London Euston closure September 20: routes and tickets

There are no main-line trains between London Euston and Watford Junction until 16:00 on Sunday, September 20, 2026. Avanti West Coast, London Northwestern Railway, the London Overground Lioness line and Lumo are all affected while Network Rail removes Oxhey Grange footbridge.

The short answer: Move an Avanti journey to September 18, 19, 21 or 22 if that is practical. If you must travel before 16:00 on Sunday, expect a different London terminal, at least one replacement bus and a longer journey. Trains can return to Euston after 16:00, but the official advice says they are expected to be extremely busy.

What is closed and when

Network Rail is closing all four West Coast Main Line tracks and the adjacent Lioness line beneath Oxhey Grange footbridge. The closure starts at midnight after Saturday and is planned to finish at 16:00 on Sunday.

The footbridge sits south of Watford Junction. Network Rail says inspections found it had deteriorated faster than expected, so engineers will lift it out in one operation with a 100-metre crane capable of lifting 1,200 tonnes.

The closure breaks the direct route used by trains between London and the West Midlands, North West England, North Wales and Scotland. It also interrupts local services through Watford.

Reopening time is not the same as recovery time. The first Euston trains after 16:00 have to absorb passengers who delayed their journey as well as normal Sunday demand. Plan around the service shown for your route, not around a promise that everything becomes normal at 16:01.

Should you travel before or after 16:00?

If the journey can move to another day, that is the cleanest option for an Avanti passenger. The company has published a wider travel window, so an existing September 20 ticket can be used from Friday, September 18 through Tuesday, September 22 at no extra cost. If one half of a return is affected, both the outward and return legs may move within that window.

If Sunday is fixed but the arrival time is flexible, compare a journey after 16:00 with the full replacement route. Waiting may remove the bus, but it can place you on one of the busiest trains of the day. Reserve where the operator allows it and do not build a tight flight, theatre, cruise or separate-ticket connection around the planned reopening.

Travel before 16:00 only when the trip is necessary and the longer route is workable. Check the final destination in the planner. A route into St Pancras or King's Cross may still be useful, but it is not the same arrival point as Euston.

Avanti West Coast route before 16:00

No Avanti train will run between London Euston and Milton Keynes Central before 16:00. Avanti trains start or finish at Milton Keynes or Rugby, depending on the service.

The published London route is:

1. travel by Avanti to or from Milton Keynes Central;
2. use the replacement bus between Milton Keynes Central and Bedford; and
3. use Thameslink or East Midlands Railway between Bedford and London St Pancras International.

Avanti says its existing ticket is accepted on this alternative route, so a passenger following the published plan does not need to buy another ticket. The company is running fewer trains across its network, including one train per hour from Milton Keynes to Scotland, Manchester and Liverpool, plus one hourly Rugby to Birmingham service.

Do not use an old direct Euston itinerary to estimate the trip. The bus loading, road traffic, walk between stops and a missed connection can all add time. Check the through itinerary that is actually offered for September 20.

London Northwestern Railway route before 16:00

London Northwestern trains that normally run between Euston and Milton Keynes instead run between Watford Junction and Milton Keynes. Services toward Birmingham and Crewe start or finish at Milton Keynes and operate to a reduced timetable.

There are two official ways around the closed section:

• Via Potters Bar: use Great Northern or Thameslink between London King's Cross and Potters Bar, then the replacement bus between Potters Bar and Watford Junction.
• Via Bedford: use Great Northern, Thameslink or East Midlands Railway between London St Pancras and Bedford, then the replacement bus between Bedford and Milton Keynes Central.

Choose the route shown for your origin and destination. The Potters Bar option connects with the Watford to Milton Keynes local service. The Bedford option reaches Milton Keynes directly and can be more logical for a longer-distance journey.

If your planner offers London Marylebone as an alternative for Birmingham, inspect the exact itinerary. Chiltern Railways is running an enhanced Marylebone to Birmingham Moor Street service, but it also has separate engineering changes on September 20, including no train between Marylebone and Aylesbury Vale Parkway via Amersham. Do not assume every Chiltern route is unaffected.

Lioness line and local Watford travel

The Lioness line does not provide a through Euston to Watford Junction train during the closure. A reduced service runs between Euston and Willesden Junction until approximately 16:00, while replacement buses run between Harrow & Wealdstone and Watford Junction.

Affected tickets are accepted at no extra cost on the Bakerloo line between Queen's Park and Harrow & Wealdstone. They are also accepted on these local bus sections:

• routes 142 and 258 between Bushey, Watford High Street and Watford Junction;
• routes 246 and R17 between Carpenders Park and Bushey; and
• routes 182 and H14 between Harrow & Wealdstone, Headstone Lane and Hatch End.

Use the TfL Journey Planner for the Underground and London bus part. National Rail warns that London Overground changes may not be fully represented in its own planner, so compare both sources.

Lumo services and the King's Cross option

National Rail lists four Lumo services for Sunday:

• 10:52 Crewe to Stirling;
• 16:19 Crewe to Stirling;
• 16:32 Stirling to London Euston; and
• 19:35 London Euston to Preston.

A Lumo ticket dated September 20 is accepted on Lumo services on September 19, 21 or 22 at no extra cost. A passenger who must travel on Sunday can use the existing ticket on Lumo between London King's Cross and Newcastle, then use the connection shown for the journey.

This is operator-specific guidance. It does not make every ticket valid on every East Coast train. Keep the current itinerary and any acceptance message available when boarding.

Avanti refund or alternative date

The special Avanti date window is useful because this is late-notice engineering work. It is different from the general rule for a voluntary ticket change.

Use one of these paths:

• Travel on another eligible date: keep the existing September 20 ticket and use it from September 18 to 22 under the published easement.
• Travel on Sunday: follow the amended journey and alternative-route acceptance shown by Avanti.
• Do not travel after a cancellation or change: request a full refund from the company that sold the ticket.

Do not cancel a ticket in the app before checking whether the special easement is more valuable. If a third-party retailer sold the ticket, the refund request normally goes back to that retailer.

A refund and Delay Repay are not the same. A refund is for an unused journey you abandon because the train is cancelled or changed. Delay Repay concerns a journey you actually make and the delay at the destination. Keep the ticket, the amended itinerary and the arrival time until the correct claim is settled.

Replacement buses, luggage and Passenger Assist

Replacement buses may be busier than usual. The pickup point may be outside the rail entrance, so check station signs or the station page instead of waiting on the usual platform.

Travel with luggage you can manage through an extra transfer. Do not assume a bicycle, large mobility device or reserved space on the train transfers automatically to a bus. Ask the relevant operator before leaving when that detail determines whether you can travel.

National Rail says any train company can arrange Passenger Assist across a multi-operator journey. Requests can be made up to two hours before the scheduled start, and turn-up-and-go help remains available, although short-notice assistance can take longer. Tell the operator that the route contains a replacement bus and a change of London terminal so the request covers the real itinerary.

Protect a flight or separate connection

The closure itself does not change an airline check-in or bag-drop deadline. If you are using the West Coast Main Line to reach an airport, work backward from the airline deadline and include the replacement bus, London transfer and one missed connection.

For Heathrow, the disrupted rail route reaches central London rather than the airport. For Luton, a route via Bedford may look geographically helpful, but only the live journey planner can confirm whether it works with the current Thameslink service and your ticket. Gatwick, Stansted and London City require separate cross-London connections.

Do not rely on the 16:00 reopening for a same-evening flight on a separate ticket. Move the rail journey earlier, use the permitted alternative date where possible, or compare an entirely different route with enough recovery time.

Keep the changed route available offline

Before leaving, save:

• the ticket barcode or a printable ticket copy;
• the amended through itinerary;
• the National Rail closure notice;
• the operator's ticket-easement message;
• the address of the replacement-bus stop;
• a map covering Euston, King's Cross and St Pancras; and
• booking references for any flight, hotel or event connected to the journey.

Charge the phone and carry a cable or power bank. Busy stations and vehicles can produce weak or inconsistent mobile service, so the offline copy matters even when you have data.

Mobile data for a changed UK rail journey

9. Will a replacement bus take my bicycle or mobility device?

Do not assume it will. Vehicle capacity and accessibility can differ. Contact the operator or Passenger Assist with the actual route, equipment and required transfer before departure.

10. Should I buy a separate ticket for the published alternative route?

Avanti explicitly says its existing ticket is accepted on the Milton Keynes, Bedford and St Pancras route. For another operator or a different route, use the current acceptance notice or ask staff before paying again.
