JKIA strike recovery: KQ targets normal schedule September 2

Current status, checked at 9:00 PM East Africa Time on September 1, 2026: the Kenya Aviation Workers Union has called off the strike, but Kenya Airways says customers should still expect delays while its teams restore the schedule. The airline expects normal scheduled operations to resume on Wednesday, September 2.
The end of the strike does not restore every flight immediately. Emirates cancelled EK717 and EK718 between Dubai and Nairobi on September 1, while Kenya Airways' August 31 advisory still provides rebooking and refund options for directly affected passengers. Aircraft, crews and passengers can remain out of position after workers return.
The passenger decision: treat September 1 as a recovery day, not an all-flights-normal day. Search the exact operating flight before leaving for JKIA. Kenya Airways' September 2 target does not reinstate a cancelled flight or protect a connection automatically.
This recovery alert will stay on the same URL. It will be updated if KAA, KCAA or an airline publishes a passenger instruction that changes the decisions below.
JKIA delay status at a glance
| Question | Verified answer at 9:00 PM EAT on September 1 |
|---|---|
| Is the strike over? | Yes. KAWU signed a return-to-work agreement and directed affected members to resume normal duties immediately. |
| Is JKIA operating normally? | Operations are recovering. Kenya Airways still tells customers to expect delays on September 1. |
| Which flights are affected? | Emirates confirmed EK717 and EK718 were cancelled on September 1. Search the operating flight and date because a return to work does not reinstate a cancellation automatically. |
| How long are Kenya Airways delays? | Kenya Airways reported an average delay of two to three hours on August 30. Its August 31 advisory did not give one current delay estimate for every flight. |
| Are flights cancelled? | Yes, some flights have been cancelled. KAA did not publish an airport-wide cancellation list, so an airline must confirm the status of one booking. |
| What caused the delays? | Kenya Airways attributed the disruption to industrial action by air traffic control workers. KAA acknowledged delays and cancellations but passengers still need carrier-specific status. |
| When will normal service return? | Kenya Airways expects its normal scheduled operations to resume Wednesday, September 2. That is the airline's target, not an airport-wide guarantee for every carrier. |
| Should passengers go to the airport? | Kenya Airways says its customers should go only when advised or when the flight is confirmed as operating. Other passengers should follow their own carrier's instruction. |
| Are Wilson and other airports affected? | KAA used the plural "airports," and local reports described disruption beyond JKIA. Check each flight rather than transferring the JKIA delay estimate to another airport. |
Why the end of the strike is not an all-flights-normal notice
The return-to-work agreement changes the labor status. The Kenya Times reported that employees were to resume their duties and cooperate with management on restoring normal operations. It did not publish a flight-by-flight recovery time.
Kenya Airways has since added a clearer recovery target: customers should expect some delays while its teams restore flight schedules, with normal scheduled operations anticipated on September 2. That target applies to Kenya Airways' schedule; it does not prove that every airline serving JKIA will recover at the same time.
That distinction matters at a regional hub. An inbound aircraft may still be in another city, a crew may have reached a duty-time limit, and a passenger or checked bag may already have been rerouted. Airlines need time to rebuild the schedule even after air traffic and airport staff return.
Keep any confirmed rebooking until the operating airline changes it. Do not travel to the airport for a flight that still shows cancelled, and do not assume a replacement sector will appear automatically.
Check the operating flight, not the airport headline
An airport-wide notice cannot tell you whether KQ, Jambojet, Emirates, Qatar Airways or another carrier has changed one booking. Open the operating airline's flight-status page and search by flight number and date. If the ticket was sold by one airline but operated by another, the operating carrier controls the movement of the aircraft.
For Kenya Airways, use its official flight-status page and Manage Booking in the website or KQ mobile app. The airline asked customers to update their contact details so it could send flight changes. Do that before calling because a missing or old phone number can leave the passenger outside the notification list.
Keep the booking reference, ticket number and operating flight number together. Take a screenshot of the latest status with its time. A search-engine result, forwarded WhatsApp message or photograph of an airport board can be older than the airline record.
KAA's general departure guide says passengers should check with the airline because check-in operations vary. It also says most counters open at least two hours before departure. During a disruption, that general timing does not override a booking-specific instruction from the airline.
Emirates cancellations and Dubai connections
Emirates' advisory lists EK717 and EK718 between Dubai and Nairobi as cancelled on September 1. It also lists EK719, EK720, EK721 and EK722 as cancelled on August 31. The airline says customers connecting through Dubai to Nairobi will not be accepted for travel at their point of origin while this advisory applies.
If an Emirates ticket was booked through a travel agency, the airline directs the passenger back to that agency for rebooking. Direct-booking customers should contact Emirates. Check Manage Your Booking before leaving for the first airport, especially when Nairobi is an onward connection rather than the starting point.
What to do before leaving for JKIA
Use this order so a two-hour delay does not become a missed flight:
- Search the exact flight on the operating airline's site or app.
- Open Manage Booking and confirm the phone number and email attached to the reservation.
- Check whether the airline has changed the departure time, check-in deadline or terminal.
- Ask about every later sector on the same ticket if the first delay threatens a connection.
- Save the airline message, ticket, passport copy, hotel address and insurance policy offline.
- Keep medication, charging cables and essential documents in hand luggage.
- Leave enough road time for normal Nairobi traffic unless the airline gives a different airport-arrival instruction.
Do not cancel the booking or buy a replacement flight based only on a long delay. A delayed service may still depart, and a voluntary cancellation can have different fare consequences from an airline cancellation.
If the airline tells you not to travel yet, ask for that instruction in writing. If it tells you to report at the original time, follow that direction even when a tracking site predicts a later departure.
Protect a connection through Nairobi
The first question is whether the flights are on one ticket. A protected through booking gives the airline a single itinerary to manage. Separate tickets create two contracts, and the second airline may treat a missed flight as a no-show even when the first flight was late.
For a through ticket, contact the operating airline as soon as the connection looks tight. Ask whether the onward sector is protected, whether checked bags remain tagged to the final destination and where to report after landing. KAA says airlines have transfer desks in the departure halls. Airport or airline staff can direct a passenger to the correct desk, but only the airline can confirm rebooking and baggage handling.
For separate tickets, tell both airlines before departure. Ask the first carrier whether bags can be checked through, but do not assume an interline agreement will be applied. If bags must be collected in Nairobi, the traveler may need immigration clearance, baggage collection, a terminal move, check-in and security before the second flight's cutoff.
Do not accept a reroute until you understand what happens to the return and any later sectors. A change to one leg can alter the rest of a linked itinerary.
If you are already waiting at JKIA
Stay close enough to hear gate changes, but use the airline's digital status as a second source. Keep the departure board, app and gate announcement aligned before moving to another terminal or lounge.
Ask the airline desk for four facts:
- the current estimated departure time;
- whether the aircraft and crew are assigned;
- what happens to the onward connection and checked bag; and
- whether the airline can provide a written disruption reason.
Save receipts for meals, transport and accommodation that the delay forces you to buy. Reimbursement is not automatic. It can depend on the carrier, route, ticket, cause and applicable law, but a claim without receipts is harder to assess.
KAA says Wi-Fi is available at the airport and lists information desks around JKIA. Public Wi-Fi can help, but do not depend on it for the only copy of a boarding pass or booking reference. Congestion, sign-in pages and a low battery can all arrive at the same time.
Rebooking and refund steps for Kenya Airways
Kenya Airways' August 31 disruption advisory gives affected passengers a specific waiver. It says they may move travel to a later date, with change and no-show penalties waived, if the change is made by September 20, 2026. A destination change can still create a fare difference. The same deadline applies to refund requests; the advisory offers a full refund for a wholly unused ticket and the unused portion of a partly used ticket, with the refund penalty waived. These terms apply to passengers directly affected by this disruption, not automatically to every Kenya Airways booking.
Kenya Airways publishes a self-rebooking service for flight delays and cancellations. Its page says eligible disrupted passengers can choose an available alternative flight through the website or KQ app without an extra rebooking charge. Availability and eligibility still need to appear in the booking.
If the self-service option is missing, use the official contact page. It lists a 24-hour Customer Excellence Centre and the numbers +254 711 024 747, +254 734 104 747 and +254 705 474 747. Use the contact details on the current official page rather than a number copied from a social post.
Kenya Airways' online refund page says an unused or partly unused ticket may be eligible depending on the fare. A refund request can cancel the remaining itinerary, so read the form before submitting it. Ask first whether rebooking protects the journey better.
Passengers on another airline must use that carrier's disruption policy. Kenya Airways' tools do not apply merely because the trip uses JKIA.
Hotels, transfers and insurance
Tell a hotel or transfer provider about the delay before its no-show deadline. Send the airline update and ask whether the reservation can move. Do not assume an airport delay automatically waives a hotel, safari, rail or tour condition.
If an extra Nairobi night becomes necessary, ask the airline what it will arrange before booking an expensive room. When immediate action is unavoidable, choose a reasonable option, retain an itemized receipt and record why the airline could not provide an answer in time.
Travel insurance wording varies. Contact the insurer before paying for a replacement flight when possible. Keep the airline's written delay or cancellation notice, the original and revised itinerary, receipts and communication log. A news report about a strike is not a substitute for the operating airline's disruption record.
Keep booking updates reachable without relying on airport Wi-Fi
A Kenya Roaming eSIM can provide a separate data line for airline alerts, Manage Booking, maps, accommodation messages and ride coordination on a compatible unlocked phone. It does not change a flight, guarantee coverage inside every part of a terminal or bypass network congestion.
The public Roaming eSIM catalog returned 17 Kenya plans when checked at 10:39 PM EAT. Fixed-data examples included 1 GB for 7 days at USD 4.02, 3 GB for 15 days at USD 10.70, 5 GB for 30 days at USD 17.84 and 10 GB for 30 days at USD 32.56. Those examples showed a public 3G/4G speed label and top-up support. Inventory, price and package fields can change, so open the selected card before checkout.
Roaming eSIM's practical edge during an airport disruption: a traveler can install a Kenya or broader Africa plan before reaching the terminal, keep the usual SIM available for its normal calls and messages, and use the published 24/7 support route for product help. That avoids depending on an airport SIM counter while the passenger is trying to protect a flight. Mobile data cannot resolve the air traffic control problem or promise that an airline message will arrive immediately.
Choose a Kenya Roaming eSIM for a Kenya-only trip. Compare Africa, Global 120+ Areas and Global139 only after checking every country on the actual route against the selected product card.
The country versus regional Roaming eSIM guide helps with an onward Africa itinerary. Use the travel data calculator for an allowance estimate, check the device with the eSIM compatibility guide, and read the installation timing guide before departure. The Kenya eTA and travel insurance update covers a separate entry-document decision.
Ten questions passengers are asking about the JKIA disruption
1. Is the JKIA strike over today?
Yes. KAWU called off the industrial action on September 1 and directed affected members to resume normal duties immediately. Individual flights can remain delayed or cancelled while the schedule recovers.
2. How do I know whether my flight is delayed or cancelled?
Search the operating flight on the airline's official site or app. Confirm the date and flight number, then save the result with its update time.
3. Should I arrive at the original check-in time?
Yes, unless the operating airline gives a different instruction for the booking. A later estimated departure does not automatically move the check-in cutoff.
4. What happens if I miss a connection at JKIA?
Contact the airline before the first flight departs. A through ticket may be protected, while separate tickets usually require each airline to make its own decision.
5. Will my checked bag move to the new flight?
Do not assume it will. Ask the airline whether the bag remains tagged to the final destination and where to report if the itinerary changes.
6. Can Kenya Airways rebook me without a fee?
Its official self-rebooking page says eligible disrupted passengers can select an available alternative without an extra charge. Open the booking to see whether the option applies to the ticket.
7. Can I claim a refund for a delayed flight?
Possibly, but the answer depends on the airline, ticket, route, cause and whether the flight operates. Ask about rebooking first and read the fare and refund terms before cancelling the remaining itinerary.
8. Are Wilson Airport, Kisumu or other Kenyan airports delayed too?
KAA said some departing flights at its airports were delayed, but it did not publish one delay estimate for every airport. Check the exact operating flight.
9. Is airport Wi-Fi enough for a long wait?
KAA says Wi-Fi is available, but keep the booking reference, boarding pass, contacts and hotel address offline. A separate mobile-data option can reduce dependence on the airport network.
10. When will JKIA return to normal operations?
Kenya Airways anticipates returning to its normal scheduled operation on September 2. Other carriers may recover on a different timetable, and an individual flight can still change. Follow KAA, KCAA and the operating airline, and search the flight again before each travel decision.
Update policy
We will update this page when an official source publishes a full recovery time, a material change in affected operations or a passenger instruction that changes the decisions above. The checked time will move with every material update. Use the operating airline for the final answer on one booking.
