East Midlands Railway strike: August 31 and September dates

East Midlands Railway is running a significantly reduced Intercity and Connect timetable today, Monday, August 31, 2026. EMR advises passengers to travel only when essential. The next announced strike dates are Wednesday, September 16 and Thursday, September 17, but their timetables have not yet been published.
EMR Regional services are not affected by the strike itself. Intercity and Connect trains to and from London St Pancras are affected, with no EMR rail replacement buses. Check the live EMR strike page and National Rail status before leaving.
The practical answer for August 31: do not rely on the usual timetable. Find the exact strike-day train, plan around the published last departure, and allow for queues at St Pancras and Sheffield. EMR says you may not board the train you intended to take.

The September dates are confirmed strike notices, not confirmed copies of the August timetable. Travelers should not use today's train times to plan September 16 or 17.
August 31 first and last EMR trains
EMR lists the following Monday strike timetable. These are route endpoints, so an intermediate station may have a different first or last workable train.

Intercity services run about once an hour between London and Nottingham, and between London and Sheffield or Derby. Connect runs about once an hour between London and Corby. EMR says these services start after 07:00 and finish before 19:00, but several last through departures leave much earlier than 19:00.
No EMR rail replacement buses are provided for the strike timetable. First Class is not available on strike days.
Queues at St Pancras and Sheffield can change the plan
EMR says queuing systems will operate at London St Pancras and Sheffield. A valid ticket does not guarantee that the traveler will board the intended train or find a seat.
Avoid planning around the final departure when a flight, event, hotel check-in or onward connection depends on it. Search from the real origin to the final destination, then choose an earlier train that leaves a workable backup.
Save the strike timetable and live journey result before entering a crowded station. If platform information changes, follow staff instructions rather than a saved screenshot.
What changes for Luton Airport journeys
Luton Airport Parkway is served by both EMR and Thameslink. EMR Connect is reduced by the strike, while National Rail says Thameslink also has an amended Bank Holiday Monday service. A cancelled EMR train does not prove that every Parkway service is cancelled, but a normal weekday frequency should not be assumed either.
Search the complete route by operator. Then check whether the original ticket is valid on the alternative service before boarding. The current EMR alternative-route table did not list a Luton arrangement for Monday when we checked. EMR does not publish a general Monday rule that makes every ticket valid on every other operator.
The Luton DART connects the terminal with Luton Airport Parkway. A through ticket to or from Luton Airport normally includes the DART. A ticket ending at Luton Airport Parkway normally does not. Read the station name on the booking.
If the rail plan leaves too little margin for check-in, compare the airport's coach choices and a licensed taxi quote. Confirm the refund or ticket-change position before buying a replacement where possible.
August 31 ticket flexibility and refunds
Tickets dated Monday, August 31 can be used on EMR and eligible connecting services on:
- Friday, August 28;
- Saturday, August 29;
- Tuesday, September 1; or
- Wednesday, September 2.
The alternative-date arrangement excludes connections with Grand Central, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains and Lumo. An Advance ticket can be used on the listed dates without changing its printed date. A move outside the listed window must be handled by the original retailer; EMR says the administration fee is waived, but a fare difference may apply.
If the strike means you no longer travel, request a full refund from the business that sold the ticket. EMR says both legs can be refunded when an unused return, including a return made from two Advance singles, has one leg on an affected strike date.
Refund and Delay Repay are different:
- use a refund when the journey is not made;
- use Delay Repay when you travel and arrive late; and
- keep the ticket, booking record, cancellation message and actual arrival time.
Do not buy a replacement and assume its full cost will be repaid. Ask the retailer or operator about acceptance and reimbursement first when time allows.
September 16 and 17 ticket choices
EMR has not yet published first trains, last trains or route frequencies for the September strikes. It has published broader date flexibility:

The same Grand Central, Heathrow Express, Hull Trains and Lumo exclusions apply. EMR also warns that Intercity reductions can affect non-strike days, so moving a ticket still requires a fresh journey check.
Update this page, the EMR app and the original booking when the September timetable appears. Do not use the August 31 train table as a forecast.
Passenger Assist and accessibility
EMR says Passenger Assist remains available with its current two-hour booking window. The operator will contact travelers whose booked assistance is tied to an affected service and offer a refund or rescheduling.
A changed journey may involve several operators. Contact each operator involved in the replacement route. For Luton Airport, railway assistance and airline or terminal assistance are separate arrangements, with the DART transfer between them.
Crowding matters even when a train runs. Leave more time with luggage, children or limited mobility, and avoid a last-train plan where an earlier workable service exists.

- Search the full journey in EMR or National Rail, including the final connection.
- Confirm the operator for every leg.
- Note the first and last workable strike-day trains.
- Check the ticket restriction before using a different operator.
- Save one earlier backup instead of relying on the final train.
- For Luton, confirm whether the booking says Airport or Airport Parkway.
- Download the ticket, route, airport or hotel address and operator contact details.
- If the trip no longer works, request the refund from the original retailer.

Complete sign-in and payment verification before the journey. A ticket or airline app that asks for a code sent to the usual SIM can be difficult to recover after changing phone settings.
