Which flights are protected during an Italy aviation strike?
ENAC identifies two protected flight periods: 07:00 to 10:00 and 18:00 to 21:00. It also publishes lists of indispensable flights for specific strike dates. These rules protect minimum services, not a normal operating day.
Use the scheduled departure time printed on the ticket, not a later estimated departure, when checking the time band. Then search ENAC's date-specific list by flight number. A protected flight may operate late, and an evening service may wait for an aircraft or crew delayed earlier in the day.
Do not assume an arrival at 14:00 is automatically cancelled. The strike notices do not provide a passenger-facing rule that decides every arrival by clock time. The airline's operational plan and the flight's inclusion in any guaranteed list are more useful than guessing from the landing time.
Are Linate, Naples, Bologna and Bari closed?
No official source reviewed for this guide says those airports will close. ENAV names local actions at all four airports, while Naples Airport warns passengers that delays or cancellations may occur and directs them to their airline, travel agent or tour operator.
The national ENAV action means travelers using Rome Fiumicino, Rome Ciampino, Milan Malpensa, Venice and other Italian airports should also check their flights. The four named airports deserve an additional airport-status check, but they are not the only places where an airline schedule could change.
Use this order:
- Open the booking in the operating airline's app or website.
- Check the airline's direct email, text or app notification.
- Check the departure airport's live board.
- Check the arrival airport when a connection or baggage delivery matters.
- Search ENAC's guaranteed-flight list by flight number.
- Contact the airline if those sources disagree or the trip has an unprotected connection.
An itinerary sold by one airline may be operated by another. Use the operating carrier's flight number when checking live status.
Should you change the flight before the strike?
Do not cancel a valid booking merely because the flight overlaps 13:00 to 17:00. A voluntary cancellation can give up rights that apply when the airline cancels.

Could rail replace the flight?
Rail can be a practical substitute between mainland cities such as Milan, Bologna, Florence, Rome and Naples. It is not automatically the best answer for islands, late-night arrivals, heavy luggage or a trip that starts outside Italy.
Before accepting a refund and buying a train, compare:
- the airport-to-station journey;
- the train's actual availability and final arrival time;
- whether the airline is offering rerouting instead;
- accommodation or event bookings at risk; and
- baggage you can manage through stations and transfers.
Use Trenitalia or the relevant train operator for the live timetable. Do not rely on a route shown in a general map app without checking that the service is bookable.

- airport terminal and transfer details;

- one realistic backup route; and
- travel-insurance claim instructions.
Keep essential medication, chargers and one change of clothes in cabin baggage within the airline's size and liquid rules. Checked baggage can complicate rerouting, but cabin baggage does not remove delay or cancellation risk.
Follow the airline's stated airport arrival time unless it publishes different instructions. Arriving six hours early does not help if check-in or bag drop is not open.
