Pacific Surfliner closure September 12-13: alternatives
No Pacific Surfliner trains will run anywhere between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on Saturday, September 12 or Sunday, September 13, 2026. The operator says there will be no bus bridge replacing the trains. Travelers need to change dates or arrange a separate bus, car or flight.
The disruption begins earlier for two Friday evening services. Train 794 will end in Los Angeles on September 11, with passengers accommodated by bus. Train 595 will be cancelled, also with passengers accommodated by bus.

The short answer: do not travel to a Pacific Surfliner station on September 12 or 13 expecting a train or a full-route replacement bus. Shift the rail trip outside the closure or book another mode for the whole affected leg. A scheduled Amtrak Connection bus is not a bus bridge for a cancelled train.

The September 12 and 13 shutdown includes the complete Pacific Surfliner corridor. Short alerts sometimes name Los Angeles to San Diego, but trips involving Ventura, Santa Barbara, Goleta and San Luis Obispo are affected too.
What is closed and why
Pacific Surfliner says Union Pacific, Metrolink and North County Transit District work will close track both north and south of Los Angeles. The work includes a channel project south of Irvine, slope and trail work around San Clemente, maintenance in Tunnel 26 north of Chatsworth, and other Ventura Subdivision repairs.
Several jobs are being done during the same weekend. For a passenger, the reason matters less than the scope: there is no usable Pacific Surfliner segment anywhere along the named San Diego to San Luis Obispo corridor on Saturday or Sunday.
Metrolink is affected separately. Its Ventura County, Orange County and Inland Empire-Orange County lines will also be suspended on September 12 and 13. Metrolink says it will not provide alternate transportation. OCTA says the 91/Perris Valley Line is scheduled to operate, but that does not recreate the closed coastal journey.
No bus bridge does not mean every Amtrak bus stops
Pacific Surfliner says its scheduled Amtrak Connection bus routes will continue to operate. It also warns that their normal train connections will not be available.
These are two different services:
- A bus bridge replaces a cancelled train across the closed railway section. There is no such bridge on September 12 or 13.
- An Amtrak Connection bus is a separately scheduled route that normally extends selected journeys beyond the railway. Some of these buses continue, but the train that ordinarily feeds the bus will not run.
Do not build a journey by matching an old train timetable to a bus departure. Search the complete date-specific itinerary in the booking system. If a bus appears, confirm that the ticket covers it and that the boarding point, baggage rules and arrival time work for the trip.

The simplest fix is moving the rail day. If the dates cannot move, compare the whole journey rather than only the advertised fare. A direct bus may leave from a different part of Los Angeles or San Diego. A rental car can add parking, fuel and one-way charges. A short flight adds airport transfers, check-in and security time.
Greyhound currently lists Los Angeles to San Diego journeys, but schedules, stops, baggage allowance and seat availability can change. Search the actual travel date before cancelling the rail booking. This article does not treat an intercity bus listing as guaranteed replacement capacity.
What to do with an existing ticket
Start with the reservation itself. A traveler discussion about an older closure is not evidence that a September 2026 ticket will be changed automatically.
Pacific Surfliner describes its tickets as Flexible Fares. Its current ticket page says they can be cancelled for a full refund to the original payment method, without a fee, if cancelled before departure. There are no change fees under that published policy.
Check the terms shown in the booking account before acting, especially for Business Class, a multi-ride pass, a package bought through another seller or a journey that includes another Amtrak route. Contact the seller if the reservation still displays a train on September 12 or 13. Do not wait until the listed departure time to ask for a refund.
Keep the official advisory, booking reference and any cancellation confirmation together. A new bus, car, hotel or flight purchase has its own refund rules and will not automatically inherit Amtrak's terms.
Protect airport, cruise and event connections
A normal rail arrival leaves too little protection when the train is not operating at all. Rebuild the trip from the fixed deadline backward.
For LAX, the official FlyAway page lists service between Union Station and the airport. That only solves the airport leg. The traveler still needs a working route to Union Station, and the affected Metrolink lines cannot be assumed to provide it that weekend.
For San Diego International Airport, the San Diego Flyer links Old Town Transit Center with the terminals. Again, it does not replace a missing intercity train into Old Town.
For a cruise, sports event or prepaid tour, arriving the previous day is usually the lower-risk decision. If that is impossible, use one through booking where available and leave a margin for freeway traffic, parking and terminal transfers. Save the operator's contact route and the final mile directions offline.
September 19 and 20 are different
The following weekend is a partial closure, not a repeat of the full shutdown. On September 19 and 20, affected Pacific Surfliner passengers transfer between Los Angeles and Van Nuys by bus.
The current advisory lists northbound trains 761, 765, 769, 777 and 785 and southbound trains 770, 774, 782, 790 and 794 for the bus connection. Trains 757 and 786 are cancelled. The buses will not stop at Glendale or Burbank.
Do not use the September 19 bus details for September 12 or 13. The first weekend has no bus bridge at all. Check the live notice before the later weekend because train and bus assignments can still change.
Apps and files for a rail-free weekend
- Amtrak app: check the specific train and reservation as well as the normal route timetable.
- Pacific Surfliner alerts: subscribe to email, text or push notices where available and use the train-status tool before leaving.
- Metrolink app and alerts: use these only for an operating Metrolink route. The three named lines are suspended on September 12 and 13.
- Transit or local agency planner: compare the actual bus stop with the hotel, airport or venue. A result that includes a closed rail leg is not a valid alternative.
- Offline maps: save Los Angeles, Orange County, San Diego and any Central Coast stop needed by the reroute.
Take screenshots of the replacement booking, boarding address and cancellation record. Keep the hotel address and one emergency contact outside the app that made the booking. Charge a power bank before a long bus or road journey.

Will any Pacific Surfliner train run on September 12 or 13?
No. The operator says there will be no Pacific Surfliner trains anywhere between San Diego and San Luis Obispo on either day.
