Catania airport and Mount Etna: flights, diversions and what to do

Catania Airport had suspended flight operations until 16:00 local time on Thursday, August 13 when this guide was checked at 17:55 local time on August 12. DW reported the extension after volcanic ash continued to affect eastern Sicily. Comiso had resumed operations after a temporary suspension, but airport capacity and airline schedules were still under pressure.

That status can change within hours. Use the Catania Airport website, its free flight-tracking email service, and the operating airline for your exact flight before leaving for the airport.

The short answer: do not travel to Catania Airport solely because the original departure time still appears in an old email. Check the operating airline's live status. If the flight is cancelled or diverted, ask the airline for its rerouting plan before buying a separate ticket or a long taxi ride. Save every message and receipt.

Catania airport status and Sicily alternatives

The disruption has lasted for several days, so a single closure count does not describe every passenger's trip. Anadolu reported around 700 cancellations by August 12. El Pais reported that about 190 flights had been diverted to Palermo and that ground transport was crowded. Those figures cover a moving disruption, not a final official total.

An airport accepting diverted flights can still be busy, delayed or unsuitable for your route. Palermo is not guaranteed to remain unaffected just because it is farther from Etna. Check the exact flight rather than moving a booking based on the airport name alone.

The first ten minutes after a cancellation or diversion

1. Open the airline app and website, then find the operating flight number.
2. Save the cancellation, diversion or delay notice as a screenshot.
3. Ask whether the airline is rerouting the full itinerary or only the disrupted sector.
4. Confirm the arrival airport, date and local time in writing.
5. Ask whether ground transport to the original destination is included.
6. If you are waiting, ask the airline what meals, hotel and transfers it is arranging.
7. Keep the original ticket, baggage receipts and every reasonable expense receipt.
8. Tell accommodation and rental-car providers before the pickup or check-in deadline.
9. Download the replacement route and tickets for offline use.
10. Do not cancel the original booking or buy a new one until you understand what that choice does to the airline's offer.

The airline's airport desk may be overloaded. Use the app, website, phone and chat in parallel, but do not accept conflicting changes on several channels. Keep the latest confirmed itinerary visible offline.

Arriving, departing and connecting need different plans

If the airline diverts your flight and provides a transfer, follow its meeting point and baggage instructions. Leaving independently can make it harder to reunite with a checked bag or prove which extra cost was necessary.

Palermo to Catania is not a simple train fallback

Palermo and Catania sit on opposite sides of Sicily. A map can make the rail option look straightforward, but current works change the journey.

Trenitalia's June 14 notice says some Palermo Centrale to Catania Centrale regional trains are cancelled over part of the route and replaced by buses. Trenitalia warns that replacement-bus times can vary with road traffic. Check the exact travel date and service in the Trenitalia journey planner before relying on a connection.

During the July Etna closure, the Sicily regional government arranged emergency buses and special trains between diverted airports and Catania. That July notice is useful evidence that emergency transport can be organized, but it is not a timetable for August. Ask the airline, airport or regional authority whether a new service is operating today.

If you land at Palermo

Stay with the airline's diversion process until you know whether a transfer is included. If you must arrange the trip yourself, compare the next confirmed bus, the current rail itinerary and a one-way rental car. Do not assume a late arrival has a same-night public transport connection.

If you land at Comiso

Comiso is better placed for Ragusa, Modica and parts of southeast Sicily than for Palermo. For Catania, Taormina or Etna accommodation, check the airline transfer first, then compare a confirmed bus or car route. Smaller-airport vehicle supply can disappear quickly during a diversion wave.

If you land at Trapani

Trapani can keep a flight on the island, but it creates the longest ground transfer of the three common Sicily alternatives. A rushed taxi decision can be expensive. Ask whether the airline can reroute by air or provide organized transport before committing to an overnight road journey.

Refund, rerouting, care and compensation are different rights

When EU passenger-rights rules apply, a cancellation normally gives the passenger a choice between reimbursement and rerouting. Rerouting may be at the earliest opportunity or at a later date under comparable conditions, subject to the rules and seat availability. Choosing a refund usually ends the airline's obligation to carry you on that cancelled booking, so read the offer before accepting it.

Care is a separate issue. EU passenger-rights guidance explains that meals, refreshments, hotel accommodation and transport between the airport and accommodation can be due while a traveler waits for rerouting. If the airline cannot arrange them, keep itemized receipts for reasonable costs.

Cash compensation is another separate test. Volcanic ash can qualify as an extraordinary circumstance outside an airline's control. That can remove the fixed compensation payment when the airline proves the required conditions, but it does not automatically remove the choice between refund and rerouting or the duty of care.

Do not rely on a social post that says every volcanic cancellation pays cash, or that the airline owes nothing. The route, operating carrier, ticket, notice and airline response all matter.

Before buying your own replacement flight

A self-booked escape can be sensible when the airline has no workable option, but it can also leave you with two expensive tickets and a disputed reimbursement claim.

Ask these questions first:

• Has the airline cancelled the flight, or is it only delayed?
• What rerouting has the airline offered?
• Can it move you to Palermo, Comiso, Trapani, Naples or Rome on the same ticket?
• Will it accept a train or bus as part of the rerouting?
• If you reject the offer, are you choosing a refund instead?
• Does travel insurance require the carrier to decline assistance before you book independently?

If you buy another ticket, save the airline's failed or impractical offer, the new fare, the reason it was necessary and all transport receipts. A cheaper route that arrives later may be easier to defend than a premium replacement chosen without contacting the airline.

Car rental, hotel and tour bookings

A diversion does not automatically move a rental-car reservation. Call the provider before the pickup deadline and ask whether the booking can move from Catania to Palermo, Comiso or Trapani. Get any one-way fee, vehicle class change and new pickup time in writing.

Do not create a new rental booking until you know whether the original will be refunded or marked as a no-show. During a large disruption, cars can appear available online and disappear before the desk confirms them.

Tell the hotel about a late arrival. Ask it to hold the room and record the message. For prepaid tours, explain the airline disruption before the cancellation deadline and ask whether the booking can move. Airline passenger rights do not automatically cover every separate hotel, car or tour loss, which is where travel insurance terms can become important.

Should you cancel the whole Sicily trip?

An ash-related airport suspension is not the same as an order to leave Sicily. The effect depends on the ash plume, wind, airport inspection and your itinerary. A flight can be disrupted while towns elsewhere on the island operate normally.

For aviation updates, the airport and airline are the practical sources. For volcanic activity, use the INGV latest updates. INGV also explains that it issues Volcano Observatory Notice for Aviation updates when Etna creates an aviation hazard.

Do not drive toward an eruption, cross a closure or use social photos as a safety map. Follow Civil Protection, police and local authority instructions. If your trip depends on one short, nonrefundable flight window, postponing may be rational. A flexible trip that can enter through Palermo and spend time in western Sicily presents a different decision.

Phone, data and offline preparation

Save these before leaving Wi-Fi:

• the airline app, booking and contact channel;
• the Catania Airport flight page and tracking email;
• replacement boarding passes and ground tickets;
• accommodation and rental-car contacts;
• the airline's written rerouting offer;
• an offline Sicily map with Palermo, Catania, Comiso and Trapani marked; and

No blanket conclusion follows from an airport closure. Follow INGV and Civil Protection instructions for the specific area, and follow the airport and airline for aviation status. Never enter a restricted zone to get closer to the eruption.
