Cathay Pacific is due to make Hong Kong-Madrid a daily route on October 25, 2026. Three new weekly round trips join the existing four, while new Cathay-marketed, Iberia-operated connections extend the Madrid journey to Fortaleza, Recife, Buenos Aires and Santo Domingo.

The daily headline makes date choice easier, but the two timetable patterns are not interchangeable. The operating airline also changes in Madrid on the Latin America connections. Check the local date, flight number and "operated by" line before paying.

The practical answer: use the daily service to choose the connection that leaves the safest margin in Madrid, not simply the cheapest departure. Cathay operates the Hong Kong-Madrid sector. Iberia operates the newly announced onward codeshare sectors. Keep both flights on one ticket when possible, then confirm at check-in that bags are tagged to the final airport.

This guide was checked on October 18, 2026, one week before the planned daily schedule begins.

The daily Hong Kong-Madrid schedule

Cathay's July 16 announcement lists four flight numbers. All times are local and remain subject to change and regulatory approval.

FlightRouteDepartureArrivalOperating days from October 25
CX297Hong Kong (HKG) to Madrid (MAD)12:4020:30Monday, Thursday, Saturday
CX315Hong Kong (HKG) to Madrid (MAD)00:4008:30Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday
CX298Madrid (MAD) to Hong Kong (HKG)22:3018:15 next dayMonday, Thursday, Saturday
CX372Madrid (MAD) to Hong Kong (HKG)11:2506:50 next dayTuesday, Wednesday, Friday, Sunday

The three added round trips are CX297 and CX298 on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. Cathay's current Madrid offer page shows the same schedule for October 25, 2026 through March 27, 2027. Search the exact date because the airline can revise times or operating days.

The two eastbound departures from Madrid are especially different. CX372 leaves late morning, while CX298 leaves late evening. An onward flight that looks comfortable against one pattern may not work against the other.

What the Iberia codeshare adds

Cathay says the new codeshares add four destinations through Madrid:

  • Fortaleza (FOR) and Recife (REC) in Brazil.
  • Buenos Aires (EZE) in Argentina.
  • Santo Domingo (SDQ) in the Dominican Republic.

These are not new Cathay-operated nonstops from Hong Kong. Cathay operates HKG-MAD; Iberia operates the named Madrid-Latin America sectors. A ticket may show a Cathay flight number on an Iberia aircraft, so the operating-carrier line matters for the terminal process, check-in, seat selection, baggage handling and disruption support.

Argentina and the Dominican Republic enter Cathay's codeshare network for the first time under this expansion. That is a network claim, not a guarantee that every date, fare or cabin is available as one bookable itinerary. Search the complete origin and destination for the intended day and compare what is actually offered.

Build the Madrid connection around the real itinerary

Madrid-Barajas has T4 and the T4 Satellite building, linked by an automated people mover. Aena's official connection guide says the time required depends on the route, airline, terminal and whether baggage is checked through. It also notes that passport, security or terminal-transfer steps can apply.

Do not use one universal minimum connection time from a forum post. Before booking, check the connection that the airline actually sells, the arrival and departure terminals shown for that date, and whether the itinerary is protected as one journey. A legal airline connection can still feel rushed after a late arrival or a long walk.

Separate tickets remove much of that protection. If a traveler must enter Spain, collect a bag and check it again, the usable connection ends at Iberia's bag-drop cutoff rather than the onward departure time. A delay on the first ticket does not automatically oblige the second airline to rebook the passenger.

Bags and boarding passes on a partner itinerary

Cathay's conditions of carriage say it will check bags through when it has a specific arrangement with the other carrier. If no arrangement applies, or through-checking is not possible for operational reasons, the passenger must collect, clear and recheck the bag.

That makes the check-in desk answer more useful than a general assumption about oneworld membership. Ask where the tag ends and verify the three-letter airport code printed on the receipt. Keep medicine, documents, chargers and a change of essential clothing in permitted cabin baggage.

A boarding pass for the first sector does not prove the onward pass has been issued. Save the itinerary and booking reference offline, use the operating airline's app for its sector, and find the transfer desk if the next pass is missing. At Hong Kong, the airport's transfer guide directs passengers without an onward boarding pass to the relevant transfer desk before security.

Which itinerary is the better fit?

Choose the through itinerary when it gives a sensible Madrid buffer and the fare conditions suit the trip. It is usually the cleaner option for baggage and missed-connection handling. Still compare both daily timetable patterns because the later Madrid departure or earlier arrival can produce a much safer transfer.

Consider stopping in Madrid when the through connection is tight, when an overnight would lower the fare enough to justify a hotel, or when Spain is part of the trip. Confirm entry permission before building a landside stop. A connection sold as airside does not prove the passenger can enter Spain.

If the Latin America sector is booked separately, treat the Madrid stop as a new departure. Leave time for immigration where required, bag collection, terminal movement, check-in, security and the operating airline's cutoff. Travel insurance terms should be checked before relying on separate-ticket protection.

Mobile data for Hong Kong, Spain and Latin America

OpenSim has current plans for Hong Kong, Spain, South America and the Dominican Republic. A regional plan can be convenient for a Brazil-Argentina itinerary, but coverage must be checked against every country on the selected product card.

The eSIM can provide ground data for airline alerts, maps and accommodation messages. It does not provide inflight Wi-Fi, change a booking, transfer baggage or supply immigration permission. Allowance, validity, network, hotspot support, activation and top-up eligibility vary by package. Not every plan is reloadable.

Install while reliable Wi-Fi is available, keep the QR code or manual details offline, and activate according to the selected plan's instructions. Check whether the phone supports eSIM before purchase.

Ten questions about Cathay's daily Madrid service

When does Cathay Pacific start daily Hong Kong-Madrid flights?

The planned daily schedule starts October 25, 2026. The airline's current offer page displays it through March 27, 2027. Confirm the selected date before booking.

Which flights are newly added?

CX297 from Hong Kong and CX298 from Madrid are added on Monday, Thursday and Saturday. The existing CX315 and CX372 pattern covers Tuesday, Wednesday, Friday and Sunday.

Is every Hong Kong-Madrid flight at the same time?

No. There are two timetable patterns. The Monday, Thursday and Saturday flights depart at different times from those on the other four days.

Does Cathay fly from Madrid to Latin America?

Not on the newly announced sectors. Cathay markets codeshare connections, but Iberia operates the Madrid flights to Fortaleza, Recife, Buenos Aires and Santo Domingo.

Can I book Hong Kong to Buenos Aires on one ticket?

The codeshare is intended to support that connection, but inventory and fares can vary by date. Search the complete journey and verify that every sector appears on the same ticket before payment.

Will my bag transfer in Madrid?

It may on an eligible through itinerary. Ask at the origin and check that the baggage receipt shows the final airport. If the bag is not checked through, allow time to collect and recheck it.

Is 70 minutes enough to connect at Madrid?

There is no universal answer. Terminal location, passport control, security, boarding-pass status and checked baggage all matter. Use the airline's offered itinerary, then judge whether its margin fits the traveler's risk tolerance.

What happens if the flights are on separate tickets?

The second airline may treat a late arrival as a no-show. Plan for immigration where required, baggage collection, recheck and all cutoffs, and leave a much larger buffer or an overnight.

Where do I find the baggage allowance for a Cathay-Iberia itinerary?

Use the allowance printed on the ticket and receipt. Codeshare journeys can involve carrier-specific rules, and a separately booked sector can have a different allowance.

Do I need a visa to connect in Madrid?

It depends on nationality, documents and whether the itinerary requires entry into Spain. Check current official rules for the traveler. A codeshare label does not determine immigration eligibility.

Before booking

  • Search the complete journey for the exact travel date.
  • Compare both daily timetable patterns rather than assuming one departure time.
  • Check the airport codes and local arrival dates.
  • Read the "operated by" line on every sector.
  • Prefer one ticket when connecting through Madrid.
  • Confirm the terminal and connection path.
  • Ask whether bags will be tagged to the final airport.
  • Save the itinerary, fare rules and baggage receipt offline.
  • Check current entry and transit requirements for the passport used.
  • Recheck times and operating carriers before departure.

When this guide needs an update

Cathay's announcement and live Madrid offer support the October 25 daily schedule, four flight-number patterns and the four Iberia-operated codeshare destinations. Cathay's conditions and the official airport guides support the baggage and transfer cautions.

Public traveler discussions were used to identify recurring questions about short Madrid connections, separate bookings, boarding passes and through-checked bags. They were not used as proof of schedules, baggage entitlements or immigration rules.

Update this guide after the daily operation begins, if Cathay changes the winter timetable, if a codeshare destination is removed or added, or if the airlines materially change booking, baggage or transfer handling.
