China Airlines baggage fees change October 16: new rates
China Airlines will change its excess-baggage, prepaid-baggage and pet-transport charges for tickets issued on or after October 16, 2026. The airline's new standard excess-bag table starts at US$160 per piece and reaches US$460, depending on the zones at each end of the journey.
The cutoff is about when the ticket is issued, not when the flight departs. A passenger traveling after October 16 may still have an earlier fee schedule if the ticket was issued before the cutoff. A later reissue could complicate that answer, so confirm the applicable table with China Airlines before paying.

The practical answer: check the ticket number and issue date first, then match the origin and destination to China Airlines' zones. Prepaid excess baggage remains 5% below the new standard rate where the option is available. Oversize, overweight, partner-flight and pet rules can add a separate charge or make online purchase unavailable.
What changes on October 16
China Airlines posted its fee-change notice on October 6. Its three-page rate attachment contains new US-dollar tables for a standard extra piece, a prepaid extra piece and pet transportation.
The notice does not say that the normal free allowance is changing. The included number of pieces and each piece's limit still come from the fare, cabin and itinerary shown on the ticket. The new table matters only when a traveler needs an extra service beyond that allowance.
The change is substantial on common Taiwan routes. The live China Airlines table checked on October 10 showed US$110 for one extra piece between Taiwan and Zone 1; the October 16 attachment lists US$160. Taiwan to Zone 2 moves from US$150 to US$210, while Taiwan to Zone 3 moves from US$180 to US$240. Use these comparisons to plan, but let the quote attached to the actual booking decide what is payable.
New standard excess-baggage prices
China Airlines prices one extra piece by travel zone. The airline's October 16 attachment lists these one-way charges in US dollars:
| Between | Taiwan | Zone 1 | Zone 2 | Zone 3 | Zone 4 | Zone 5 | Zone 6 |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | β | $160 | $210 | $240 | $270 | $290 | $340 |
| Zone 1 | $160 | $210 | $240 | $270 | $290 | $310 | $360 |
| Zone 2 | $210 | $240 | $270 | $290 | $310 | $330 | $380 |
| Zone 3 | $240 | $270 | $290 | $310 | $330 | $350 | $400 |
| Zone 4 | $270 | $290 | $310 | $330 | $350 | $370 | $420 |
| Zone 5 | $290 | $310 | $330 | $350 | $370 | $390 | $440 |
| Zone 6 | $340 | $360 | $380 | $400 | $420 | $440 | $460 |
There is one stated exception: a piece between Australia and New Zealand costs US$50.
Zone 1 includes Japan, South Korea, Palau, Guam, Hong Kong, mainland China, the Philippines, Thailand, Malaysia, Singapore, Indonesia, Vietnam and Cambodia. Zone 2 includes Australia, New Zealand, India and the rest of Asia apart from Taiwan and Zone 1. Zone 3 covers named North American cities plus Hawaii, Amsterdam, Frankfurt, Vienna, Rome, London, Prague and the Middle East. Zone 4 covers the rest of North America, the rest of Europe and Africa. Zone 5 is Central and South America, and Zone 6 is Myanmar.
Do not classify the whole journey from the connection airport alone. China Airlines says a stopover can create a separately priced onward CI or AE sector. The amount collected in another currency uses the exchange rate on the departure date.
New prepaid-baggage prices
Prepaid excess baggage keeps a 5% discount. The new attachment lists the following eligible prices:
| Between | Taiwan | Zone 1 | Zone 2 | Zone 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | β | $152 | $200 | $228 |
| Zone 1 | $152 | $200 | $228 | $257 |
| Zone 2 | $200 | $228 | $257 | $276 |
| Zone 3 | $228 | $257 | $276 | $295 |
The Australia-New Zealand prepaid exception is US$48 per piece. The table does not publish prepaid prices for Zones 4, 5 or 6, so do not assume the 5% calculation is available on an unlisted itinerary.
China Airlines' prepaid baggage page says online purchase is unavailable for group tickets in booking class G and for passengers using miles to upgrade. Its full conditions also limit eligibility by ticket stock, operating carrier and itinerary. If Manage Booking does not offer the service, contact China Airlines rather than treating the absence as proof that no fee applies.
New China Airlines pet fees
Pets travel under a separate fixed-rate table. For a pet and container weighing 32 kg or less, the new charge is:
| Between | Taiwan | Zone 1 | Zone 2 | Zone 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | β | $400 | $525 | $600 |
| Zone 1 | $400 | $525 | $600 | $675 |
| Zone 2 | $525 | $600 | $675 | $725 |
| Zone 3 | $600 | $675 | $725 | $775 |
For a pet and container weighing more than 32 kg, the new figures run from US$640 to US$1,260:
| Between | Taiwan | Zone 1 | Zone 2 | Zone 3 |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Taiwan | β | $640 | $840 | $960 |
| Zone 1 | $640 | $840 | $960 | $1,080 |
| Zone 2 | $840 | $960 | $1,080 | $1,160 |
| Zone 3 | $960 | $1,080 | $1,160 | $1,260 |
China Airlines says pets and their containers do not count toward the free baggage allowance. Its pet-transport page requires advance contact at least 48 hours before departure. Acceptance also depends on the route, aircraft, container, documents, temperature and available cargo space. A price in the table is not an acceptance confirmation.
Ten China Airlines fee checks before paying
1. Does October 16 refer to booking, ticketing or travel?
It refers to the date the ticket is issued. A reservation can be created before payment or ticketing, so the date the itinerary was first held is not necessarily the controlling date. Read the issue date on the e-ticket receipt.
If a ticket is reissued after October 16, ask China Airlines which table applies. The public notice does not explain every exchange or reissue case.
2. Is the free checked-bag allowance changing?
The October 6 notice announces changes to excess, prepaid excess and pet charges. It does not announce a new free allowance. The checked-baggage page and the e-ticket remain the right places to check included pieces and per-piece limits.
Do that before buying anything. A fare that already includes the needed piece does not require an excess-baggage purchase.
3. How do I find the price for one extra bag?
Identify the origin and destination used for the charge, map both to the zone definitions, then read across the standard table. Taiwan to Japan, for example, is Taiwan to Zone 1 and is listed at US$160 from October 16.
A stopover can split the pricing. On a mixed itinerary, save the route shown in the airline quote and ask which sector each charge covers.
4. Is prepaid excess baggage always cheaper?
The published prepaid table is 5% below the corresponding standard charge, subject to rounding. Taiwan to Zone 1 is US$152 prepaid rather than US$160 at the standard rate.
That does not mean every ticket can use the prepaid service. Group tickets, mileage upgrades and some carrier or ticket combinations need another purchase channel or may be ineligible.
5. Can I buy an overweight allowance instead of another piece?
An extra piece and an overweight bag are different charges. China Airlines says a bag over the cabin's weight limit can attract an additional fraction or multiple of the route's excess-piece price. A very heavy item may require advance approval or cargo handling.
Weigh each piece separately. Buying another piece does not make an existing over-limit suitcase compliant.
6. Does an oversized bag cost the same as an extra bag?
Not necessarily. China Airlines' excess-baggage rules apply an added charge when total dimensions exceed the normal limit. The multiplier depends on size, while items over the airline's maximum can be accepted only with space available or sent as cargo.
Measure wheels, handles and protruding parts. A bag can be within its weight allowance and still be oversized.
7. Which rules apply on a codeshare or partner flight?
Check the operating carrier on every segment. China Airlines states that another carrier's rules may apply when the itinerary includes flights it does not operate. The ticketing airline's logo alone does not resolve that question.
For a through itinerary, ask the seller which carrier's allowance and fee apply to the full journey. For separate tickets, expect to collect and recheck bags unless both airlines confirm otherwise.
8. Is the pet price based on the animal alone?
No. The weight test includes the pet and its container. A combined weight above 32 kg moves to the higher table. An exceptionally large container can also trigger an oversize charge.
Weigh the travel-ready container, including absorbent material and required fittings, rather than estimating from the pet's last veterinary weight.
9. Does paying the pet fee guarantee carriage?
No. China Airlines requires advance application and says acceptance can depend on aircraft type, route restrictions, temperature, documentation and cargo capacity. It does not accept pets as checked baggage between Taiwan and Hong Kong, and seasonal or aircraft restrictions can affect other services.
Obtain written confirmation for every flight before making non-refundable arrangements around the journey.
10. What should I save after buying baggage?
Keep the e-ticket receipt, the excess-baggage receipt and a screenshot of the confirmed service. Download them before leaving reliable Wi-Fi. If the flight changes, ask whether the purchase moves with the booking or needs a refund and repurchase.
Do not rely on an old screenshot as a price promise for a different ticket. The issue date, sector, operating carrier and departure-date exchange rate can all matter.
Mobile data for checking baggage charges abroad
China Airlines uses Taiwan as its main hub and serves many Zone 1 destinations. If a trip combines Taiwan with places such as Japan, South Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand, Singapore or Vietnam, one regional data plan can be more practical than separate country plans.
OpenSim currently lists an Asia 12-area eSIM covering Taiwan and 11 other destinations, plus an Asia 20-area eSIM for a wider itinerary. Compare the live coverage, allowance, validity and top-up status before checkout. These are data-only travel plans: they do not change China Airlines' baggage allowance, guarantee that Manage Booking will work or include inflight Wi-Fi.
China Airlines' notice, attachment and baggage pages were checked on October 10, 2026. Recheck the airline's live quote before paying, especially for a reissued ticket, partner flight, stopover, oversized item or pet.
