The 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon is on Sunday, October 11. The first wheelchair race starts at 7:20 a.m., the professional runners start at 7:30 a.m. and three mass waves leave between 7:35 and 8:35 a.m. Spectators cannot enter the start or finish zones inside Grant Park. The workable plan is to choose two course locations near CTA stations, track the runner in the official app and agree on a reunion point before race morning.

Grant Park opens to runners at 5:30 a.m. and to spectators for the 27th Mile Post-Race Party and Runner Reunite area at 9:30 a.m. The route crosses 29 neighborhoods, so road closures make cars and rideshares poor tools for following a runner. Use the train for the long move, then walk.

Marathon runners and spectators on a Chicago street beneath an elevated train

The low-stress spectator plan: watch once downtown or on the North Side, move by CTA to Chinatown for a later sighting, then use the agreed reunion point after the finish. Do not promise a third stop unless the runner's pace leaves a large margin. Save the course map, CTA route, runner bib and meeting address offline.

This guide was checked on September 26 against the current official spectator schedule, course page and transport guidance. Recheck them during race week because the app, CTA advisories, weather status and street operations can change.

Chicago Marathon 2026 schedule

The marathon is the final event in a four-day program. Runners must collect their own packet at the Expo; race-morning collection is not listed.

Times can change. Runners should use the corral-close time printed in their current participant material, not only the wave start in this table.

Spectators cannot watch from the Grant Park start or finish zones

General spectators cannot accompany a runner into the controlled start area or wait beside the finish line. Those zones are limited to bibbed participants, event staff and eligible ticketed guests. This is the mistake most likely to break a family plan: “meet at the finish” is not precise enough.

Choose a visible letter in Runner Reunite or a named location several blocks west of the park. Add a second fallback and a time. For example: wait at the letter until 1:30 p.m.; if nobody arrives, move to the named cafe or hotel entrance. A fixed plan still works when a tracking update arrives late or a message will not send.

The official schedule opens Runner Reunite and the 27th Mile party to spectators at 9:30 a.m. A runner finishing after 3:30 p.m. follows a different official collection flow immediately west of the finish; spectators for those runners are directed to enter at 11th Street and Michigan Avenue. Check the latest participant guide if that cutoff may apply.

Two realistic CTA spectator plans

The marathon route folds back through the city. A point that looks close on a map can be separated by a closed course, a river crossing or a crowded platform. Build the plan around the runner's expected pace and two reliable sightings.

Plan A: downtown, then Chinatown

  1. Start near Grand, Chicago or Clark/Division on the Red Line for an early downtown or North Side sighting.
  2. Stay on the same side of the course needed to reach the station. Do not assume officials will allow a street crossing.
  3. Take the Red Line south to Cermak-Chinatown for the Mile 21.5 area.
  4. After the runner passes, either stay south of Grant Park for the final approach or take the train toward the agreed reunion point.

This plan reduces transfers and gives the runner time to cover the long middle section. It is still not guaranteed for a fast athlete. Use the app's pace estimate and leave the first location early.

Plan B: Lakeview, then the South Side

  1. Use Sheridan or Addison on the Red Line for the Mile 8 to 8.5 area.
  2. Move south before the runner reaches the halfway point.
  3. Choose Cermak-Chinatown at Mile 21.5, Sox-35th near Miles 23 to 23.5 or 35th-Bronzeville-IIT on the Green Line.
  4. Skip a finish-line chase. Go to the reunion location instead.

The official route identifies CTA access near many mile points. Current local coverage also lists Grand, Chicago, Clark/Division, Sheridan, Addison, UIC-Halsted, 18th, Cermak-Chinatown, Sox-35th, 35th-Bronzeville-IIT and Roosevelt as useful rail stops. Confirm elevator status and weekend service on the CTA alerts page before leaving.

Do not plan to follow a runner by car or rideshare

Street closures begin early and reopen progressively behind the field. The official course has a six-hour, 30-minute limit, and the vehicle behind the last participant helps determine when streets can reopen. There is no single citywide reopening time.

The organizer strongly recommends public transport. A rideshare driver may appear close in the app but remain on the wrong side of the course. The official race-week guidance places runner drop-off west of Michigan Avenue and south of Ida B. Wells Drive, but the final walk and security queue still take time.

If you must park, reserve before race day and study the approach. The four Millennium Garages are scheduled to stay open, but temporary closures can block the most obvious route. The organizer says a purchased pass can be accepted at another one of those four garages when access to the selected garage is difficult. That does not make driving an efficient multi-stop spectator plan.

The current event guidance lists a $7 Metra Saturday or Sunday day pass and a $10 weekend pass. The Metra Electric line serves McCormick Place for the Expo. Check the live fare and schedule before purchase rather than relying on a screenshot from this article.

Getting from O'Hare or Midway to race weekend

The CTA Blue Line connects O'Hare with downtown, while the Orange Line connects Midway with the Loop. Those rail links avoid a road journey through much of the event traffic, but luggage, late arrivals, planned work and station accessibility still affect the choice.

Do not land on Sunday morning and treat the marathon start as an ordinary airport transfer. Packet collection occurs at the Expo before race day, Grant Park access is controlled, and service changes can add time. International visitors should arrive early enough to collect the packet, sleep and test the route from the accommodation.

Save the hotel name and street address offline. A driver or station employee needs an address, not a booking screenshot with a map tile that has failed to load.

How the Chicago Marathon app and runner tracking work

The organizer says the 2026 Bank of America Chicago Marathon App, powered by TCS, will be available before race day. It includes runner tracking and race information. If it is not visible in an app store yet, use the organizer's page for the release link instead of installing an older version with a similar name.

Before Sunday:

  • install the official 2026 app from the organizer's current link;
  • add the runner by name or bib number;
  • record the expected pace and wave;
  • test notifications;
  • download the course and Grant Park maps;
  • share the two viewing points and reunion address in the group chat; and
  • take screenshots of the plan.

Tracking is an estimate based on timing points, not a live GPS dot attached to the runner. Allow a margin before leaving a viewing position. Dense crowds can also delay app refreshes and messages.

Maps and files to save before race morning

The official course page now links a 2026 course map and a Grant Park site map updated in September. Save both from the source rather than downloading a 2025 map from search results.

Save offlineWhy it matters
2026 course mapConfirms miles, route shape and official aid points
Grant Park site mapShows controlled areas, runner facilities and reunion locations
CTA route for both viewing pointsKeeps the plan usable when the station is crowded
CTA service and elevator alertsIdentifies a route or accessibility change
Runner name, bib, wave and paceRestores tracking details after an app reset
Hotel and reunion addressesGives the group a destination without a live map
Airline and airport transfer detailsProtects the wider trip from a race-day road assumption

The travel data calculator can estimate a plan for maps, messaging and tracking. A few app checks use little data compared with live video or repeated social uploads.

Grant Park security and prohibited items

Runners, volunteers, staff and spectators pass through security screening before entering Grant Park. The current prohibited list includes large bags, backpacks, suitcases, rolling bags, hard-sided coolers, chairs, alcohol, weapons, drones and pets other than trained service animals.

On the course, baby joggers, strollers, bicycles, skateboards and other unauthorized wheeled devices are prohibited. Runners cannot use hydration backpacks or vests with bladders. Front-pocket running vests, fuel belts, handheld bottles and soft flasks are allowed under the current rule, but security can require containers to be emptied.

Spectators should not enter the road, draw on the course or offer runners food and drink. The event specifically says participants are not allowed to accept food or beverages from spectators. Use an official cheer area without obstructing the field.

Weather, accessibility and safety

Chicago's October conditions can change between the pre-dawn wait and the afternoon finish. The marathon uses a color-coded Event Alert System from green through black. Race-week emails, the website, Expo announcements, course flags and message boards communicate the current level. Check the National Weather Service Chicago office as the event approaches, then follow the organizer's alert system on the day.

The course page lists standard and ADA portable toilets at each of 20 aid stations and medical support at 22 on-course locations. That does not mean every spectator station has step-free access. Check CTA elevator alerts for each planned station and leave a simpler fallback. A station that works for one mobility need may not work for another.

Call 911 or notify law enforcement for an immediate safety concern. Do not hide a bag or clothing beside the course. The organizer directs runners to gear check and asks everyone to report suspicious unattended items.

Using OpenSim during Chicago Marathon weekend

OpenSim's public catalog listed 37 United States data plans when checked on September 26. Current packages included fixed-data and daily-allowance choices, with AT&T and Verizon named across the displayed U.S. package set. Prices, networks, top-up eligibility and reduced-speed terms vary by plan, so inspect the selected card rather than assuming every option is identical.

For an international visitor, the useful advantage is preparation. A compatible phone can have an OpenSim United States eSIM installed before race morning while the usual SIM stays in the device, subject to that phone's dual-SIM behavior. That gives the traveler a data option for CTA alerts, runner tracking, maps and group messages without trying to buy and configure service in the Grant Park crowd.

Check whether the phone supports eSIM and when to install it before departure. A United States plan is the direct fit for Chicago. Compare USA and Canada, North America or Global 120 areas only when the itinerary actually includes those additional destinations.

OpenSim cannot guarantee normal performance in a crowd of this size, make the official tracker instantaneous or replace an offline reunion plan. Download the essentials even when mobile data is ready.

Chicago Marathon 2026 questions answered

What date is the 2026 Chicago Marathon?

The marathon is Sunday, October 11, 2026. The Expo runs October 8 to 10, and the Abbott Chicago 5K is on Saturday, October 10.

What time does the Chicago Marathon start?

Wheelchair starts begin at 7:20 a.m., professional runners start at 7:30 a.m., and mass waves start at 7:35, 8:00 and 8:35 a.m. Runners need the separate corral-close time for their wave.

Can spectators watch the start or finish in Grant Park?

Not from the controlled start and finish zones. Spectators can use the course and enter the 27th Mile party and Runner Reunite area from 9:30 a.m.

What is the best way to follow a runner?

Choose two CTA-accessible locations and use the official app to estimate arrival. Downtown or Lakeview followed by Chinatown is more realistic than trying to drive between several points.

Is the 2026 Chicago Marathon app available?

The organizer says the 2026 app will be available before race day. Use the link from the official marathon site so you do not install an outdated or unofficial tracker.

Can I use Uber or a taxi between viewing spots?

It is unreliable. Road closures can separate the vehicle from the requested pickup point. CTA rail and walking are usually more predictable for moving along the course.

Where should families meet after the race?

Use an agreed letter in Runner Reunite or a named location outside the controlled area. Add a fallback place and time in case tracking or messages are delayed.

Can spectators bring backpacks or chairs into Grant Park?

No. Large bags, backpacks, suitcases, rolling bags and chairs are on the current prohibited list. Security can also reject an item it considers unsafe or inappropriate.

Are strollers allowed?

Strollers and baby joggers are prohibited on the course. Families should confirm the current Grant Park access rule and avoid building a plan that requires crossing or occupying the race route.

What happens if a runner finishes after 3:30 p.m.?

The course page says those runners are directed to a collection area immediately west of the finish. Their spectators should use the entry at 11th Street and Michigan Avenue rather than relying only on the standard post-race party plan.

Final race-week checklist

  • Collect the packet at the Expo before race day.
  • Confirm the runner's wave, corral-close time, bib and expected pace.
  • Download the official 2026 app, course map and Grant Park map.
  • Pick two viewing points near CTA stations.
  • Check CTA service and elevator alerts.
  • Avoid a rideshare plan that crosses the course.
  • Pack within the current Grant Park rules.
  • Agree on a reunion point, fallback and time.
  • Check the weather and Event Alert System.
  • Keep tickets, maps, addresses and the group plan available offline.

This page will be updated if the organizer materially changes the 2026 schedule, maps, spectator access, app, transport, prohibited items, weather process or post-race flow. The official marathon and CTA pages remain the authority on race day.
