Ekka 2026 guide: tickets, trains and Fun Pass

Ekka 2026 runs from Saturday, August 8 through Sunday, August 16 at Brisbane Showgrounds. Gates open at 9am and close at 9pm, although several animal areas and pavilions close earlier. The simplest plan is to buy entry online, take a 50-cent Translink service to Exhibition Station, decide the ride and showbag budget before arrival, and leave the final part of the day for EkkaNITES.

The difficult part is not finding things to do. It is fitting animals, rides, food, pavilions and the night show into one day without spending the afternoon in queues or discovering that Fun Pass credit is separate from admission. This guide uses the current 2026 ticket, transport, app and facility information checked on August 3.

Ekka 2026 at a glance

Buy the entry ticket before choosing rides

Ekka sells 2026 entry tickets online only. They are not sold at Exhibition Station or at the entrance. The current standard prices are listed below, but reopen the official ticket page before paying because availability and offers can change.

Super Saver tickets receive a 20 percent reduction for Monday, August 10; Tuesday, August 11; Thursday, August 13; and Friday, August 14. The Wednesday public holiday and weekends are likely to put more pressure on transport and nearby parking. A lower-price weekday is the sensible first choice if your dates are flexible.

Ticket holders could change their selected day once until 11:59pm on Wednesday, August 5 under the current 2026 terms. Check the order now rather than at the gate.

Entry and Fun Pass are separate

The entry ticket covers admission and the activities included with it. It does not include carnival rides or games. Those use Fun Pass credits, which can sit in the Ekka Fun Pass app or on a physical card.

Current advance packages are:

Ride operators set their own credit amounts, so a credit is not the same as one ride. Check the cost at the attraction before scanning. One account can manage up to five physical cards, and family members can use the same Fun Pass balance. Set a household limit before entering Sideshow Alley; current Brisbane discussions repeatedly describe rides and showbags as the point where a reasonable day becomes an expensive one.

Unused credits can be submitted for refund through the app from 9am on August 17 until 11:59pm on August 30. Ekka lists a $2.50 processing fee, and credits do not carry into a future show. A physical card that was never connected to the app cannot use the app refund process.

Two-for-one ride sessions are scheduled from 9:30am to 10:30am each show day. If rides matter, this is a strong reason to arrive when gates open. Confirm the offer in the app on the day.

A realistic one-day Ekka plan

This route gives the early hours to animals and rides, uses indoor areas during the middle of the day, and keeps enough energy for the night program. It is a framework, not a promise that every queue will cooperate.

9am: enter, set a meeting point and check the app

Have the mobile ticket open before reaching security. Ekka may inspect bags and containers, so pack neatly and avoid bringing anything you have not checked against the current entry terms.

Families can collect a free child-identification wristband from the police marquee on Gregory Terrace and add a contact number. Choose a staffed meeting point as soon as everyone is inside. A phone call is useful only when both people can hear and the network is moving.

Open the MyEkka map and compare the day's live program with the PDF map saved on the phone. Pick three priorities. The show is too large for a complete sweep in one day.

9:30am: use the ride offer or go straight to animals

Use the two-for-one window if rides are part of the budget. Families skipping rides can go to the Animal Nursery, the Large Animal Pavilion or another named animal activity before the busiest part of the day.

The Animal Nursery currently closes at 5:30pm and the Large Animal Pavilion at 6pm, well before the gates. Do not postpone every animal stop until after dinner.

Late morning: choose one agricultural anchor

Ekka is the Royal Queensland Show, not only a carnival. Choose one part of the program that brings regional Queensland into the city: a livestock competition, woodchop session, agricultural education activity or produce display. The official app has the current times.

Woodchop Arena is currently listed to close at 5pm. Other pavilions close between 5:30pm and 6pm, so a morning or early-afternoon visit protects the plan from an early door.

Midday: eat, refill water and use indoor pavilions

Visitors may bring a picnic lunch. Free water refill stations are available around the grounds. Carrying lunch for at least one meal leaves more of the budget for the specific Ekka food or ride the group actually wants.

Arts and Cookery, the John Reid Pavilion and several other indoor areas are useful when the weather turns or younger visitors need a slower hour. Indoor does not mean empty, especially during rain. Use the live map to find the nearest option instead of crossing the whole site.

Afternoon: showbags, one missed priority and a break

Browse the showbag guide before arrival and agree on a limit. More than 350 bags are listed for 2026. Choosing from the app at home is easier than trying to compare every bag in a crowded pavilion.

Locker facilities are listed under the John MacDonald Stand, with self-service lockers near the Showbag Pavilion. The facilities page also lists bulky-item storage and pull-stroller hire. Some hire details are marked subject to 2026 changes, so verify availability before depending on them.

Use the afternoon for one priority that did not fit in the morning, then take a proper break. Stockmen's Rest, the parents rooms and other quieter areas listed on the accessibility page can help when the show becomes too loud or crowded.

Evening: eat early and check the night-show time

EkkaNITES is included with general admission. Check its start time and access details in the current app, then reach the chosen viewing area before the show begins. Some families on local forums leave just before the final crowd, but that tradeoff may mean missing part of the program. Decide before everyone is tired.

The showbag pavilion, Kids Carnival and Sideshow Alley are listed as open late, while most agricultural areas have already closed. Do not treat 9pm as a universal closing time for every part of Ekka.

How to get to Ekka 2026

Ekka loop trains

Exhibition Station will open throughout Ekka and sits inside the showgrounds. Loop trains call at Roma Street, Central, Fortitude Valley and Exhibition. Translink expects a service about every 20 minutes or better, with different first and last times by day.

The current Translink Ekka page lists 50-cent fares. The network is cashless, so use a go card, contactless payment or a valid pre-purchased ticket. Every traveler should touch on with their own accepted payment method.

Exhibition Station has lifts, raised platforms, tactiles and hearing augmentation loops. Translink calls it the best arrival option for passengers who need assistance.

Regular buses

Numerous regular bus routes stop at Herston station near the showgrounds. Use the Translink journey planner on the morning of travel because the best bus depends on the starting suburb and public-holiday service levels can differ.

From Brisbane Airport

Brisbane Airtrain reaches city stations including Fortitude Valley, Central and Roma Street, where a visitor can change to the Ekka loop. Airtrain says the city journey takes about 20 minutes, with services every 15 minutes during peak periods and every 30 minutes off-peak.

The airport rail leg has its own fare. Do not assume the entire airport-to-Ekka journey costs 50 cents. Check the Airtrain ticket and service-change pages within seven days of travel, especially for an early flight home.

Driving and parking

Parking near the showgrounds is limited and can fill on weekends and the public holiday. Brisbane City Council has temporary road and parking changes around Gregory Terrace, King Street, Alexandria Street, Exhibition Street and O'Connell Terrace during the event period. These controls begin before opening day and continue after the final Sunday.

If driving is unavoidable, reserve a legitimate car park and route to its actual entrance. Do not set the navigation destination only to Brisbane Showgrounds and expect street parking to appear.

Use the three digital tools for different jobs

Install and sign in before leaving reliable WiFi. Ekka lists public WiFi in four areas, but those zones do not cover every queue, pavilion or platform. A secure charging station is listed near the lockers under the John MacDonald Stand. The current facilities page lists four parents rooms, ramps and elevators, wheelchair viewing areas, a Changing Places bathroom at Exhibition Station, mobility equipment hire and assistance-dog rules. Hire times, prices and some first-aid details on that page are marked subject to 2026 changes. Contact the organizer before travel if a pram, wheelchair, scooter, viewing position or other accommodation is essential.

A pram can solve the long-day problem but becomes harder to move through dense evening crowds. Local family discussions suggest choosing the night-show position with the exit route in mind. Do not leave a child or valuables with an unattended pram.

If a child becomes separated, the dedicated Lost Persons station is at the Gregory Terrace Police Station. Collect the free contact wristband on arrival instead of waiting until someone is missing.

Rain, crowds and the last day

The show runs in Brisbane winter, and a long day can move between sun, cool wind and rain. Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast and the Ekka app that morning. Bring layers that fit in one practical bag, sun protection and comfortable closed shoes.

Rain shifts more visitors into the indoor pavilions. It does not automatically create a quiet day. If the forecast is poor, decide which outdoor activity matters most and do it during the best window rather than saving everything for night.

The final Sunday can suit travelers who have no other option, but individual competitions, animals or stock may not remain in exactly the same place all week. Check the official daily program rather than relying on a previous visitor's final-day report.

Mobile data at Brisbane Showgrounds

An Australia Roaming eSIM plan can keep the MyEkka app, Translink, maps and family messages online after the phone connects to a supported Australian network. It cannot guarantee fast data in a crowd of thousands. Save the ticket, map and return route anyway.

The useful order is simple: admission first, transport second, ride budget third. Then choose three things the group actually wants to see and leave enough time to enjoy them.
