Hawaiian Airlines plans to start nonstop flights between Seattle and Papeete, Tahiti, on June 11, 2027. The year-round route is scheduled three times a week and is on sale, but it remains subject to government approval.

The branding needs a little unpacking. A Hawaiian-branded Airbus A330-200 is due to operate the service, while the timetable uses Alaska flight numbers AS987 and AS988. That is the result of the airlines' combined network, not a change of aircraft in Honolulu.

*Original AI-generated OpenSim editorial illustration. The unbranded aircraft and landscapes are conceptual and do not show an actual Hawaiian flight or confirm that the route is operating.*

The practical answer: June 11 is the planned first Seattle departure, not an already completed launch. Read the date and operating carrier on the itinerary, leave a sensible margin for a separate Air Tahiti connection at Papeete, and compare both airlines' baggage rules before paying.

What Hawaiian and Alaska have announced

The airlines' October 20 announcement describes a year-round Seattle-Tahiti route beginning June 11, 2027, subject to government approval. It is planned as the only nonstop between the two cities when it launches.

Hawaiian is due to operate the flight with an Airbus A330-200. The published plan includes lie-flat seats in the premium cabin and free Starlink Wi-Fi for Atmos Rewards members through T-Mobile. Hawaiian's newly redesigned A330 interiors are not due to begin arriving until 2028, so travelers should not assume the launch aircraft will have those later cabins.

Tickets are already being sold. Availability on a sales page is useful, but it does not prove regulatory approval or first operation. Recheck the booking if the route, aircraft or start date is central to the trip.

Seattle-Papeete schedule and overnight timing

The announcement gives this schedule:

FlightRouteLocal departureLocal arrivalPublished days
AS987Seattle SEA to Papeete PPT11:55 p.m.7:20 a.m. next dayWednesday, Friday and Saturday
AS988Papeete PPT to Seattle SEA5:00 p.m.6:00 a.m. next dayThursday, Saturday and Sunday

Both directions cross a calendar boundary. A Friday-night departure from Seattle, for example, reaches Tahiti on Saturday morning. Hotel, ferry and domestic-flight bookings should use the arrival date shown on the final itinerary, not the departure date.

Airlines can adjust a timetable months before launch. Confirm the local time, day and terminal again before arranging a non-refundable connection.

Who operates the flight?

The simplest description is: Hawaiian-operated aircraft, Alaska flight numbers. The A330-200 and onboard product are Hawaiian, while the published flights are AS987 and AS988.

The ticket should identify the operating carrier. Use that line when checking the cabin, baggage allowance, check-in location and day-of-travel notices. Do not assume that an AS flight number means an Alaska-liveried 737, or that the Hawaiian branding means the journey connects through Honolulu.

Seattle is the only stop before Papeete on the announced flight. Hawaiian's existing Honolulu-Papeete service is a separate route.

Connecting from Papeete to Bora Bora or Moorea

Alaska and Hawaiian say the schedule offers same-day connections to Bora Bora and Moorea. That is possible in principle, but the international flight does not take passengers straight to either island.

All international arrivals enter French Polynesia at Papeete. Air Tahiti's arrival guide says passengers continuing to another island collect their baggage, clear the arrival process and check in for the domestic flight. Air Tahiti Nui's Papeete airport guide recommends allowing at least 90 minutes between an international arrival and an inter-island departure.

Treat 90 minutes as a published minimum, not a guarantee. Immigration queues, baggage delivery and a late inbound flight can consume that margin. A connection sold together may offer more protection than two independent tickets, but travelers still need to read the issuer's terms and ask who will rebook the domestic sector after a delay.

Moorea can also be reached by ferry from Tahiti. That is a different journey from a same-day flight, so compare the ferry port transfer, departure time and baggage arrangements before choosing.

Baggage rules change on an inter-island ticket

The A330 allowance depends on the international fare and loyalty status. Air Tahiti sets its own limits for domestic flights, and they may be lower. This matters for anyone packing to the long-haul allowance and then continuing to a smaller island aircraft.

Before purchase, compare:

  • the cabin and checked-bag allowance on the issued Seattle-Papeete fare;
  • Air Tahiti's allowance for the exact domestic fare;
  • fees and space limits for excess, sports or oversized baggage;
  • whether the tickets are linked and whether a bag can be tagged beyond Papeete.

Even if a bag tag shows the final island, international arrivals should follow the airport's current instructions and be ready to collect and present the bag during the transfer. Keep essential medicine, documents and one change of clothes in a compliant cabin bag.

Fares, seats and changes deserve a second look

The launch announcement advertised a limited round-trip Main Cabin fare, but that promotion expires and inventory can disappear. Compare the live total rather than planning around an announcement price.

Alaska's current Saver fare rules are more restrictive than Main Cabin rules. Saver seat assignments may not be provided until check-in, parties are not guaranteed to sit together, and voluntary changes or credits depend on the applicable conditions. The branded fare and rules displayed during checkout control.

Three flights a week give fewer recovery options than a daily route. If a cruise, resort transfer or separate island flight cannot move, consider a longer buffer in Tahiti and a fare or insurance policy that covers the actual risk. Wait for the airline to state its options before voluntarily cancelling a disrupted booking.

Documents and departure preparation

French Polynesia has its own entry conditions. Nationality, passport validity, trip length and onward-travel evidence can change the answer. Use the official France-Visas wizard, select the correct territory and verify the result with the airline before departure.

Alaska and Hawaiian's international travel guidance recommends checking documents in the app when offered, checking in 24 hours before departure and bringing the original travel documents to the airport. An app approval is not a replacement for a passport or permission required at the border.

Leave time for international check-in at Seattle and for the formalities printed on the itinerary. Airport counter and gate cutoffs can differ from a domestic Alaska trip.

Mobile data in Tahiti and nearby islands

OpenSim's live catalog had a French Polynesia eSIM and an Oceania Orange regional eSIM when this guide was reviewed. The country plan is the direct comparison for Tahiti and the outer islands. The regional option can be useful only if its current country list matches the wider itinerary.

Compare allowance, validity, listed networks and top-up support before buying. Not every package is reloadable. Install the eSIM over reliable Wi-Fi, then save the itinerary, accommodation address and island-transfer details offline.

An eSIM supplies mobile data on supported ground networks. It does not include inflight Wi-Fi, speed up immigration, protect a connection or extend an app's local service area.

Ten questions about Hawaiian Seattle-Papeete flights

When do Seattle-Papeete flights start?

The first Seattle departure is planned for June 11, 2027. The route is announced and on sale, but it has not started and remains subject to government approval.

Which days will AS987 and AS988 operate?

AS987 is published from Seattle on Wednesday, Friday and Saturday. AS988 is published from Papeete on Thursday, Saturday and Sunday. Recheck the final itinerary because a pre-launch schedule can change.

Is the Seattle-Tahiti route operating now?

No. It is a future route. A ticket for June 2027 or later is not evidence that the first flight has operated.

Is Hawaiian or Alaska operating the flight?

Hawaiian is due to operate a Hawaiian-branded A330-200, while the flights use Alaska numbers AS987 and AS988. The operating-carrier line on the ticket is the best day-of-travel reference.

Does AS987 arrive in Tahiti the next day?

Yes. The published 11:55 p.m. Seattle departure arrives at 7:20 a.m. on the following calendar day. Match the hotel and onward booking to that arrival date.

Can I connect to Bora Bora or Moorea on the same day?

The airlines say the timetable supports same-day connections. Confirm that the actual domestic departure leaves enough time at Papeete and check what protection applies if the international flight is late.

Do I collect my bag at Papeete?

Air Tahiti tells international arrivals continuing within French Polynesia to collect baggage and check in for the domestic flight. Follow the instructions given at Papeete even if the trip was sold together.

Which baggage allowance applies after Papeete?

The domestic airline's rules apply to the inter-island sector. Compare them with the international allowance before packing, especially for diving equipment, surfboards or a long resort stay.

Are the cheapest fares flexible?

Do not assume so. Alaska Saver rules restrict seats and voluntary changes more than Main Cabin rules. Read the branded fare, cancellation terms and seating details shown for the exact itinerary.

What if a three-weekly flight disrupts my connection?

Contact the ticket issuer and wait for the airline's options before cancelling. A same-ticket connection may be handled differently from a separate booking. Keep a buffer for a cruise, resort boat or island flight that cannot easily move.

A booking checklist

  • Confirm that June 11 and the government-approval caveat are still current.
  • Check SEA, PPT, AS987 or AS988, and the operating carrier on the itinerary.
  • Match lodging and domestic transport to the next-day arrival date.
  • Verify entry and transit documents for each traveler.
  • Compare international and inter-island baggage rules.
  • Leave a realistic transfer margin at Papeete.
  • Ask who protects and rebooks a domestic connection.
  • Read the exact fare's seat, change and refund terms.
  • Add a buffer before a cruise or fixed resort transfer.
  • Save documents and contact details offline.

Hawaiian Seattle-Papeete source record

Alaska and Hawaiian's October 20 announcement supports the route trigger, planned June 11 start, year-round three-weekly timetable, government-approval caveat, flight numbers, aircraft and same-day connection claim. Official Alaska fare and international-travel pages support the booking and document boundaries. Air Tahiti and Air Tahiti Nui support the Papeete transfer process and published connection guidance.

Public discussions were used only to identify traveler questions about route history, through tickets, low-frequency disruption, baggage and island connections. They were not used to prove schedules or airline policy.

Review this guide when approvals are confirmed, the first round trip operates, either airline changes the timetable or aircraft, the Papeete transfer process changes, or fare and baggage rules materially change.
