Italy airport strikes September 13: flights and security

Several aviation strikes are listed in Italy for Sunday, September 13, 2026. They include a national easyJet flying-crew action, security and handling staff at Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino, ground services at Pisa and Florence, and separate airport-company actions in Sardinia.

The short answer: Do not cancel a valid flight yourself. Check the exact flight with the airline, then check the departure and arrival airports because a flight can operate while security, baggage or ground handling runs more slowly. Rome and Sardinia need the most careful airport-level check. Travelers on easyJet also need an airline-level check even when neither airport is named in a local action.

Which strikes are listed for September 13?

The ministry register currently shows several separate actions on the same date. They should not be compressed into one claim that every Italian airport will close.

The Toscana listing also records an overtime stoppage from September 13 to October 12. The Cagliari listing records an overtime and supplementary-work stoppage from September 8 to 30. Those longer actions do not mean the airports are closed throughout those periods. They can, however, reduce recovery capacity when operations are already delayed.

The protected flight hours need a careful reading

You will see 07:00 to 10:00 and 18:00 to 21:00 described as Italy's protected flight windows. ENAC says flights scheduled to depart in those windows must operate during crew and certain aviation strikes. It also publishes lists of indispensable flights when a confirmed action requires one.

That does not turn every part of an airport into a normal service.

ENAC's minimum-service rules distinguish among airline crews, airport passenger and baggage flow, and security services. Airport-flow services must support regular flights in the two protected windows and maintain at least 20 percent functionality outside them. Access-control security has a separate minimum of 50 percent normal functionality, with a single access point kept operating where only one exists.

For September 13, the practical result is simple:

• an easyJet departure scheduled inside a protected window has stronger operating protection than one outside it;
• a protected flight can still face a slow queue, late gate change or baggage delay;
• a Rome security strike is not answered by the flight time alone; and
• only the airline can confirm whether a specific flight will operate.

Do not change the scheduled time to the estimated or delayed time when judging the protected window. ENAC refers to the published scheduled departure.

Rome Fiumicino and Ciampino

Rome has two overlapping entries: a 24-hour ADR Security action and an Aviation Services action from 11:00 to 15:00. They cover different work. A traveler should therefore check both flight operation and the time needed to reach the gate.

Departing from Rome

Check in online and save the boarding pass before leaving the accommodation. If you have a checked bag, confirm when the airline's desk opens. Arriving many hours early does not help if bag drop is closed, and an airport may manage terminal entry during heavy disruption.

Follow the airline's stated arrival time unless the airline or airport publishes different advice. Add a reasonable queue buffer, but do not rely on a social-media estimate for a five-hour security line. No official source currently gives a September 13 queue forecast.

Passengers with a 11:00 to 15:00 departure need to watch the Aviation Services action as well as security. That company does not handle every flight at both airports. The airline can tell you whether its operation uses the affected provider.

Arriving in Rome

An arriving passenger does not normally join the same outbound passenger-security queue. Border control, baggage delivery, customs and an onward transfer are separate steps. A security-staff action can still affect airport access or staffing, while a handling action can affect baggage and turnaround work.

Do not assume a flight will be cancelled because it lands during the strike. Also do not book a tight train or separate flight immediately after arrival. Wait for the airline to publish the flight status and allow extra time for bags and terminal movement.

Connecting at Fiumicino

A through ticket gives the operating airlines responsibility for a protected connection. Separate tickets leave the passenger carrying most of the risk. If the itinerary requires collecting a bag and clearing security again, treat it as a fresh departure and build a much larger buffer.

Save both boarding passes and the terminal information offline. If the first flight is delayed, contact the airline before voluntarily abandoning the itinerary.

Pisa and Florence

The listed ground-service actions at Pisa and Florence run from 11:00 to 15:00. They concern Toscana Aeroporti, GH Toscana and Consulta personnel. Likely pressure points include check-in support, baggage handling, passenger flow and aircraft turnaround, depending on which company serves the flight.

Cabin baggage reduces dependence on baggage delivery, but it does not remove check-in, gate or aircraft-turnaround risk. Keep liquids and bag dimensions within the airline's rules so an oversized cabin bag does not become a last-minute checked bag.

If you can choose between Pisa and Florence, do not switch airports merely because both appear in the listing. Compare the actual airline notice, replacement fare, surface journey and refund terms. A self-funded change can cost more than waiting for an operational decision.

Cagliari, Alghero and Olbia

Sardinia has the densest group of September 13 listings.

Cagliari has easyJet's special four-hour window from 11:00 to 15:00, a SOGAER group action from 11:00 to 15:00, and another action covering SOGAER, SOGAER Security and SOGAERDYN from 13:00 to 17:00. Alghero and Olbia each have a 24-hour airport-company action.

This matters for more than flight cancellation. Island airports have fewer practical same-day surface alternatives than Rome, Pisa or Florence. A rebooking to another Sardinian airport may still require a long road transfer and a new plan for checked baggage or a rental car.

Before accepting a different airport:

1. Check whether the airline or passenger must arrange the road transfer.
2. Confirm the new arrival time and rental-car desk closing time.
3. Ask where checked baggage will be delivered.
4. Price the complete transfer before choosing a refund.
5. Keep accommodation and car-hire changes in writing.

A mainland airport is not a simple substitute for Sardinia. Ferries introduce another ticket, port transfer and travel day.

What easyJet passengers should do

The airline action is national, so an easyJet flight can be exposed even when it uses an airport without a separate local strike entry. Exposure does not prove cancellation.

Use the easyJet Flight Tracker and Manage Bookings. easyJet says its tracker and mobile app carry real-time status. It also says passengers should still meet the check-in times on the booking unless the airline tells them otherwise.

If easyJet cancels the flight, its current help page offers a free move to another flight, a voucher or a refund. Read the consequence before selecting. The airline says choosing a voucher or refund ends eligibility for accommodation or expenses because the passenger is no longer traveling with easyJet.

Do not press a voluntary cancellation button while the flight still operates. A voluntary change and an airline cancellation can have different cost and rights outcomes.

What passengers on other airlines should do

An ITA Airways, Ryanair, Wizz Air, British Airways, Lufthansa, United or other flight is not part of the easyJet crew action merely because it uses an Italian airport. It may still depend on affected security or handling staff at Rome, Tuscany or Sardinia.

Use this order:

1. Check the airline's booking record and direct messages.
2. Check the departure airport's live board.
3. Check the arrival airport if baggage or a connection matters.
4. Look for the flight number on ENAC's guaranteed-flight page when a September 13 list is posted.
5. Call the airline only when the online record and airport board conflict or a connection needs protection.

An airport strike headline cannot identify the handling contractor for every airline. Ask the carrier rather than guessing from the terminal.

Should you move the flight now?

Moving a trip now may be sensible when the airline offers a no-fee waiver and the itinerary cannot tolerate a lost day. Examples include a cruise departure, a wedding, an unprotected long-haul connection or a medical appointment.

Waiting is usually more sensible when the flight remains confirmed, the airline has not offered a waiver and the trip has a flexible first day. Buying a second nonrefundable ticket can create two valid bookings and no reimbursement for the voluntary replacement.

Passenger rights if the airline cancels
