

Does InternationalSIM include calls and SMS?

It depends on the plan. Current European offers include both data-only options and options with a French number, calls and SMS. Current Japan and US cards are data-only.

Can I keep my usual phone number active?

Often yes on a dual-SIM phone. Set the travel eSIM as the data line and control roaming on the home line. Calls, messages or carrier travel passes can still create charges on the home subscription.

Can I use the eSIM as a hotspot?

InternationalSIM's current destination guidance says personal hotspot use is supported. The shared devices draw from the same data allowance, so verify that the selected plan is large enough.

When should I install it?

Install before departure only after confirming the exact plan's start rule. Current InternationalSIM pages say many plans begin on first data use in a covered country, but the order summary is the source to keep.

Can I get a refund if it does not work?

The online terms allow limited consideration for an unactivated eSIM or a verified provider-side technical issue. They exclude several customer-side causes and require a request within 14 days. Ask which written terms apply to an agency purchase.

What to do before choosing a plan

The agency rollout is useful because it gives less confident buyers another route into travel eSIMs. The practical gain is advice before departure, not different radio coverage after landing.

Bring the phone, the full itinerary and an honest estimate of data use. Ask the adviser to show the written allowance, validity, destination list, calls and SMS status, hotspot rule, activation trigger, top-up field and refund contact. Leave with the QR code, receipt and instructions saved offline.

If you prefer to compare without an agency visit, start with the international eSIM buying guide. Then compare a Europe Roaming eSIM, United States Roaming eSIM, Japan Roaming eSIM or Global Roaming eSIM against the exact trip.

Sources and updates

The rollout facts were checked against Bouygues Telecom's July 15 partnership announcement and its May 2025 launch release. Product behavior, pricing, calls, SMS, activation and refunds were checked against current InternationalSIM destination pages, FAQs and terms on August 10.

Those pages establish the rollout but do not put branch availability, seller identity, device lock, plan inconsistencies and agency-sale questions into one traveler decision.

Current Roaming eSIM plan details came from the public US and Japan package endpoints at about 10:56 UTC on August 10.
