Dialog launches a 5G eSIM MiFi in Sri Lanka

Dialog Axiata launched the Dialog 5G Ultra MiFi MF511 in Sri Lanka on September 10, 2026. The portable router supports eSIM and nano-SIM, connects to Dialog's 5G and 4G networks, and shares data over Wi-Fi 6 with up to 16 devices.

The eSIM label needs context. Dialog's product page says the MF511 is network-locked to Dialog and Airtel Mobile, so it is not an open travel router that can automatically accept any provider's eSIM profile.

The traveler answer: the MF511 is most useful when several people or devices need to share one local Dialog connection. A solo visitor who only needs data on an unlocked phone can avoid the LKR 39,990 router purchase with a phone-based Roaming eSIM. Dialog has not published MF511-specific tourist registration or tourist-plan guidance, so confirm those points before buying the hardware.

What Dialog's new 5G eSIM MiFi includes

Dialog's September 10 announcement and current MF511 product page list the same core travel features:

• 5G standalone and non-standalone support, with 4G fallback
• Wi-Fi 6 with AX1800-class local connectivity
• eSIM and physical nano-SIM support
• connection sharing for up to 16 users
• a 5,000mAh battery
• up to 16 hours of company-claimed continuous use
• USB-C and a 2.4-inch display
• a browser-based interface for device management

The router weighs about 180g. Dialog lists 5G bands n1, n3, n40, n41 and n78, alongside several LTE bands. Those specifications describe the hardware; they do not promise a particular speed at a hotel, on a train or in a rural area.

Every connected phone, tablet and laptop shares the same mobile link and data allowance. Cloud backups, operating-system updates and video calls can therefore consume a plan much faster than ordinary maps and messaging.

The network lock limits what the eSIM can do

An eSIM is a downloadable carrier profile, but hardware support does not mean unrestricted provider choice. Dialog states that the MF511 is locked to Dialog and Airtel Mobile networks.

That makes the router's eSIM useful for compatible profiles within Dialog's supported setup. It does not establish compatibility with an unrelated travel eSIM, even if that plan permits hotspot use on a phone. Direct installation in a router and tethering from a supported handset are different uses.

Before trying any third-party profile, ask both the provider and Dialog to confirm the exact MF511 model, installation method and plan terms. Roaming eSIM should be treated as phone-first for this comparison; we are not claiming that its Sri Lanka plans can be installed directly in the MF511.

Dialog MF511 price, plans and availability

Dialog lists the MF511 at LKR 39,990 online. The company says it is available from its website and selected Dialog outlets, with credit-card payment plans of up to 60 months and applicable Club Vision discounts for eligible in-store purchases.

The router is promoted with Dialog Ultra plans 1495, 1895, 2595, 2995 and 3999. Dialog's current 5G page lists them as monthly plans with 25GB, 40GB, 75GB, 100GB and 200GB of anytime data respectively. The page also lists unlimited any-network voice and 1,000 any-network SMS with each plan.

Dialog says these plans use 5G where available and continue over 4G elsewhere. The launch does not say that the router purchase includes a plan, that every buyer qualifies for every plan, or that a tourist can register the MF511 eSIM under the same process as a phone eSIM.

What a visitor still needs to confirm

Dialog's separate tourist SIM and eSIM page says foreign visitors can buy a local connection online or at airport and island-wide outlets using a passport. Its online form includes passport, email, photo and identity-verification steps.

Those instructions are useful for a phone connection, but the checked pages do not explicitly extend them to the MF511. Before paying for the router, a visitor should obtain clear answers to these questions:

• Can a passport holder register the MF511 eSIM?
• Must the device use an Ultra plan, or can it use a tourist data plan?
• Does the selected profile include a local number, calls or SMS?
• Can the router be purchased and activated at the airport?
• What happens if the QR code or activation fails after the traveler leaves the outlet?
• Is the device eligible for returns after an eSIM profile has been activated?

Do not assume that the general Dialog eSIM activation time applies to this router. Dialog's standard eSIM page says a new profile can take about 30 minutes when documents are in order, but it does not give an MF511-specific activation estimate.

More than 1,000 5G sites do not mean continuous 5G

Dialog says its network now has more than 1,000 live 5G sites across all 25 Sri Lankan districts. That is a footprint statement, not a promise of blanket 5G service within every district.

Dialog's coverage checker says its map is a guide and that buildings, trees, weather and other local conditions can affect service. The operator also notes that congestion and location influence the 5G experience.

Check the exact accommodation and route rather than relying on a district-level headline. A trip through Colombo, Kandy, Ella and the south coast can move between dense city coverage, hill-country terrain and long road or rail sections. The MF511 should fall back to 4G where compatible service is available, but actual signal and speed still vary.

Dialog MiFi, local phone eSIM or Roaming eSIM

The three options solve different problems.

The public Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on September 13. It listed 16 Sri Lanka packages using Mobitel, with 3G and 4G shown in the package data rather than 5G. Fixed-data examples included 1GB for seven days at USD2.10, 3GB for 30 days at USD5.98 and 10GB for 30 days at USD15.80.

Those examples are not a like-for-like substitute for Dialog's router and local Ultra plans. They are phone-data choices with different networks, allowances and prices. Availability and final checkout totals can change, and calls, SMS, hotspot support, activation timing and local-number availability must be checked on the exact package.

🏆 Roaming eSIM wins for a simple, phone-first arrival: there is no separate router to buy, carry or charge, and the traveler can select a published allowance and validity before departure. Dialog's MF511 wins for supported local 5G and sharing one connection with up to 16 devices.

How much does the Dialog MF511 cost?

Dialog listed the router at LKR 39,990 on September 13, 2026. A mobile plan is a separate decision; confirm the checkout total and chosen plan before paying.

Can the MF511 accept any travel eSIM?

No universal compatibility is published. Dialog says the router is network-locked to Dialog and Airtel Mobile, so eSIM support does not make it an open global router.

Can I install a Roaming eSIM directly in the MF511?

Does an MF511 plan include a local number, calls and texts?

The Ultra plan page lists voice and SMS allowances, but the launch does not explain how those services work through this data-sharing device. Confirm the selected profile and account before relying on a number or verification texts.

Is the MF511 better than using a Roaming eSIM on a phone?

It depends on the trip. The MF511 is stronger for several devices and supported local 5G. A phone-based Roaming eSIM is simpler for one traveler who does not need dedicated router hardware.
