UP Express closure September 2026: bus guide
UP Express trains are not running on Saturday, September 19 or Sunday, September 20, 2026. Direct GO replacement buses run between Union Station Bus Terminal and Pearson Airport Terminal 1. They do not stop at Bloor, Mount Dennis or Weston.
If your flight is this weekend, do not walk to the usual UP train platform and assume a train will appear. Check the live trip first, identify the correct bus terminal, and allow more time than the normal 28-minute rail journey. UP Express has not published a fixed replacement-bus journey time, and road traffic can change it.

The immediate decision: use the direct GO bus if your journey is between downtown Union and Pearson. If you planned to board at Bloor, Mount Dennis or Weston, use the official TTC alternative below. The replacement bus does not call at those stations.

The same official page lists another full closure for October 3 and 4, followed by later construction weekends. Do not assume this weekend's bus details will remain unchanged for those dates.
Where to board the UP Express replacement bus
Downtown Toronto to Pearson
Go to Union Station Bus Terminal, not the UP Express rail platform in the SkyWalk. The bus terminal is the departure point named in the official notice. Use the station signs and live departure display once inside because bus bays can change.
Union Station is large enough for a wrong entrance to cost useful time. If you arrive by subway, VIA Rail or GO train, follow signs for the bus terminal rather than signs for UP Express. Save your flight terminal and airline check-in deadline before entering the station.
Pearson Terminal 1 to downtown
The replacement bus serves Pearson Airport Terminal 1. Follow airport and staff signs for the GO bus pickup. Do not wait on the elevated UP Express platform for a train.
Pearson Terminal 3 to downtown
Pearson's UP Express guidance places the airport rail station at Terminal 1. From Terminal 3, take the free Terminal Link to Terminal 1. The Terminal Link and the GO replacement bus are separate parts of the journey, so include time to find the train, ride between terminals and reach the bus stop.
Do not confuse Terminal Link with UP Express. Terminal Link remains the airport's inter-terminal connection; it does not travel downtown.
Bloor, Mount Dennis and Weston alternatives
UP Express publishes specific alternatives for each skipped station. These are useful starting routes, not promises about the next departure. Check the TTC trip planner immediately before leaving.

There is a second constraint this weekend: the TTC has closed Line 1 between St Clair and College, with shuttle buses replacing subway service. Bloor-to-Pearson via Line 2 and Kipling avoids that closed segment. Trips toward Union from Mount Dennis or Weston may encounter it, depending on the route and transfer point.
If you only need Weston or Mount Dennis from Pearson
Do not take the direct replacement bus to Union and expect an intermediate stop. At Pearson, compare the TTC route listed above with a taxi or licensed ride service before boarding. A direct bus to Union can carry you well past your destination.
If you only need Bloor from Pearson
The official westbound alternative is Route 900 Airport Express to Kipling and Line 2 east to Dundas West. Bloor GO and Dundas West subway station are connected by a walk, so check the final route to the exact address rather than treating the station names as the same platform.
How much extra time should airport passengers allow?
UP Express normally advertises a 28-minute train trip between Pearson and Union. That number does not apply to the replacement bus. The bus uses roads, may queue at the terminal, and can be delayed by traffic or a busy loading process.
Work backward from the airline's check-in and bag-drop deadline:
- Start with the airline's stated airport arrival time.
- Add the walk from the bus stop to the correct terminal and check-in area.
- Add a traffic and bus-queue buffer that you can afford to lose.
- Add the time from your hotel or home to Union Station Bus Terminal.
- Leave earlier if the booking has checked luggage, mobility needs, children or a separate onward ticket.
There is no responsible universal answer such as "add 20 minutes." A traveler with a flexible domestic booking and hand luggage has a different risk from an international passenger with a fixed bag-drop cutoff.
Tickets, PRESTO and proof of payment
Do not assume that a screenshot of the normal train timetable answers the fare question for your replacement journey. Use the current UP or GO trip result and follow staff instructions at the boarding point.
For GO travel, current Metrolinx guidance says to tap the same PRESTO, credit or Interac debit card at each required point and tap off where instructed. E-tickets must be activated before boarding, and data is required to buy or activate one. Keep the active ticket or payment card available until the trip is complete.
If you already bought an UP ticket and the app does not make the bus entitlement clear, ask UP Express before buying a second fare. The contact page and station staff can resolve the exact ticket product; an old forum answer may describe a different closure.
Luggage, strollers and mobility needs
Replacement buses do not offer the same interior layout as the airport train. Keep medicine, travel documents and valuables in a bag you can control. Avoid packing to the point that you cannot lift or move the luggage when staff direct passengers to a storage area.
Travelers using a mobility device should check the live trip and identify themselves to staff at the boarding point. TTC says Wheel-Trans is available on request for the concurrent Line 1 closure. That does not automatically arrange the airport journey, so confirm each segment rather than relying on a general accessibility label.
Families arriving at Terminal 3 should budget for the Terminal Link transfer before the bus. A stroller, tired child and several bags make that connection slower even when every service is operating normally.
Other Toronto transit closures can affect your backup
This is not an isolated railway change. GO reports Barrie line construction with no service between Downsview Park and Union, plus Kitchener line adjustments. The TTC Line 1 closure affects St Clair through College. A backup that works on an ordinary weekend may therefore include an extra shuttle or transfer.
Before leaving, check:
- the UP Express construction notice for the airport leg;
- the relevant GO line if the journey starts outside Toronto;
- the TTC weekend notice for subway and surface changes;
- the airline app for the flight terminal and check-in deadline; and
- Pearson's flight status for an arrival or departure change.

What to save offline before the trip
- The airline booking, terminal and boarding pass.
- A screenshot of the current UP Express closure notice.
- The address of Union Station Bus Terminal or the Terminal 1 pickup point.
- The TTC alternative for Bloor, Mount Dennis or Weston if that is your real destination.
- A Toronto map covering Union, Kipling, the intermediate station and Pearson.
- The hotel address and a phone number that works without an app login.
- The active ticket or payment method needed for each transit segment.
Offline copies matter because a dead battery, failed login or crowded network should not decide whether you find the airport bus.
