The difficult part for spectators is not finding the start. It is planning a day around closures that spread across Pembrokeshire and continue long after the swim. The A478 from Twycross Roundabout into Tenby closes at 10:30 a.m. and does not reopen until 1 a.m. Monday. North Beach Car Park has no exit from 11:30 a.m. until 1 a.m. The safer car plan is usually the paid shuttle from free parking at Carew Airfield, unless you are prepared to leave the car in one place all day.

The practical plan: watch the swim at North Beach, remain in Tenby for the bike departures and run laps, and use the official tracker instead of trying to drive between course towns. If you want Saundersfoot as a second viewing point, use the organizer's spectator shuttle and accept that its timetable can move with traffic.

What happens on race weekend?

Friday and Saturday matter to anyone accompanying an athlete. The official event schedule lists registration and the expo from 8 a.m. Friday. Registration continues from 8 a.m. to 1 p.m. Saturday, while bike and bag check-in runs from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. at Seafront Car Park.

On Sunday, transition opens from 5:30 to 7 a.m. The swim assembly begins at 7 a.m. on North Beach, followed by the three starts from 7:20 a.m. Bag and bike checkout is scheduled from 6:45 p.m. to 1 a.m. The finish-line party runs from 10 p.m. to 12:50 a.m., so central Tenby remains busy well into Monday morning.

Do not use a previous year's timetable as the final authority. The organizer marks the 2026 schedule as subject to change and says the race briefing will be available during race week.

Where should spectators watch IRONMAN Wales?

North Beach for the swim start

North Beach is the place to see the professional and age-group starts, but it demands the earliest arrival. The assembly begins at 7 a.m., and the paths around the beach become crowded. Choose a position before the first start rather than trying to move along the waterfront while athletes and spectators are converging.

The swim exit is followed by a roughly one-kilometre run toward transition at Seafront Car Park. Keep clear of the athletes' route. A person watching both the beach and the early bike departure should stay in Tenby instead of returning to a car.

The Green for repeated bike views

The Green is the Carew shuttle stop and sits close to the route through Tenby. It can work as a base because spectators can see athletes leave for the bike course, pass on a later loop and return toward transition. It also becomes busy and still carries controlled vehicle movement, so do not stand in the road or treat the shuttle stop as an unrestricted reunion point.

Saundersfoot for a bike-course atmosphere

Saundersfoot is a popular place to see the bike course outside central Tenby. The organizer plans a spectator shuttle between Tenby and Saundersfoot from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with a normal journey estimate of 30 to 40 minutes. Race traffic can alter that schedule.

This is not a good same-day driving experiment. Roads around Summerhill, Wisemans Bridge, Amroth, Saundersfoot and New Hedges close in stages, and the A478 return into Tenby closes at 10:30 a.m. Use the shuttle or commit to remaining in the chosen area.

Tenby town centre for the run and finish

The run returns repeatedly through Tenby before finishing on the Esplanade. This is the simplest option for a spectator who wants several sightings without a long transfer. It also keeps you near the late finish activity and the athlete's bike and bag collection.

Agree on a reunion point away from the finish chute before the race. A live tracker can estimate progress, but it cannot guarantee that a message will arrive immediately in a dense crowd.

Should spectators use the Carew park and ride?

For most visitors driving from outside Tenby, yes. The organizer's race-week travel information says parking at Carew Airfield is free and the spectator shuttle is paid. The airfield remains accessible from the A477, which is outside the event closures listed by the organizer.

The current Sunday plan runs between Carew Airfield and The Green in Tenby from 5 a.m. until 1 a.m. Monday. The scheduled journey takes 20 to 30 minutes, but departures can change during peak traffic. Early buses give priority to athletes.

Use the shuttle if you:

1. Need to arrive before the 7:20 a.m. professional start.
2. Want to leave without waiting for a central car park to reopen.
3. Are staying outside Tenby or Saundersfoot.
4. Plan to watch in Tenby for most of the day.

Save the Carew Airfield location and The Green pickup point before leaving Wi-Fi. Confirm the current ticket method on the organizer's page rather than relying on a price from an older spectator guide.

Which Tenby car parks can trap a car?

The 2026 road-access leaflets and current race-week page do not make every central car park interchangeable.

North Beach Car Park only makes sense if the vehicle can remain there until 1 a.m. Monday. It is not an early-exit option. The multi-storey, Salterns and The Green are affected during the early race window. South Beach avoids the same published lock-in, but reaching it still depends on the live one-way system and available capacity.

There is no parking beside Five Arches or Seafront Car Park. The organizer warns that vehicles left on the course can be moved. Check the live closure map before entering town, and never use a parked car as the only place holding medication, travel documents or the athlete's essential post-race items.

IRONMAN Wales road closures by area

The course uses full and partial closures across Tenby, Penally, Lydstep, Lamphey, St Petrox, Castlemartin, Angle, Pembroke, Redberth, Sageston, Carew, Templeton, Narberth, Amroth, Saundersfoot and New Hedges. These closures apply to vehicles, bicycles and horses not involved in the event. Pedestrians may cross when it is safe and traffic staff allow it.

South Pembrokeshire morning closures

• The A4139 westbound between Lamphey and Tenby closes from 7:30 a.m. to 4:15 p.m. Eastbound travel toward Tenby remains under the organizer's one-way plan.
• Upper Lamphey Road, Well Hill and St Daniel's Hill are affected from 8 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• Roads through St Petrox and Merrion close from 8 a.m. to noon.
• The Castlemartin and Angle section closes from 8:45 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
• Pembroke Main Street is affected from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m.
• Redberth and Sageston roads are affected from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m.

The organizer provides managed crossing points at selected junctions, but a crossing is not a guaranteed quick passage. Build in waiting time and follow marshals rather than a navigation app that sees only the normal road network.

Carew, Narberth and Saundersfoot closures

• The Carew, Cresselly and Templeton section closes from 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.
• The A478 between Templeton and Narberth closes from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m.
• Roads through Princes Gate, Summerhill and Wisemans Bridge close from 10 a.m. to 6:45 p.m.
• The Saundersfoot to New Hedges section closes from 10 a.m. to 7 p.m.
• New Hedges has no access from 10:30 a.m. to 7 p.m.

The A477, A40 and A4076 remain outside the organizer's race closures and form the main detour spine. That does not mean traffic will be normal. Expect extra vehicles at the points where local roads meet those routes.

The A478 Tenby lockout

The most consequential closure is the A478 from Twycross Roundabout into Tenby. It closes at 10:30 a.m. Sunday and remains closed until 1 a.m. Monday. The B4316 in New Hedges also closes for the run course.

The official traffic-impact page carries the current maps and live closure link. Anyone who needs essential access should contact the organizer before the weekend. The event email is not monitored during race weekend, so do not leave an access request until Sunday.

Can you take the train to Tenby?

Tenby railway station is about a ten-minute walk from the race village according to Transport for Wales. Rail avoids the parking decision, but it does not guarantee a connection that reaches North Beach before the 7:20 a.m. start.

Check the live journey planner for your departure station, engineering work and the final return service. A visitor arriving later can still watch the bike and run sections in town. Someone committed to the swim start may need accommodation within walking distance or the first Carew shuttle instead.

If you carry an athlete's bicycle, do not assume every train accepts it without reservation. Check the operator's cycle policy for each service. Spectators with buggies, wheelchairs or heavy luggage should also compare the station route with the Carew shuttle and the town's steep or crowded sections.

How to move between Tenby and Saundersfoot

The organizer's spectator shuttle is the practical connection. It is scheduled from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m., with 30 to 40 minutes allowed for each trip. The bus uses designated stops and can be delayed by race traffic.

Do not attempt to follow one athlete by car around the bike loop. Closures make the route slow or impossible, and parked vehicles can obstruct the course. A realistic two-zone plan is:

1. Watch the North Beach start.
2. Move to The Green after the swim.
3. Take the spectator shuttle to Saundersfoot only if you can accept a delayed return.
4. Return to Tenby before the shuttle window closes.
5. Choose one written meeting point for after the finish.

Families or groups with limited walking tolerance may get more from staying in Tenby. The run laps create repeated viewing opportunities without a transfer.

How to track an athlete at IRONMAN Wales

The official spectator page links the IRONMAN Athlete Tracker app and live web tracker. Search for the athlete before the start, enable the relevant notifications and save the bib number separately.

Tracker positions are estimates based on the most recent timing read. Times displayed during the race are unofficial. A missing dot does not prove that an athlete has stopped, and an estimated arrival can shift between timing points.

Use the tracker to decide when to watch a section, not as the only reunion method. Write down:

• the athlete's name and bib number;
• one primary meeting point;
• one backup meeting point;
• who carries the athlete's phone and keys;
• whether the spectator will leave Tenby for Saundersfoot;
• the latest time the group will wait before using the backup plan.

Weather, clothing and race-day safety

Tenby's coastal weather can change during a long race day. Check the Met Office forecast close to departure and pack for the actual hourly conditions. A waterproof layer, shoes with grip, sun protection and a warm layer are more useful than dressing only for the temperature at the 7 a.m. swim assembly.

Keep clear of the cycle route and listen to marshals at crossing points. Do not step over the centre line for a photograph. Pedestrian crossing is permitted when safe, but athletes and event vehicles have priority on the closed course.

Carry water and food for the gaps between town-centre options, especially if you travel to a more remote viewing point. Use public toilets before joining a dense viewing area, and do not assume a cafe table will remain available all day.

The presence of disabled parking does not prove that the full route from a car park to a viewing point is step-free. North Beach, steep streets, dense barriers and temporary crowd routes can change the practical journey. Ask the organizer about the specific viewing point, shuttle boarding and accessible toilet location rather than relying on a general venue description.

Mobile data helps with the tracker, live closure map, train changes and group messages. It cannot guarantee capacity beside North Beach or the finish line, so keep the schedule, route and reunion plan available offline.
