Lufthansa Starlink WiFi is live on one A320neo: what travelers can expect
August 12, 2026. Updated August 21, 2026. Lufthansa Group's first passenger aircraft with the new free Starlink internet service entered operation on August 19. Airbus A320neo D-AINM launched the service on flight LH234 from Frankfurt to Rome. Travelers with a free Travel ID or Miles & More account can use high-speed internet in every cabin when that aircraft operates their flight.
This remains a one-aircraft rollout, not fleetwide availability. Lufthansa still says Starlink cannot yet be checked before a flight. The airline plans to equip up to ten more A320-family aircraft at Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines before the end of 2026, but it has not published their registrations or a dependable route schedule. Most passengers should keep planning for the current FlyNet offer unless the aircraft presents the new "Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi" network.
The practical answer: create or test a Travel ID before boarding, but do not book a flight on the assumption that it will have Starlink. On board, the Wi-Fi network name will identify the new system. Keep essential files and arrival information offline, and use a Roaming eSIM after landing because the aircraft connection does not become mobile data at the destination.
What Lufthansa confirmed after the August 19 first flight
Lufthansa Group announced the firm start date on August 10, then confirmed the completed inaugural flight on August 19. Its first-flight release, launch release and passenger information page establish the current details.

The free offer is broader than Lufthansa's existing free messaging tier. Lufthansa describes normal web access, streaming and cloud-based work on the new system. The airline confirms that the first flight occurred, but it does not publish a minimum passenger speed, VPN guarantee or uptime commitment for D-AINM.
One aircraft does not mean every Lufthansa flight has free full internet
The most important current number is one, not 850. D-AINM is the first live aircraft. Lufthansa says up to ten more A320-family aircraft at Lufthansa and Lufthansa City Airlines are due to receive the system before the end of 2026. The larger 850 figure remains the group target for the end of 2029.
Lufthansa says the next phase will include Lufthansa, SWISS, Austrian Airlines and Brussels Airlines. The wider group program covers all group airlines, but an airline being named in the program does not establish a date for a specific aircraft. SWISS says its exact aircraft and timing are still being planned.
This distinction matters on a connection. A booking sold by Lufthansa can include a flight operated by a partner or another Lufthansa Group airline. The operating airline and assigned aircraft control the onboard connection. Check each segment separately rather than treating a Lufthansa flight number as proof of Starlink.

Can you tell whether your Lufthansa flight will use D-AINM?
Not reliably at booking time. Lufthansa's new Wi-Fi page says passengers cannot yet check the availability of Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi before departure. The airline plans to add a flight-search function later.
The registration D-AINM can help after an aircraft is assigned, but it is not a promise. Airlines substitute aircraft for maintenance, weather and operational reasons. A third-party tracker can show a likely tail number, yet Lufthansa remains the source for the service and the operating aircraft can still change.
Use this sequence:
- Check the operating airline and aircraft information in the booking close to departure.
- Look for a Lufthansa notification or a future official Wi-Fi availability label.
- On board, keep airplane mode on and look for the network named "Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi".
- If the aircraft instead presents FlyNet, use the current FlyNet options rather than assuming Starlink is unavailable because of a login error.
The inaugural route was Frankfurt to Rome as LH234. Lufthansa has not said D-AINM will remain on that flight or published a route list for the rollout. Booking LH234, another city pair or an A320neo type does not prove the assigned aircraft will have Starlink.
Free access requires Travel ID or Miles & More
The new high-speed service is free in Economy, Premium Economy, Business and First, but it is not an anonymous public hotspot. Lufthansa requires a Travel ID or Miles & More login.
A Travel ID is Lufthansa Group's account for booking and digital services. It can optionally be connected to Miles & More, but a traveler does not need elite status to qualify for the announced Wi-Fi benefit. Lufthansa says a Travel ID can also be created on board.
Registering before travel is still safer. Confirm the email address and password while ordinary mobile data or trusted home Wi-Fi is available. A password reset can be awkward behind an onboard captive portal, particularly if the email account requires a code sent to another device or phone number.
The connection supports multiple devices at the same time under Lufthansa's published rules. That does not mean one passenger can distribute the login to a cabin or that every device will perform identically. Use the account for the named traveler and follow the portal instructions.
What travelers can and cannot do on Lufthansa Starlink
Lufthansa presents the new service as high-speed access for browsing, streaming and cloud work. It also sets cabin rules that are stricter than the technical capability.

The call ban applies even if an app can technically place the call. Download meeting notes, tickets, hotel addresses and connection details before boarding. Free Wi-Fi is useful, but it should not be the only copy of anything needed to enter a country, collect baggage or reach accommodation.
How to connect to Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi
Lufthansa publishes four simple steps for an equipped aircraft:
- Switch the device to airplane mode.
- Turn Wi-Fi back on.
- Join "Lufthansa Group Wi-Fi".
- Open a browser and go to
wifi.lufthansa.com, then sign in with Travel ID or Miles & More.
The network name matters. Current aircraft use the FlyNet name and portal. If the new page does not appear automatically, enter the address in a browser. Temporarily pausing a VPN or private relay can help a captive portal load, but turn security tools back on only if the service and work policy support them.
Do not switch cellular service back on in flight. The onboard product is Wi-Fi, not direct satellite service for the phone's SIM or eSIM.
What happens on a Lufthansa aircraft without Starlink
Lufthansa's current FlyNet page remains the relevant fallback during the rollout. It gives Travel ID and Miles & More members free unlimited messaging, including messages and photos, at up to 150 kbit/s on eligible connected aircraft.
Full browsing, streaming and VPN access sits in the paid FlyNet Premium tier. Lufthansa currently lists EUR 6 for a short or medium-haul flight of up to 90 minutes and EUR 8 above 90 minutes. Long-haul Premium starts at EUR 15 for two hours or EUR 25 for a full flight, with Lufthansa noting that pricing can vary by demand and time.
That means "free Lufthansa WiFi" can describe two different benefits during the transition:
- full high-speed internet on a Starlink-equipped aircraft, live first on D-AINM since August 19;
- free messaging on an eligible current FlyNet aircraft.
Check the portal before starting a large upload or stream. The free messaging login is not evidence that the aircraft has Starlink.
Lufthansa Starlink or Roaming eSIM: which connection wins?
They serve different parts of the trip. Lufthansa Starlink is the better fit in the aircraft. A Roaming eSIM is designed for supported terrestrial networks after landing.

Lufthansa wins in the air on an equipped aircraft because the access is included. Roaming eSIM does not replace or connect to airplane Wi-Fi. Its advantage starts on the ground, where a destination plan can carry airport messaging, rail tickets, rideshare, translation and navigation without waiting for public Wi-Fi.

Which route will the first Starlink aircraft fly?
