Dubai Click & Travel: who can use mobile immigration?
Dubai launched Click & Travel on September 7, 2026. The service lets a passport-control officer bring a connected biometric device to a passenger inside the airport instead of processing every traveler at a fixed counter. GDRFA Dubai says the identity check and transaction can take about 12 to 15 seconds, but that is the processing time once an officer starts the check, not a guarantee that immigration will take 15 seconds from queue to exit.
Eligibility depends on the direction of travel. All departing passengers, including visitors, can be processed through Click & Travel when officers deploy it. On arrival, the first phase covers only UAE citizens and residents. Arriving tourists should still plan for a Smart Gate or staffed immigration counter.

The practical answer: Click & Travel is extra airport capacity, not a lane that travelers reserve. Keep your passport and boarding pass ready, follow the route assigned by airport staff, and use the mobile check if an officer offers it. Do not shorten a connection because the device itself can complete a transaction in 12 to 15 seconds.
Dubai Click & Travel eligibility at a glance
The GDRFA Dubai launch notice draws a clear line between arrivals and departures.
| Passenger and direction | Current Click & Travel position | Sensible airport plan |
|---|---|---|
| UAE citizen arriving in Dubai | Included in the first phase | Follow staff directions; the mobile service, a Smart Gate or a desk may be used |
| UAE resident arriving in Dubai | Included in the first phase | Keep passport and residence details ready; do not assume the mobile team will be in the hall |
| Visitor arriving in Dubai | Not included in the first arrival phase | Plan for an eligible Smart Gate or staffed counter |
| UAE citizen departing Dubai | Eligible when the service is deployed | Use the route directed by staff |
| UAE resident departing Dubai | Eligible when the service is deployed | Use the route directed by staff |
| Visitor departing Dubai | Eligible when the service is deployed | Watch for an officer-operated mobile check, but keep the normal route as the baseline |
| Passenger staying airside in transit | Relevant only if the itinerary requires passport control | Confirm baggage, boarding pass and terminal arrangements with the airline |
GDRFA says arrival access will expand gradually according to approved plans and operational requirements. It has not published a date for tourist arrivals. Until a newer official notice changes that position, an arriving visitor should not expect Click & Travel.
How Dubai's mobile immigration service works
The passenger does not turn a phone into an immigration gate. A passport-control officer carries the mobile device. It connects to GDRFA systems and databases, uses biometric verification, and allows the officer to complete an entry or departure transaction at the passenger's location inside the terminal.
Airport teams can deploy the devices when queues build, during periods of operational pressure or in an emergency. This makes the service useful as flexible capacity. It does not mean an officer will walk up to every passenger on every flight.
The official release reports 31,373 transactions from the start of pilot operations in May through August 31, 2026. That figure shows that the equipment was used at operational scale before launch. It does not predict the wait for a specific arrival bank, terminal or date.
GDRFA describes the equipment as part of its own secure operating system. The launch material does not instruct passengers to download a Click & Travel app, create an account, scan a QR code or book a time. Avoid unofficial downloads or messages that claim to enroll you in the service.
What the 12 to 15 second claim really means
GDRFA's figure covers identity verification and completion of the immigration transaction on the mobile device. Several other parts of the journey still take time:
- walking from the aircraft to passport control;
- waiting until an officer or gate becomes available;
- document questions or a referral for another check;
- moving between terminals or concourses;
- collecting checked baggage;
- clearing customs;
- reaching a transfer desk when the next boarding pass is missing.
A 12-second device transaction can help a queue move. It cannot make the aircraft park sooner, transfer a bag between separate tickets or waive an entry requirement. Keep the same airport and connection buffer you would use without the new service.
Click & Travel, Smart Gates and staffed counters compared
Dubai now has several passport-control routes. They are complementary rather than interchangeable.
| Route | Who operates it | When it helps | Main limitation |
|---|---|---|---|
| Click & Travel | A passport-control officer with a mobile device | When airport teams need flexible capacity away from fixed counters | Travelers cannot rely on it being deployed for a particular flight; arrival eligibility is narrower than departure eligibility |
| Smart Gate | The passenger follows an automated gate process | When a registered and eligible traveler reaches an operating gate | Eligibility and successful biometric matching still apply; some travelers are directed to a desk |
| Staffed counter | An immigration officer at a fixed position | Standard clearance and cases needing officer review | The queue can be longer during a busy arrival or departure bank |
The official GDRFA Smart Gate eligibility page lists UAE and GCC nationals, UAE residents, visa-on-arrival and Schengen Union guests, and holders of pre-issued visas among the eligible groups. Registration is still required. The Smart Gate registration inquiry lets travelers check registration with passport or other official details.
Click & Travel does not broaden Smart Gate eligibility. It also does not make a tourist eligible for mobile processing on arrival during the first phase.
What arriving tourists should do at Dubai airport
An arriving tourist should plan around the normal immigration process, then accept a faster route if airport staff direct them to one.
- Check the current UAE entry requirement for your nationality and travel document before flying.
- Keep the physical passport in hand luggage and make sure it is the document attached to the booking and visa, where a visa is required.
- Follow the immigration signs after leaving the aircraft.
- Use a Smart Gate only if the official eligibility check and airport staff indicate that you can.
- Use a staffed counter when directed or when the gate cannot complete the check.
- Do not wait for a Click & Travel officer. Arriving visitors are outside the first phase announced on September 7.
- Keep the hotel address, onward transport and a contact number available offline.
Click & Travel is a processing method, not permission to enter. A visa, visa-on-arrival status or residence document remains a separate requirement. The service cannot correct an expired passport, an incorrect visa or a booking made under different document details.
What departing visitors should expect
Visitors are included on departure, but availability remains operational. If a mobile officer is working in your part of the terminal, follow the officer's instructions and present the documents requested. If not, continue to the Smart Gates or counters shown by airport staff.
Do not leave for the airport later because the device can process a check quickly. Airline bag-drop deadlines, security screening, terminal distances and boarding cutoffs do not change. A passenger who misses bag drop cannot recover the time at passport control.
The National and Gulf News reported that mobile teams can give priority to families, children and People of Determination when deployed. Treat that as an airport management option, not a bookable assistance service. Arrange required assistance with the airline in advance and identify yourself to airport staff on arrival.
Does Click & Travel change a Dubai connection?
Only if the connection requires passport control and the mobile service is operating for that passenger group. Some through-ticket connections remain airside, while other itineraries require immigration because the traveler must collect baggage, change airports, change an unprotected ticket or enter Dubai during a long stop.
Before departure, ask the operating airline:
- whether the bag is checked through to the final destination;
- whether both boarding passes are issued;
- whether the connection stays airside;
- whether a terminal transfer is required;
- who handles rebooking if the inbound flight is late.
Do not use Click & Travel's 12 to 15 second transaction time to calculate a minimum connection. The service has no power over aircraft delays, baggage delivery, security screening or a transfer between Dubai International Airport and Al Maktoum International Airport.
Should you still carry your passport and boarding pass?
Yes. The mobile device can read an electronic passport and verify biometrics, but no official launch statement tells travelers to pack the passport away. GDRFA's separate Smart Gate instructions tell passengers to keep the passport and boarding pass ready in case they are required.
That is the safer rule for every route through the airport. Carry the original passport, not only a photograph. Keep the boarding pass accessible even when it is stored in an airline app, and save an offline copy in case connectivity or the app fails.
A renewed passport can also affect existing automated-gate registration. Use GDRFA's current registration inquiry before relying on the Smart Gates, and bring any residence document connected to the trip.
Biometrics, privacy and manual alternatives
The official Click & Travel announcement confirms biometric verification and secure integration with GDRFA databases. It does not publish a traveler-facing privacy notice that explains data retention, a universal opt-out procedure or how every exceptional case is handled.
If you cannot complete a biometric step, need an accessibility adjustment or want to ask about another process, tell the officer before the check. Do not rely on an online anecdote as proof that the same alternative will apply to your document and journey.
The existing immigration counters remain part of the airport system. The new mobile devices add capacity; GDRFA has not announced that they replace all counters or Smart Gates.
Useful apps and offline information for Dubai airport
Click & Travel itself does not create a new download task for the passenger. The more useful phone preparation is tied to the rest of the journey:
- Your airline app: save both boarding passes, the booking reference and any terminal change.
- Dubai Airports: check terminal information and the live flight board before setting out.
- GDRFA Smart Gate inquiry: verify registration through the official web service rather than an unofficial app.
- An offline map: save the airport, hotel and first transport stop.
- A ride or taxi app: compare the pickup instructions with the signed airport taxi rank. The UAE plan page lists currently reviewed travel apps and their service limits.
- A translation or notes app: keep the hotel address, host contact and important medical information in plain text.
Screenshots are useful, but they do not replace the original passport or an immigration decision. Store sensitive document images securely and avoid sending them to a stranger who claims to arrange mobile clearance.
Mobile data after Dubai immigration
Mobile data is useful once the traveler needs a driver, hotel message, flight update or map. It does not speed up passport control or change eligibility for Click & Travel.
The public Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on September 21 and returned 19 United Arab Emirates packages. The catalog included fixed-data and daily-allowance options. Reviewed UAE records listed the du network and up to 5G where available. Prices, validity, start rules, top-up support and daily high-speed limits depend on the selected package, so read the live card rather than applying one plan's terms to all 19.
Where Roaming eSIM has a practical edge: the United Arab Emirates Roaming eSIM page shows the plan's allowance, validity, current retail price and high-speed terms before checkout. A traveler with an unlocked compatible phone can install before flying, keep the usual SIM in the handset, and use the published 24/7 support route if setup needs attention. Airport Wi-Fi or an included home-carrier roaming allowance may be the better choice for a short transit, and neither option affects immigration.
Use the travel data calculator for maps, messages and video, check whether the phone supports Roaming eSIM, and review when to install it before travel. Save the first address and airline contact offline even with a data plan.
Questions travelers are asking about Dubai Click & Travel
1. Can tourists use Click & Travel when arriving in Dubai?
Not in the first arrival phase announced on September 7, 2026. Arrival use currently covers UAE citizens and residents. Tourists should plan for an eligible Smart Gate or staffed counter.
2. Can tourists use it when departing Dubai?
Yes, visitors are included on departure when airport teams deploy the service. Eligibility does not guarantee that a mobile officer will be available for a particular flight.
3. Do I need to download a Click & Travel app?
GDRFA describes an officer-operated mobile device connected to its systems. The launch instructions do not tell passengers to download an app, register or reserve a slot.
4. Can I request the mobile officer in advance?
No public reservation process was announced. Airport teams deploy the devices according to passenger flow and operational need.
5. Does immigration really take 12 to 15 seconds?
GDRFA says the identity verification and transaction on the device can take about 12 to 15 seconds. That does not include walking, queueing, referrals, baggage or customs.
6. Does Click & Travel replace the Dubai Smart Gates?
No. It adds a mobile officer-operated option. Smart Gates and staffed counters remain available, subject to eligibility and airport instructions.
7. Can children and families use the service?
Children and families can be prioritized when mobile teams are deployed, according to reporting that quotes GDRFA officials. Families should still follow airline assistance procedures and allow normal airport time.
8. What happens if the biometric check does not work?
Follow the officer's direction. The launch notice does not promise that every passenger or document will complete the mobile process, and staffed immigration remains available for cases requiring another route.
9. Do I still need my physical passport?
Yes. Keep it ready. The mobile service can read document and biometric information, but it is not a digital-passport replacement and does not remove airline or immigration document requirements.
10. Does Click & Travel help during an airside connection?
Only if the itinerary requires passport control and the service is deployed for that traveler. Confirm through-checked baggage, boarding passes, terminals and visa needs with the airline before travel.
Official sources and review date
The eligibility split, pilot total, processing-time claim and deployment purpose come from the September 7 GDRFA Dubai announcement. Smart Gate eligibility and use were checked against GDRFA's current official pages. Operational context was cross-checked with reporting from The National and Gulf News.
Roaming eSIM reviewed this guide on September 21, 2026. We will update it when GDRFA changes arrival eligibility, publishes a traveler registration method, expands airport coverage or provides new instructions about documents and biometrics. Until then, follow the latest direction from GDRFA, Dubai Airports, your airline and the officer in the terminal.
