Brussels Flower Carpet 2026 guide: dates, views and trains

The Brussels Flower Carpet returns from Thursday, August 13 through Sunday, August 16, 2026. The Grand-Place display is free from ground level. A paid City Hall balcony gives the clearest full-carpet view, while the separate EUR 9 tower experience adds a 200-step climb and is unsuitable for some visitors. Every evening, sound-and-light shows run from 21:00 to 23:00 at 30-minute intervals.

This edition has two reasons to plan rather than simply turn up. Hokusai's "The Great Wave off Kanagawa" is being rebuilt in flowers on the Grand-Place, and a second hop-inspired carpet will appear at the Brussels Stock Exchange for the first time. The useful route is short, but the viewing choice, cobbles, crowds and sold-out elevated tickets can change the visit.

This Brussels Flower Carpet 2026 guide was checked on August 6, one week before the event. Recheck the City of Brussels event page and organizer website on the day because ticket availability, entrances and transport notices can change.

What is different in 2026?

The 24th edition returns to the Belgium-Japan relationship. Japanese artist Hiro Sugiyama and his collective Enlightenment have reworked Hokusai's Great Wave for the square, ten years after Japan's 2016 collaboration. The City of Brussels says the design uses more than 500,000 dahlias. The organizer gives a total of more than 700,000 flowers across 1,680 square metres.

The other new element sits several minutes away at Bourse. A second carpet, inspired by hops and Belgium's brewing history, will be installed at the Stock Exchange. This turns the visit into a short two-location route instead of a single photo stop.

Current search results do not handle those changes evenly. Several guides have the right dates but retain old measurements or generic advice from earlier editions. Some news reports explain the design but omit the balcony timetable, tower restrictions, exact light-show schedule and current transport works. One current listing even publishes made-up attendee quotations and unsupported operational claims. This guide uses first-party event, city and transport sources for the practical details.

Free view, balcony or tower: which should you choose?

The most important decision is the viewing height. The Great Wave design reads differently at street level and from above.

Free ground-level view

Choose the free view if you want to see the flowers closely, visit without a timed ticket or include the event in a wider Brussels day. You can walk around the perimeter of the carpet, but you cannot see the whole composition from one low angle.

The free square is still the correct fallback if elevated tickets sell out. In 2024, visitors who missed balcony tickets were still able to see the carpet from ground level. Allow 30 to 45 minutes for a circuit when the square is busy, then walk to the second carpet at Bourse.

City Hall balcony

The balcony is the practical elevated choice for most visitors because it frames the full design without a tower climb. The organizer lists these 2026 hours:

Book through the official route rather than a resale listing. The reviewed organizer page did not state the 2026 balcony price or explain the full step-free route. Anyone who needs a lift, wheelchair access, seating or a companion arrangement should ask the organizer to confirm the exact entrance and route before paying.

View Tower Experience

The tower experience is a separate visit inside City Hall. It includes an installation on the first landing and a 360-degree view after 200 spiral steps. The City of Brussels lists the price as EUR 9.

The city says the climb requires good physical fitness and is not recommended for children under 7, pregnant visitors, or people with vertigo or claustrophobia. This is not the accessible substitute for the balcony. Do not buy it simply because the word "view" appears on both products.

Restaurant viewpoints

Le Roy d'Espagne advertises bookable 2026 packages with views of the carpet and evening show. Treat this as a restaurant reservation, not public balcony access. Confirm the table or tower location, arrival time, stairs, cancellation terms and actual line of sight before booking. A general table reservation on the Grand-Place does not guarantee an upstairs window.

When is the best time to visit?

There is no single best time because the construction, completed carpet and light show are different experiences.

The City of Brussels says the laying can be followed by webcam. That is useful on Thursday if barriers or weather make the live construction difficult to see. The finished carpet remains only through Sunday, so postponing the visit has a hard limit.

For the evening show, do not arrive at 22:55 expecting a single final performance. The published window is 21:00 to 23:00, every 30 minutes. Enter the area early enough to choose a safe exit direction before the next audience arrives.

A simple route for both flower carpets

Start at Grand-Place for the main Great Wave carpet. Walk one full side before deciding whether to stay; the near corner may hide the shape that is obvious from the opposite edge. If you have a balcony slot, use the official entrance time as the fixed point in the itinerary.

Then walk toward Bourse for the hop carpet. The route is short enough to include without transport, but central streets may move slowly when the Grand-Place empties after a light show. Save both pins offline and use a named meeting point at one end of the route.

Do not schedule a distant museum entry ten minutes after the flower visit. A photo stop can take ten minutes on a quiet morning and an hour when security, queues and crowd flow slow the square.

Getting to Grand-Place by train and metro

Driving into the historic core adds parking and restricted-street problems to a short city-centre visit. Train, metro and walking are usually easier.

From Brussels Airport

SNCB lists direct trains between Brussels Airport-Zaventem and Brussels, with the airport station below the departures and arrivals halls. Most airport tickets include the Brussels Airport Supplement; some ticket types require the supplement separately. Keep the barcode available until after the airport gates.

Use the live SNCB journey planner for the selected train and destination. Brussels-Central is the natural rail arrival for Grand-Place, but station works have changed some stairs and nearby pedestrian crossings. Follow the current exit signs instead of an old screenshot.

From elsewhere in Brussels

The organizer recommends metro lines 1 and 5 to De Brouckere, followed by a 600 m walk. It also lists trams 92 and 93 to Royale, 760 m away, and buses 33, 48 and 95 to Grand-Place.

Use the official STIB-MIVB app or Floya for the live route. Floya currently combines STIB-MIVB, SNCB-NMBS, De Lijn and TEC options, but STIB-MIVB has announced that the app will end after 2026. That does not affect this August event; it does mean a future guide should not treat Floya as a permanent recommendation.

From Bruges, Ghent or Antwerp

Use the SNCB journey planner and select Brussels-Central rather than relying on a generic city name. A day trip is realistic, but check the final return before attending a 22:30 light show. Save the train number and platform alerts locally. A late event finish is not proof that a convenient return train still runs.

Accessibility and less-mobile visits

The Grand-Place is historic and paved with cobbles. The reviewed event pages provide transport distances and balcony hours, but they do not publish a complete 2026 route covering drop-off, queue surface, lift access, accessible toilet, balcony position and companion rules.

The tower definitely is not the easier route: it requires 200 spiral steps and the city publishes health restrictions. A recent visitor discussion suggests the balcony can be sufficient for someone who cannot climb the tower, but that comment is not an accessibility guarantee. Contact the organizer for the selected slot and describe the exact need.

Brussels-Central lists lifts, adapted toilets and reduced-mobility assistance. Current construction has altered some station circulation, so book railway assistance where needed and allow more time between the platform and square.

Anyone using a wheelchair, walker or stroller should plan the whole route, not only the viewing point. Cobble vibration, dense standing crowds and temporary barriers can matter more than the map distance.

Bringing children to the Flower Carpet

Children can enjoy the scale and the construction, but the event is still a crowded visual installation rather than a day of children's activities. A short daylight visit works better for many younger children than waiting through a late light show.

Choose the balcony instead of the tower for a child under 7 because the city specifically advises against the tower climb for that age group. Keep a stroller at the edge of the densest flow, and do not assume a cobbled route will be comfortable for a sleeping child.

Before entering, take a current photo of the child's clothing and agree on a staffed meeting point. Add an adult phone number to a wrist card or note. The second Bourse carpet gives the group somewhere specific to walk next instead of circling the same crowd.

Rain, heat and photography

The carpet is outdoors for four days. Check the Royal Meteorological Institute forecast and radar before leaving. A light shower may change comfort more than the event, while heavy rain can make cobbles slippery and umbrellas can block already limited sightlines.

For a phone photo, use daylight or the brighter part of twilight and avoid digital zoom. Street-level shots work best when they include the guildhall facades or a close section of the flower pattern. The balcony is the place for the complete wave. The 2016 photograph on this page shows the construction process, not the 2026 result, so do not use old images to judge this year's colors.

Keep the phone secured when moving through the densest edge. Stop before taking a picture rather than walking backward into another visitor or barrier.

Apps to save before Grand-Place

Install and sign in before the first visit. A one-time login code sent to the usual SIM is harder to solve in a crowded square, especially if roaming on that line is disabled.

Yes. Viewing from ground level on Grand-Place is free. The City Hall balcony, tower and private restaurant viewpoints are separate paid choices.

Yes, if you are already at Grand-Place. The Bourse carpet is new for 2026, uses a hop theme and turns the visit into a short route. It does not require a separate cross-city journey.

Will mobile data work in the crowd?
