Rail disruption also changes on August 16 around Rome and Colleferro. Do not reuse an August 15 journey result without running the search again for the correct date.

Are museums open on Ferragosto 2026?

Many state museums, archaeological parks, castles, abbeys, monumental complexes, villas and gardens will open. The Ministry of Culture's Ferragosto 2026 page maintains the live list.

Three details matter:

1. August 15 is not a nationwide free-admission day.
2. Each site keeps its own opening time, admission method and reservation rule.
3. The Ministry warns that last-minute changes are possible and recommends checking the official venue or Musei Italiani app.

The national announcement covers state cultural sites on its list. It does not automatically cover every municipal museum, private collection, church, palace or Vatican site. Search for the exact attraction, then follow its official ticket route. If the site requires a timed entry on an ordinary day, Ferragosto does not remove that requirement.

Keep the ticket as a PDF or screenshot and save the venue address. If the booking uses a QR code inside the Musei Italiani service, open it once before leaving reliable WiFi.

Do trains run on Ferragosto?

Yes, trains run on Ferragosto, but "trains run" is not enough to validate a journey. Holiday demand, maintenance and route-specific replacement buses can change the useful answer.

A current Rome and Caserta disruption overlaps August 15

Trenitalia's current engineering notice says rail traffic is interrupted from Rome to Caserta from August 6 through August 15 on the affected corridor. Regional trains on the Rome, Cassino and Caserta or Boiano line are cancelled. Other listed regional and Intercity services have changes, limitations or cancellations, with replacement buses on specified sections.

This notice does not say that every Rome-to-Naples train is cancelled. High-speed and other services can use different routes. Check the exact train number shown on your ticket and read any operator message attached to it. If the itinerary changes from rail to bus, inspect the replacement stop because several buses leave from locations outside the station entrance.

On August 16, the notice changes to an interruption between Rome and Colleferro for the affected regional routes. It also lists a wider suspension on the Rome Termini to Frascati, Albano and Velletri lines from August 6 to 23. Travelers using Ciampino-area connections or Castelli Romani day trips should check the current route rather than depending on the normal rail map.

How to check a train properly

For Trenitalia, search the journey again for the travel date and inspect the service notice for the train number. The company also publishes a downloadable summer timetable, valid from June 14 to December 12, 2026, but live disruption notices take priority over a static timetable.

For Italo, use its current timetable and Italo in Viaggio for real-time departure information. A statement about Trenitalia engineering work should not be copied blindly onto an Italo booking. Check the operator that issued the ticket.

Allow more transfer time if a replacement bus appears. Large luggage, wheelchairs, pushchairs and bicycles can be harder to handle during an unplanned mode change. Contact the operator before travel if assistance is required.

Local transport and airport transfers

City transport often uses a Sunday or public-holiday timetable on August 15. The correct source is the local operator for that city, not a national Ferragosto article. Search the journey with the date selected and take a screenshot that includes the route number and boarding stop.

For Rome Ciampino Airport, Aeroporti di Roma lists several direct coach companies plus local links to Ciampino station, Anagnina, Laurentina, Cinecitta and Subaugusta. These services do not share one timetable. Verify the company shown on the ticket and avoid building the airport trip around an unconfirmed connection at Ciampino station while the rail works are active.

For Fiumicino Airport, the airport operator's rail page lists the Leonardo Express and FL1. It states that FL1 normally runs less frequently on weekends and holidays. Run a fresh August 15 search in Trenitalia and leave enough time for the airline deadline.

Elsewhere in Italy, follow the same method:

1. Check the airport's official ground-transport page.
2. Open the named train, bus or ferry operator.
3. Select August 15, not "today."
4. Save the booked service and one route that does not depend on the same connection.

A taxi or prebooked transfer can be a fallback, but confirm the pickup and holiday availability directly. Do not accept an unsolicited ride from someone approaching inside an airport.

Will supermarkets, restaurants and cafes be open?

For ferries, reserve the actual sailing when the crossing is essential. A route operating on Ferragosto does not guarantee room for a car or a walk-up passenger.
