The Jinju Namgang Yudeung Festival runs from Saturday, October 3 to Sunday, October 18, 2026, around Jinju Fortress and the Namgang River in South Korea. Lanterns are scheduled to light from 6:00 PM to midnight each night. Bridges and festival booths are listed from 1:00 PM to 11:00 PM.

Plan this as an evening or overnight trip, not a quick daytime stop. Travelers coming from Busan need to secure the return bus or train before staying for the lights. From Seoul, staying overnight in Jinju leaves enough time to see the festival after dark without racing for an early departure.

Choose the journey home first. The organizer has published the 2026 dates, lighting hours and headline show dates, but its English traffic page still says "Coming soon." Do not copy a previous year's shuttle stops or parking map into a 2026 plan.

This guide was checked on September 12, 2026. The official site had begun adding 2026 program images and times on September 9, while some navigation labels and transport pages still referred to 2025.

Jinju Lantern Festival 2026 dates and key times

The official festival homepage is the primary schedule source. It currently mixes updated 2026 material with older 2025 labels, so use the dates printed beside each event rather than assuming every linked subpage has been refreshed.

Which festival night should you choose?

October 3 for the opening sequence

The opening Saturday has the densest confirmed sequence. A ceremonial ritual is listed at Jinju Fortress at 6:00 PM. A district lantern parade starts at the Music Fountain at 6:30 PM, followed by the opening lighting at the Mangyeong-dong Special Stage at 7:30 PM. A drone show follows at 7:50 PM and fireworks at 8:00 PM.

This is the broadest single-night program, but it also creates the greatest risk of crowding and a difficult exit. Arrive before lighting and avoid booking the last possible return connection.

October 9 or 17 for fireworks

Fireworks are also listed for Friday, October 9 and Saturday, October 17 at 8:00 PM. October 17 includes a drone show at 7:50 PM. These dates suit visitors who care about the river show but cannot attend opening night.

Choose the 9th for a Friday visit or the 17th for the last published drone-and-fireworks combination. The final Sunday, October 18, is not currently listed as a fireworks night.

A weekday for a simpler riverside walk

The lantern zones are scheduled every night. A weekday removes the headline-show draw but can make the river route easier to manage. It is the practical choice for photography, children who dislike large crowds, or anyone who needs more time on bridges and uneven approaches.

What will visitors see along the Namgang River?

The 2026 material divides the river into themed lantern zones. Current listings include Korean writing and King Sejong, modern art, traditional aesthetics, aerospace themes, a character area and displays linked to Jinju's history. The installations run between riverside landmarks rather than inside one enclosed venue.

The festival has historical roots in the sieges of Jinju Fortress, when lanterns on the river were used for military signals and communication with people outside the walls. Visit Korea's current listing explains that origin. The modern event combines that history with large illuminated sculptures, bridges, performances and activity booths.

Allow at least two to three hours after lighting. Trying to see both riverbanks, Jinju Fortress and every themed area in one rushed circuit creates unnecessary backtracking. Pick one starting bank, cross once if the current bridge rules suit you, and finish near the transport route home.

Are Jinju Lantern Festival tickets required?

The organizer currently publishes general lighting and booth hours, but its English experience pages do not yet provide a complete 2026 price table. Some travel sellers offer bundled activity tickets, which is not evidence that ordinary riverside viewing requires the same package.

Treat these as separate purchases:

• access to public riverside areas;
• entry to Jinju Fortress if a current festival rule changes normal access;
• temporary bridge crossings;
• wishing or floating-lantern activities;
• boat trips, tours or seller bundles; and
• intercity transport to and from Jinju.

Busan to Jinju Lantern Festival

Busan is the more practical large-city base. Intercity buses connect Busan and Jinju, but Jinju has more than one bus terminal and English booking sites can label them differently. Confirm the departure terminal, arrival terminal and return terminal as one matched itinerary.

Use Bustago and TxBus to compare the date you need. Do not assume the last departure shown in a blog post still operates, or that a foreign card will work on every booking path. If online payment fails, leave enough time to buy at the terminal and accept that a popular evening may sell out.

A same-night return can work when a confirmed seat leaves enough time after the lights. Without that seat, stay in Jinju. A taxi all the way to Busan is not a sensible default fallback.

Seoul to Jinju: day trip or overnight?

Jinju has a rail station. Use KORAIL for the actual 2026 train on your date. The station is outside the central riverside festival area, so the rail ticket solves only the intercity part of the journey.

From Seoul, plan an overnight unless a confirmed return train leaves after the part of the program you want to see. A timetable that forces departure before lighting or fireworks defeats the purpose of the trip. Compare the complete journey, including the local transfer between Jinju Station and the river.

Parking, shuttles and the missing 2026 traffic plan

The organizer's English traffic page currently says "Coming soon." That means temporary parking lots, shuttle routes, operating times, road closures and drop-off points are not yet confirmed there for 2026.

If driving, do not set the central festival area as the final parking destination based on an old map. Recheck the official traffic page, save the published lot name in Korean and take a screenshot of the return stop. If the page remains incomplete close to travel, ask accommodation staff or the Jinju tourist information service for the current city notice.

Jinju Lantern Festival with children

The character and space-themed lantern zones give younger visitors something recognizable, but the event is still a long night walk near a river. A weekday visit with one bank and one crossing is easier than an opening-night attempt to cover everything.

Bring a compact stroller only if the current bridge and shuttle rules allow it. The official English pages do not yet publish a complete 2026 stroller or accessibility plan. Keep food, toilets, a fixed meeting point and the route back to transport in the plan before adding more exhibits.
