City2Surf 2026 takes place on Sunday, August 9. The sold-out field of 90,000 runners and walkers covers 14km from Hyde Park to Bondi Beach. Registered participants should settle four details before race morning: the bib, the Expo bag drop, the correct start zone and the route away from Bondi.
There is no race-day bib collection and no bag drop at the start. If your bib was not posted, collect it at Hordern Pavilion by 4:30pm on Saturday or arrange for another person to collect it with your registration confirmation. Travel on public transport is included for participants and volunteers who show a bib or pass. Supporters still need their usual fare.
This guide was checked on August 5, 2026. The organizer has released the start times, new 2026 app, baggage process and event schedule. Transport for NSW has published colour-specific station advice, special services, shuttles and road closures. Recheck both official pages on Saturday evening and again before leaving on Sunday.

Resolve the bib before flying to Sydney
City2Surf says the 2026 event is sold out. Entries are registered to the named athlete, cannot be transferred and do not have an official resale route. Do not pay a stranger for a bib or run under somebody else's identity. The name and emergency details matter if medical staff need to identify a participant.
If the bib was not posted, it must be collected at the City2Surf Expo at Hordern Pavilion in Moore Park:
| Day | Bib collection and Expo hours |
|---|---|
| Thursday, August 6 | 12pm to 7pm |
| Friday, August 7 | 8am to 6:30pm |
| Saturday, August 8 | 7:30am to 4:30pm |
Bring the collection QR code or registration confirmation named in the organizer's instructions. If you cannot attend, the current FAQ allows another person to collect the bib with a copy of your registration confirmation. That is a collection arrangement, not a transfer of the entry.
The timing matters for international visitors. Sydney Airport says its train reaches the city in about 13 minutes, but a Saturday evening arrival is already too late for a 4:30pm Expo close. Contact the organizer and arrange collection before departure. Do not expect the airport train, taxi or a persuasive explanation to create a Sunday pickup desk that the event does not advertise.
Saturday is also busy at Moore Park. City2Surf warns that more than 40,000 AFL spectators are due at the nearby SCG from the afternoon. The organizer recommends collecting before 2pm to avoid the heaviest traffic and transport demand.
Drop the finish bag at the Expo
The 2026 baggage process uses a clear recycled waterproof bag measuring 400mm by 550mm. The organizer supplies the bag and requires the race-number gear tag. Personal backpacks, purses and handbags are not accepted as race baggage.
Bag drop is at the Expo during the same Thursday, Friday and Saturday hours. There is no bag drop at Hyde Park on Sunday. Unattended belongings at the start may be removed, so leaving a backpack behind a tree is not a workaround.
Put only the finish items you can afford to entrust to the service in the supplied bag: a dry layer, change of clothes, water and a snack. Keep the phone, keys, wallet and travel documents with you or secured elsewhere. City2Surf says valuables should not go into the baggage service.
Collect the bag from the Bondi Event Village by 2pm. Uncollected gear is donated. If a flight or train leaves soon after the run, allow for the collection queue and the slow exit from Bondi rather than planning around the finish-line time alone.
Match the station to the start colour
The start is not one doorway. Colour zones spread around Hyde Park, and the best station depends on the bib. Transport for NSW gives this current guidance:
| Start colour | Useful arrival stations and stops |
|---|---|
| Red, Pink and Charity | Town Hall, St James or Museum; Gadigal metro via Park Street; QVB or Town Hall by light rail or bus |
| Green and Blue | Town Hall or St James; Martin Place metro; Town Hall light rail; Elizabeth Street buses |
| Purple and Yellow | Town Hall or Museum; Gadigal metro via Bathurst Street; QVB or Town Hall by light rail or bus |
| Orange before 8:30am | Martin Place train or metro; Wynyard light rail; Martin Place or Wynyard buses |
| Orange after 8:30am | Town Hall or St James; Martin Place metro; Town Hall light rail; Elizabeth Street buses |
Open the current start map rather than choosing the station with the shortest straight-line distance. Barriers and colour entrances can turn a short walk into a long loop. Arrive at least 30 minutes before the published wave time.
2026 start times
| Group | Start time | Start area |
|---|---|---|
| Elite, Preferred and Red | 7:35am | Park Street |
| Green | 7:40am | College Street North |
| Purple | 7:54am | College Street South |
| Charity Superstar | 8:19am | Park Street |
| Blue | 8:22am | College Street North |
| Yellow | 9:00am | College Street South |
| Orange | 9:27am | College Street North |
A runner may move to a later group without changing the bib. Moving to an earlier group is not allowed and can lead to disqualification. Friends who received different colours can start together only in the later eligible group.
Participants and volunteers can use the included public transport by showing the race bib or volunteer pass. Transport for NSW says extra trains, buses, metro, light rail and ferries will run. Supporters and family members who are not registered should use an Opal card or accepted contactless payment as normal.
Do not drive toward the course
Roads around Hyde Park begin closing at 3:30am. Major course roads close from 6am, with more restrictions through the eastern suburbs and Bondi from 7am. Roads reopen progressively from 11:30am, and the final Bondi and Bondi Junction restrictions are due to lift by 4pm.
Special event clearways begin at 1am. A parked vehicle can be towed even if the street looked legal on Saturday evening. Check Live Traffic NSW and the signs on the exact block. A generic navigation route may continue to suggest a road after event controls have changed.
Buses around the CBD and eastern suburbs use altered routes and stops. Transport for NSW has already published changes for services including 333 and 461X. Use the live trip planner on Sunday rather than a saved normal timetable.
For airport arrivals, the train is usually the cleanest route into the CBD. Sydney Airport lists stations at both the international and domestic terminals, contactless payment and services about every ten minutes. The airport station access fee is added to the normal train fare, so race-day included travel does not make the airport leg free before a participant has the required bib.
What the 14km course feels like
City2Surf is net downhill from the city to the sea, but it is not a flat 14km. William Street descends early, the route undulates through the eastern suburbs, and Heartbreak Hill is a long climb from Rose Bay toward Vaucluse. More rolling road follows before the descent to Bondi.
First-timer discussions often focus on Heartbreak Hill and underestimate what comes after it. Four-time winner Steve Moneghetti made the same practical point in a Sydney Travel Guide interview: runners need enough control for the downhill and later sections, not only the named climb.
Run to the training and conditions you actually have. Walking part of a hill is safer than forcing a pace that leaves you unwell. Write the emergency contact details on the back of the bib. City2Surf lists first-aid teams at the start, finish, drink stations and along the course. If symptoms are more serious than normal effort, stop and ask a marshal or medical team for help.
Check the BOM Weather app on Saturday night and race morning. It provides hourly forecasts, rain radar and warnings. Pack for the issued forecast, not a historic August average. A dry layer in the Expo bag is useful even when the morning starts clear.
A practical spectator plan
Supporters should choose one viewing area and one finish meeting point before the race. Trying to follow a runner by car is not realistic when roads close ahead of the field.
The City2Surf 2026 app can track participants and show results. Tracking is useful for estimating progress, but it is not a promise of second-by-second location. A phone can stop updating, a runner can change pace and the network can slow in a dense crowd.
For a family group:
- Pick a public, fixed meeting point outside the finish chute and recovery flow.
- Put the place name and a screenshot on every phone.
- Agree on a waiting time before anybody changes location.
- Give children a paper contact number and accommodation address.
- Save the finish map offline and mark the point in a map app.
A fresh Sydney discussion about the 2026 finish includes several reports of slow mobile data at Bondi during City2Surf. That is not a measured network study, but the 90,000-person field makes an offline reunion plan sensible. GPS can still locate the phone without mobile data when the map area has already been downloaded.
Children aged 12 and under must remain with a registered adult throughout the event. Walkers, participants with prams, everyday wheelchairs and service dogs use the Orange group. A child who is old enough to run independently still needs the family meeting plan.
Leave Bondi with the crowd in mind
The finish is not beside a railway station. Frequent event shuttles run from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction, where runners can connect to trains and other buses. Queues are part of the plan when thousands finish within a similar window.
Transport for NSW gives a second option: walk 2.7km to Bondi Junction, which it estimates at about 35 minutes. That can be useful for able walkers who would rather move than wait, but it comes after a hilly 14km. Make the decision based on how the runner feels after finishing, not before the start.
Do not book a tight airport departure around the expected race time. Add recovery, baggage collection, the finish-area walk, shuttle demand, the transfer at Bondi Junction and the airport station journey. Roads around Bondi are due to remain restricted until 4pm.
The accessibility page lists a pickup point on Warners Avenue, about 650 metres from the finish, operating from 8am to 4pm. It is a pickup zone inside a clearway, not parking. Accessible shuttle users should tell staff while joining the queue because not every bus is accessible.
The same page lists a quiet space in Bondi Pavilion Music Studios 1 and 2 with water, seating, tables, charging and fidget items. It is unstaffed. Check the current access map and contact the organizer before race day if a wheelchair, sensory space or assisted pickup is essential.
Install the useful apps before Saturday
Use each app for one job:
| App or tool | Race-week use | Offline backup |
|---|---|---|
| City2Surf 2026 app | Event details, tracking and results | Bib confirmation, start map and finish map |
| Opal Travel or Transport for NSW | Colour-zone route, service changes and Bondi exit | Station names and the 2.7km walking route |
| Live Traffic NSW | Road closures and clearways | Do not depend on a saved driving route |
| BOM Weather | Hourly forecast, radar and warnings | Clothing plan and a dry finish layer |
| Offline map | Hyde Park, course area, Bondi and accommodation | Marked meeting point and hotel address |
City2Surf says its 2026 app is new and earlier versions will not receive current updates. Install the current listing from the organizer's page rather than opening last year's icon and assuming it refreshed.
Keep the phone in a secure running belt or close-fitting pocket. The Expo baggage instructions say not to leave valuables in the finish bag. If carrying a power bank on the flight to Sydney, read the current airline battery rules and keep it in carry-on baggage. A large battery is rarely comfortable or necessary during the 14km itself.
Mobile data for City2Surf and the wider Sydney trip
Mobile data helps with the event app, airport train, Opal journey planning, maps, weather, family messages and the route home. It cannot transfer a race entry, open a closed road or guarantee capacity around 90,000 participants.
The public Roaming eSIM package endpoint was checked on August 5, 2026. It returned 34 Australia plans. Current fixed-data examples included 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.40, 5GB for 30 days at USD 5.40 and 10GB for 30 days at USD 9.40. Those examples listed Optus and Vodafone, 3G/4G/5G and top-up support. Prices, network partners, speed, activation and reloadability vary by package, so check the selected card before payment.
A race news story can explain the closures and crowds. Roaming eSIM helps with the part that continues after the article: a traveler with a compatible unlocked phone can arrange an Australia plan before reaching the airport, manage it in the Roaming eSIM app, and use the published 24/7 and WhatsApp support channels when help is needed. The same plan can cover maps and travel apps for the rest of the Australia trip, not only race morning.
That advantage has limits. A Roaming eSIM connects through the local partners shown on the selected package. It does not add radio capacity at Bondi, and changing plans is not a substitute for downloading the map and fixing a meeting point.
Start with the Australia Roaming eSIM page for an Australia-only trip. Use the cards below to compare regional coverage when Sydney is one stop in a wider itinerary. Read every country list rather than assuming a regional label includes the next destination.
Estimate the full trip with the travel data calculator. Check phone compatibility, then read the installation timing guide before scanning anything. Some plans begin when installed and others begin after the first covered network connection.
Travelers continuing to Brisbane during the same week can use the Ekka 2026 guide for the separate ticket, Exhibition Station and Fun Pass decisions. City2Surf road closures and Bondi shuttles do not apply there.
Ten City2Surf 2026 questions runners are asking
Can somebody else collect my City2Surf bib?
Yes. If you cannot attend the Expo, the current FAQ says another person can collect it with a copy of your registration confirmation. The entry remains in your name and cannot be transferred.
Can I collect my bib on Sunday morning?
Do not plan on it. The published collection window ends at 4:30pm on Saturday, August 8. City2Surf does not advertise race-day collection at Hyde Park.
Is there a bag drop at the start?
No. Drop the supplied clear bag at the Expo before race day. Collect it from the Bondi Event Village by 2pm and keep valuables out of it.
Can I start in a different wave?
You may move to a later wave. You cannot move to an earlier wave, and attempting it can lead to disqualification. Friends with different colours should use the later eligible group.
Is public transport free for City2Surf?
Travel is included for registered participants and volunteers who show their bib or pass. Supporters who do not have an eligible bib or pass need their normal fare.
Which station should I use for the start?
It depends on the bib colour. Transport for NSW lists Town Hall, St James, Museum, Martin Place and Gadigal in different combinations. Use the colour-specific start map instead of one generic Hyde Park destination.
How do I get from Bondi Beach to Bondi Junction?
Use the event shuttle or walk the published 2.7km route, estimated at 35 minutes. Decide after the finish because the walk follows a hilly race and shuttle demand changes through the morning.
Where should families meet after the finish?
Choose a fixed public place outside the finish chute and recovery flow. Mark it on an offline map and put the name on paper for children. Do not rely only on calls or live location in the Bondi crowd.
Can children and prams join City2Surf?
Children 12 and under must stay with a registered adult for the full event. Participants with prams, walkers, service dogs and everyday wheelchairs use the Orange group under the current rules.
Will a Roaming eSIM work at Bondi after the race?
It can connect through the partner networks listed for the selected Australia package where coverage and network capacity are available. Large crowds can slow any local network. Save maps, tickets and the meeting point offline.
The Saturday-night check
Before sleeping:
- Confirm the bib, colour, start time and entrance map.
- Make sure any finish bag is already at the Expo.
- Save the start and finish maps on every phone.
- Check Transport for NSW, Live Traffic and the BOM forecast.
- Mark the Bondi meeting point and the route to Bondi Junction.
- Write the emergency contact on the bib.
- Charge the phone and secure it in the race-day pocket or belt.
- Test the Roaming eSIM only according to the package's activation rule.
The event is straightforward once those handoffs are settled. Get the bib and bag out of the way before Sunday, arrive through the entrance for the correct colour, and treat the Bondi exit as part of the 14km day rather than an afterthought.
