Colorado mobile ID at TSA: what DEN travelers still need

Colorado residents can now use a mobile driver license from the myColorado app at participating TSA checkpoints, including Denver International Airport. The new credential is called the myColorado mDL. It is not the older Colorado Digital ID that many residents already have in the same app.

Set it up before airport day, confirm that it shows the required REAL ID status for domestic air travel, and still carry the physical card. The state calls the mDL a complement to the plastic credential, not a replacement.

This guide was checked on September 3, 2026, two days after the public launch was reported. It uses the current myColorado instructions, TSA identification guidance, app-store requirements and public questions from Colorado travelers.

The short answer: At a participating TSA reader, open myColorado mDL, present its QR code, review the requested data and approve the exchange. Do not present the similar-looking Colorado Digital ID tab. Keep the physical ID within reach in case the lane, reader, phone or account does not cooperate.

What Colorado launched

Colorado announced the new myColorado Mobile Driver License at Denver International Airport at the end of August. The state's live mDL page says eligible Colorado residents can use it at DEN and at TSA checkpoints elsewhere that accept mobile driver licenses.

That last condition matters. The credential may be accepted at more than 250 participating airports, but acceptance depends on the airport and checkpoint reader. It does not mean every lane at every airport can scan it. Check TSA's current digital-ID information before relying on the phone at the return airport.

The mDL meets the ISO/IEC 18013-5 mobile identity standard. It is a government-issued digital credential, not a photo of the plastic license and not a screenshot.

Four Colorado credentials that are easy to confuse

The naming is the main trap. Someone who opens myColorado and sees a digital picture of a license may reasonably think that is the airport credential. It is not. The state tells travelers to find the blue mDL option with the airplane icon in the Wallet section.

Apple Wallet and Google Wallet can also hold Colorado-issued mobile IDs. Those credentials use the same underlying state record and approved mobile-ID standards, but the screen and presentation steps are different. Who can add the myColorado mDL

You need a current Colorado driver license or state-issued identification card. New myColorado users must create an account and verify their identity. Existing users should update the app before looking for the new mDL option.

The current technical requirements are:

• iOS 17 or later on iPhone;
• Android 13 or later on an Android phone;
• the current myColorado app;
• a valid, unexpired physical Colorado license or ID card;
• access to the account verification method; and
• a camera for the card scans and selfie.

The myColorado account instructions say newly issued credentials can take up to four business days to become available in the system. A temporary paper license can be used for some account functions, but it cannot be used to add the mDL. If the new plastic card has not arrived, do not plan an airport shortcut around the app.

The state also limits active mDLs. Its current FAQ allows the credential in up to two approved mobile wallets and one watch. Changing phones is not a simple sign-in. Remove the mDL from the old phone first, then provision it again on the new device. If the old phone is lost or the app was deleted before the credential was removed, DMV support may need to cancel the old enrollment.

How to add it before the trip

Do this at home, not while the security queue moves behind you.

1. Update or install the official myColorado app from the Apple App Store or Google Play.
2. Sign in and open the Wallet section.
3. Tap Add your myColorado mDL, then review the terms.
4. Scan the front and back of the physical Colorado card.
5. Take the requested selfie.
6. Review the identity information and submit it to the Colorado DMV for verification.
7. Wait until the approved mDL appears in the Wallet.
8. Open its detail screen and check the REAL ID status before airport day.

Approval is not guaranteed to be instant. The state may request more information, mail a verification letter or require contact with an agent. A last-minute flight does not change that review process.

Once it is active, practice opening the correct credential. You should be able to reach the mDL from the Wallet without searching through the app at the checkpoint. Keep the app updated, charge the phone and place the physical card somewhere accessible.

Does the Colorado mDL need to be REAL ID compliant?

The state can issue a myColorado mDL from a credential that is not REAL ID compliant, but that does not make the digital version acceptable for a flight. The mDL inherits the REAL ID status of the physical card.

For domestic air travel, the relevant credential must meet TSA's REAL ID requirement or you must carry another accepted document, such as a passport. The myColorado app uses an airplane symbol to indicate REAL ID status on the mDL. Check the detail screen rather than guessing from the fact that enrollment succeeded.

TSA's acceptable identification page remains the authority for the current document list. An mDL does not repair an expired, suspended, revoked or noncompliant underlying credential.

What happens at the TSA reader

The myColorado process uses a QR code rather than asking you to hand the phone to an officer.

1. Open the myColorado app and sign in.
2. Select myColorado mDL from the Wallet.
3. Tap Present QR code.
4. Hold the code where the participating reader can scan it.
5. Review the information the reader requests.
6. Approve the exchange on the phone.
7. Follow the officer's next instruction.

The checkpoint system takes a live image and compares it with the credential photo. KKTV's launch report quotes TSA confirming that both use of the mDL and the facial comparison are optional. A traveler can choose the normal physical-ID process instead.

The state says the reader can verify identity, flight details and screening type, which may remove the need to hand over the boarding pass at that reader. Keep the valid boarding pass available anyway. The airline still controls check-in and boarding, and a different airport step may request it.

Do not leave the physical card at home

This is the least exciting part of the launch and the most useful.

The official Colorado page tells travelers to bring the physical driver license or state ID as backup. A reader can be unavailable. A lane may not participate. The phone can be flat, damaged, lost, locked or stuck on an account check. TSA can also ask for another form of identification.

If you are driving to the airport, the physical license has another job. Colorado says drivers must carry it while operating a motor vehicle, even when the mDL is active.

For an international flight, take the passport and every document required by the destination. A state mobile driver license is not a passport, visa, residence permit or proof of permission to enter another country. It does not replace the document used at airline check-in, immigration or the foreign border.

What happens to the identity data

Presenting the mDL is a consent step. The phone shows the requested data before you approve its release. Colorado says the state does not track where the credential is presented. The usage history, including when and what was shared, is encrypted and stored on the device.

TSA's digital identification privacy answer says it receives digital-ID information with the passenger's consent and does not normally copy or store it. TSA notes an exception for limited testing environments used to evaluate facial-comparison accuracy, where it says passengers are informed through signs and notices.

Those statements describe the current government processes. They do not mean every business or third-party verifier follows the same policy. Read the request on the phone before approving it.

A phone-ready airport checklist

Before leaving for DEN or another participating airport:

• update myColorado and confirm the mDL opens;
• check that you are selecting the mDL, not Colorado Digital ID;
• verify the mDL's REAL ID status;
• confirm the departure and return airports currently accept mobile IDs;
• charge the phone and pack a small power bank within airline limits;
• save the boarding pass in its supported offline format;
• carry the physical ID;
• carry a passport for international travel;
• keep the airline booking reference outside one locked app; and
• allow normal security time instead of assuming the mDL guarantees a faster line.

Mobile data after the checkpoint

The myColorado mDL solves one identity step. It does not provide data after landing, replace the airline app or make a foreign transport app work. For an international trip, set up maps, tickets, translation tools and destination connectivity as separate parts of the plan.

A Roaming eSIM can supply destination data on a compatible unlocked phone while the usual US line remains installed. That is useful after the airport for live transport, accommodation messages and map changes. It does not make the mDL valid abroad and does not improve TSA reader acceptance.

Is the Colorado Digital ID accepted by TSA now?

No. The state distinguishes the older Colorado Digital ID from the new myColorado mDL. Use the mDL option in the app Wallet at a participating TSA reader.

Do I still need my physical Colorado license?

Yes. Colorado tells travelers to carry it as backup. Drivers also need the physical license while operating a vehicle in the state.

Does the myColorado mDL need REAL ID status?

It needs REAL ID status when the airport use requires REAL ID. The mDL inherits the status of the physical credential. A noncompliant physical card does not become compliant when added to the app.

Can I use the mDL outside Denver airport?

Yes, at participating TSA checkpoints that accept mobile driver licenses. Check the current airport and lane before the trip because participation is not a promise that every checkpoint has a compatible reader.

Is the myColorado mDL the same as Colorado ID in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?

They use the same Colorado identity record and approved mobile-ID standards, but they live in different wallets and use different presentation steps. Follow the instructions for the wallet where you enrolled the credential.

Which phones support the myColorado mDL?

The current state page lists iOS 17 or later and Android 13 or later. The app must also support the device and be updated to the current version.

Can I enroll with a temporary paper license?

No. A temporary credential can support some myColorado account functions, but the mDL enrollment requires the valid plastic card.

What should I do before changing phones?

Delete the mDL from the old phone inside the app, then provision it on the new phone. Simply signing in on a borrowed or replacement phone does not move the credential.

Does TSA store my mobile ID?

TSA says it receives the information with consent and does not normally copy or store it. It identifies a limited-testing exception and says participants are notified when that applies.

Does the Colorado mDL replace a passport?

No. It is a state identity credential for accepted verification points. International airline and border processes still require the passport and any visa or entry documents for the route.
