Why the 2026 return is unusual

Families who want a daytime focal point can build their visit around the 12:30 parade, but midday heat may be harder for young children than an early street walk followed by a shaded break.
August 10 to 14 for the streets and evening programme
Weekdays give visitors more options for avoiding the two opening-weekend ceremonies. Music begins later in the day, while the decorated streets remain the reason to come. Choose a morning walk if photography and lower temperatures matter more than performances. Choose late afternoon if you want to stay for the stages after dark.
August 12 has an extra planning problem: the total solar eclipse crosses parts of Portugal and Spain near sunset. Campo Maior is outside the totality path published for northern Spain, so do not abandon the festival route or look directly at the Sun expecting a total eclipse. August 15 for the busiest late-night tradition

Start with one edge of the historic centre and move street by street. Trying to cross directly between two distant performances can turn the visit into repeated crowd navigation. A simple route works better:
- Save the car park or drop-off point before walking away from it.
- Choose one entrance and one stage as fixed reference points.
- Mark streets in the official app instead of relying on memory.
- Pause at a rest zone before the hottest part of the day.
- Return to the chosen exit before the final performance if a fast departure matters.
Paper flowers are vulnerable to rain, wind and contact. The 2026 themes were kept private while residents worked, so older photos cannot show which streets will be most elaborate this year. Visit without treating doorways, decorations or residents' work areas as a photo set.
Parking and road access
Driving is the most flexible way to reach Campo Maior, but it is not a reason to aim for the historic centre. DECO's current visitor guide says official parking areas will be free and signposted on arrival. The festival app is the better source for the current car park and gate layout.
Expect to walk. A published coach trip warns that road restrictions may force buses to stop or park far from the event. The same can apply to private drop-offs when access controls change. Comfortable shoes matter on the cobbled streets, and passengers with limited mobility should confirm the closest suitable drop-off with the organizer rather than assuming every parking area has the same route.
Save four details offline: the car park name, its entrance, the walking route back and the location of the ticket gate you used. A dropped map pin is safer than a photo of a generic parking sign, particularly after dark.
Getting to Campo Maior without a car
From Lisbon
Campo Maior does not have a passenger railway station. CP serves Elvas on the eastern rail line, but the final journey to Campo Maior is by road. Check the live CP timetable for your date, then arrange the taxi, bus or accommodation transfer before boarding the train. A rail ticket to Elvas is not a through ticket to the festival.
Do not build a same-day Lisbon return around an unverified connection after a late concert. The programme can continue until 02:00, while train and local road services follow their own schedules. Stay in the region or leave the festival early enough for a confirmed transfer.
From Elvas
Elvas is the most practical Portuguese base outside Campo Maior. It has rail access and appears in the organizer's accommodation list. The final transfer still needs checking. Ask the accommodation whether it runs an event transfer, prebook a taxi or confirm the exact local bus on the travel date.
From Badajoz and Spain
The organizer recommends Badajoz as another accommodation base. It is across the Spanish border, so confirm that a rental agreement permits the crossing and check the route before departure. Do not count on finding an on-demand ride back across the border after a late programme.

Choose the base by transport, not just room price. A cheaper room without a confirmed late return can become unusable on a night when the programme runs past midnight. Before booking, ask about parking, the last check-in time and whether the property knows of any festival transfer.
Avoid changing hotels just to visit on two different days. The nine-day pass is inexpensive, but repeated check-ins and uncertain transfers can consume more time than a second walk through the streets is worth.
Heat, children and accessibility
Campo Maior is in the Alto Alentejo, and August afternoons can be hot. Check IPMA on the morning of the visit. Carry water, sun protection and any required medication, then plan the exposed walk for earlier or later in the day. The paper canopy creates patches of shade, but it does not turn a crowded street into an air-conditioned space.
Children through age 10 have free entry with a ticket-holding adult. That makes the festival financially accessible to families, but suitability still depends on heat, walking tolerance and the chosen programme. Agree on a fixed reunion point if a group separates. "By the flowers" does not identify one place in a town with more than 100 decorated streets. Pick a gate, stage or named public building visible in the official app.
