Visitors browsing red-roofed Christmas market stalls beside the Scottish National Gallery in Edinburgh in December 2018

Edinburgh's Christmas runs from November 14, 2026, to January 3, 2027. The main market in East Princes Street Gardens is free to enter, while rides and experiences cost extra. Check the date of the attraction you want before booking a trip: Santa's Stories and the family ice sessions start later than the market.

The official 2026 programme is selling attraction tickets now. A short market visit can fit into a wider Edinburgh break; you do not need to build an expensive weekend around doing every ride. Decide what would make the visit worthwhile for your group, then price the journey and accommodation around it.

When is Edinburgh Christmas market open?

The market's own listing gives normal hours of 10:00-22:00, with these exceptions:

DatePublished market hours
November 17, 202616:00-22:00
December 2410:00-20:00
December 25Closed
December 2612:00-20:00
December 3110:00-17:00
January 1, 202712:00-20:00
January 310:00-18:00

These are market hours, not a timetable for every attraction. The organizer says times can change, so check again close to departure. In particular, a Christmas Eve afternoon visit needs a different plan from an ordinary December evening.

If you are staying over Christmas Day, arrange that day separately. The market's closure does not establish which restaurants, museums or transport services will run. Check the actual businesses you intend to use and book meals where necessary.

Which parts need a ticket?

The organizer's FAQ confirms free entry to East and West Princes Street Gardens. Food, drinks and attractions are separate purchases, and the sites are cashless. Carry a working payment card as well as a charged phone.

Use the official attraction pages to choose tickets. A market visit does not require buying a ride, and a ticket for one attraction is not a general festival pass. The FAQ says tickets bought through third-party sites are not valid.

Build your budget in this order: travel, accommodation if needed, one priority activity, then food and optional extras. Compare the final checkout amount for your group rather than multiplying an advertised starting price and assuming it covers every age category.

For a low-cost visit, browse first and choose one thing to buy. If the stalls are too crowded to enjoy, leave time for another part of the city instead of waiting simply because you traveled a long way.

The Big Wheel: a date reservation, not a queue shortcut

The LNER Big Wheel page lists tickets from GBP 12. They permit one ride on the selected date, with boarding first come, first served. The time printed on the ticket can indicate opening time; it is not a reserved boarding slot.

The normal closing time is 22:00, with last admission at 21:30. Check the ride's separate exceptions: on November 17 it opens at 17:00, an hour after the market. On January 3 the wheel is listed until 20:00, later than the market.

Family tickets cover four people with no more than two adults. Pods may be shared at busy times. Children aged 13 and under need an adult ticket holder with them; manual wheelchairs can be accommodated, according to the operator.

Leave a buffer before a restaurant booking or train. Prepaying removes the purchase step, not the time needed to reach the entrance and board.

Santa's Stories: count every child in the booking

Santa's Stories runs November 20-December 24 in West Princes Street Gardens, with prices from GBP 14.30 and performances lasting about 20 minutes.

Each child needs a Child + Included Adult ticket, including babies. One adult may accompany up to four children, so three children and two adults need three child tickets, not an invented extra adult to match every ticket. Additional adults beyond the included allowance must be booked separately.

Arrive ten minutes before the chosen session. These are fixed-time performances, and the operator does not allow transfers to another time. There is no room for prams inside; the outside buggy area is not guaranteed covered.

Relaxed and BSL-interpreted performances are listed on the booking page. Select the specific session you need before paying, rather than assuming an ordinary performance has the same adjustments.

George Street's family ice experience is not skating

The organizer's October 2 announcement introduces the 2026 Viking-themed ice sculptures and expanded family sessions. The nearby Coorie Inn is free to enter. That gives groups an alternative to buying another attraction ticket, though food and drink remain purchases.

The Family Ice Experience is listed for November 21-January 3, outside 115 George Street, with prices from GBP 12. It is a visit to ice sculptures, not an ice-skating session.

The cold section is described as minus 8 to minus 10 degrees Celsius. Bring proper clothing for children: the detailed guidance says extra children's jackets are not provided. There are no buggies inside and no buggy park. Children under 18 months can enter without a ticket only if carried.

The dedicated family sessions differ from the adults-only Polar Ice Bar. The 20% EH resident discount does not apply to the family experience. Its page has conflicting duration labels, so confirm the booked session length at checkout if a tightly timed plan depends on it.

A manageable Edinburgh Christmas visit

For a day trip, choose one booked activity and keep the rest flexible. Start with enough time to find the right entrance, browse the market, then stop for a proper meal before the return journey. Avoid placing a non-transferable Santa session immediately after a ride with first-come boarding.

For an overnight break, separate the market from the rest of the trip. Use daylight for a neighborhood walk or a pre-booked attraction, then visit the stalls when it suits your group. A second day gives you room to change plans if wind affects outdoor activities.

A weekday daytime visit may be a sensible choice for someone avoiding the busiest evenings, but there is no guaranteed quiet hour. If noise or crowding is difficult, agree where to leave and meet before entering. A short visit that everyone enjoys is preferable to buying more tickets to fill the day.

Our United Kingdom with kids guide covers broader family trip planning. Keep this event's tickets and hours separate from summer Edinburgh festival advice or a New Year's Eve celebration booking.

Getting there: Waverley, tram stops and the trip home

The event travel page identifies Edinburgh Waverley as the nearest railway station, with the Waverley Bridge exit providing a step-free route toward East Princes Street Gardens. It also names St Andrew Square, Princes Street and West End tram stops for the city-centre sites.

Check the location on each ticket. George Street and West Princes Street Gardens are not the same entrance as the main market. Allow more time than a map's shortest walking estimate if your group includes a stroller, luggage or someone who needs a gentler route.

There is no designated event parking. If driving, compare an appropriate park-and-ride connection with central parking, including the final return service. A car park outside the centre only helps if the connection still runs when you want to leave.

Edinburgh Trams' current FAQ explains tap-on and tap-off payment. Use the same card or device for both ends of a journey and throughout the day if relying on its fare cap. A physical card and its phone-wallet version are treated separately. The contactless system is for individual adult fares; families should compare the relevant family ticket rather than assuming one bank-card tap pays for everyone.

Holiday services need their own check. Do not assume a normal weekday timetable applies on December 25, December 26 or January 1. Leave the market with time to reach the correct platform, not merely the station entrance.

Accessibility, weather and useful phone preparation

The event access page describes temporary ramps, some steeper than 1:12. West Gardens has steep and sometimes cobbled approaches from Princes Street. Ask staff for the appropriate entrance instead of following the shortest route blindly.

Ride suitability is assessed individually. Essential companion tickets can be arranged through the box office, and sensory backpacks are listed at the East Gardens information point. Confirm what is available for your visit before relying on it. A generally accessible site does not mean every ride suits every wheelchair or mobility need.

The organizer's FAQ advises waterproof clothing and says weather-related opening changes will be announced through its channels, with prebooked customers contacted directly. Rain alone is not proof of cancellation, while a ticket does not guarantee that a ride will operate in dangerous wind.

Install the official Bus & Tram app for journey planning, ticket options, live vehicle information and service alerts. Save the hotel address and walking map offline. Keep attraction confirmations accessible, but follow the transport app's own activation rules rather than assuming a screenshot is a valid bus or tram ticket.

For visitors facing extra roaming charges, OpenSim's UK plans give a separate allowance for checking sessions, transport and messages between sites. The public catalog checked October 17 lists a fixed 5GB, 30-day plan at USD 4.76, with top-up support. Confirm the current checkout total.

That can be useful without searching for Wi-Fi every time plans change. If your home plan already includes enough UK data, another plan may be unnecessary. Mobile data does not reserve a ride, guarantee reception or replace a payment method.

Check the travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide before departure. Pack a power bank if your phone will hold both tickets and the journey home.

Sources and updates

Checked October 17, 2026, using the organizer's 2026 attraction listings, access and travel guidance, Lothian Buses and Edinburgh Trams. Recheck the linked pages for opening-hour, availability, weather and transport changes before traveling. Future editions need a fresh programme check, not a new year pasted onto these details.
