Lewes Bonfire 2026: travel restrictions, tickets and alternatives

South Street fireworks above rooftops during Lewes Bonfire Night in November 2013

Lewes Bonfire is on Thursday, November 5, 2026. Public bodies and the bonfire societies ask people who live outside Lewes to choose a local celebration instead. Road closures begin at 16:45, and evening rail restrictions make a normal after-work visit impractical. Buying a firesite ticket does not provide transport or admission to every display.

That is the starting point for this Lewes Bonfire 2026 travel guide. If your UK holiday includes early November, choose the celebration first and check its actual date, admission and return journey before committing to a room or train fare.

Should visitors travel to Lewes on November 5?

Use the 2026 multi-agency notice, published by East Sussex Fire & Rescue Service on September 18, for the current joint guidance.

Lewes has a particular local tradition. Visit Lewes explains that separate bonfire societies organize the torchlit processions and their own firesites. It is not one council-run fireworks show with a common entrance and a single ticket.

Respect that distinction when reading a ticket page. A society selling admission to its field is not announcing that the wider town has unrestricted access or that extra trains will take spectators home.

Your situationThe useful decision
Visiting Sussex and choosing a fireworks eveningLook at an organized event local to your base; check its current terms
Bringing young children or a dogFollow the official advice against Lewes Bonfire; do not assume a ticket removes that concern
Already staying or working in LewesResolve your necessary journey before the restrictions, including the return
Holding a particular society's firesite ticketRead that site's admission terms and arrange transport independently
Planning a normal day trip to LewesConsider another date so the evening closures do not determine the visit

An overnight booking may remove the need for a late train, but it does not turn the official advice into an invitation. Ask accommodation providers about access arrangements for an existing booking rather than assume a postcode near the center means you can arrive by car whenever you like.

Which last trains are published for November 5?

The notice lists these departures from Lewes:

DepartureDestinationCalling-point detail in the notice
16:44BrightonAll stations to Brighton
16:55London VictoriaCooksbridge, Wivelsfield, then the usual pattern
16:59OrePolegate, Eastbourne, then all stations to Ore
17:02SeafordAll stations to Seaford except Southease

Trains are not expected to call at Lewes, Falmer, Cooksbridge, Glynde or Southease from around 17:00 until November 6's first services. Berwick and Southease can have earlier last trains. Check your exact station and direction with Southern.

These are commuter-planning details, not a route into the evening celebrations. In particular, the listed 17:02 departure does not mean services continue normally after 17:00.

Search for both legs using Thursday, November 5, not today's timetable. If you have a connection, leave room for that connection to fail; the final departure is a poor fallback for an earlier journey you have not yet checked.

Road closures also affect people who are not attending

Residents are advised to get vehicles home before 16:00, ahead of the 16:45 closures. Visitors are asked not to bring vehicles into town.

For the full closure map and any revisions, use the council's Lewes Bonfire travel page. Do not use a navigation app's ordinary driving time as confirmation that a road will be open.

The practical questions are about the whole journey: can you reach the address, is parking permitted, and when can you leave? A parking space found on a map answers none of those by itself. Confirm arrangements for essential work, an existing accommodation booking or a necessary collection directly with the relevant provider.

This guide does not recommend village parking, an unconfirmed shuttle, a night walk across the Downs or an old bike-train departure as a way around the restrictions. A forum account of what worked in 2023 or 2025 is not a 2026 operating plan.

What does a Cliffe firesite ticket include?

Cliffe Bonfire Society's 2026 ticket page is specific: admission is for the Cliffe firesite only, at Mountfield Road, BN7 2XD. It lists opening at 21:00 and fireworks expected at 22:15, with timing subject to change.

The society says attendees must make their own travel arrangements. It also says there are no onsite facilities, prohibits animals and personal fireworks, and describes the site as unsuitable for children, people with breathing difficulties or anyone unable to stand for long periods.

Do not assume a ticket includes a toilet, seating, a return coach or entry to another society's field. Follow the booking link from the society's own page and inspect the actual offer, including fees and any conditions, before paying. We are not quoting an admission price because the society's information page does not establish one.

Cliffe's 2026 programme is a separate purchase. The society lists it at GBP4, with three for GBP10 when sold on the street or at the Yard. Buying a programme supports the society and provides its published information; it should not be mistaken for an admission ticket. The page has an older year in its URL but explicitly identifies the current programme as 2026.

Local alternatives have different dates and rules

The fire service's Choose Local calendar shows that Sussex bonfire season extends well beyond November 5. Choose an event appropriate to where you are staying rather than replace one difficult cross-county trip with another.

Firle: Saturday, October 24

Firle Bonfire Society confirms a 19:00 procession and fireworks at approximately 21:00. Its current advance ticket is GBP12.50 plus a booking fee, rising to GBP17 on the day. Under-13s go free. The GBP10 early-bird allocation ended on September 14; an old price snippet is not the current offer. Advance tickets are non-refundable.

Firle lists parking in the adjacent field, accessible parking near the entrance, standard and accessible toilets, and food and a bar. It prohibits parking in the village. Those facilities are useful details, but they do not establish that every part of an outdoor field event will suit every mobility need. Ask the organizer about the route and ground conditions relevant to your party.

Seaford: Saturday, October 17

Seaford Bonfire Society's calendar lists its 2026 night on October 17 at 19:00. Check the organizer again before departure, including its event information. That page includes access restrictions around Martello Fields and says there is no designated disabled parking; limited Blue Badge accommodation should not be treated as a reserved space.

Later dates to check near your base

The fire service calendar also lists Isfield and Little Horsted on October 30, Newick on October 31 and Barcombe on November 21. These are leads for local planning, not a promise about tickets, start times or accessibility. Read the chosen society's latest announcement before building an itinerary around it.

For a longer holiday, the United Kingdom with kids guide covers broader family trip choices. A noisy nighttime display and a daytime attraction need different planning.

Sussex transport apps and offline journey details

The Southern Railway app supports journey searches, service updates and ticket management. Brighton & Hove Buses' app provides journey planning, alerts, live departures and mobile tickets. Select the actual date and stop, and read service notices alongside the journey result.

Save your accommodation address, the operator's notice and any booking documents before leaving Wi-Fi. Store tickets in the format the issuer accepts; a screenshot is not automatically a substitute for a ticket that requires an app or changing barcode. Agree a meeting place and a time to regroup if companions separate.

Keep enough battery for the journey home. Mobile data can help you read an updated notice or contact accommodation, but it does not create a bus service, reopen a road or guarantee reception in a crowd.

Mobile data for the rest of your UK trip

OpenSim United Kingdom plans can give overseas visitors a defined allowance for transport apps, maps and messages without relying entirely on public Wi-Fi. On October 16, the catalog listed 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76, with top-up available for that specific plan. That makes the allowance and retail cost clear before a wider UK visit.

Check the UK roaming included in your home plan first. If it already supplies enough data, another plan may add no value. Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before buying.

Sources and updates

Checked October 16, 2026 against the linked multi-agency notice, fire service calendar, society pages and transport operators. Review this guide when the final November 5 transport notice changes, a society updates its admission terms or an event is cancelled. The dated 2026 notice takes precedence over older event pages and remembered travel arrangements.
