São Paulo film festival 2026: Mostra tickets and cinema plans

São Paulo's 50th Mostra Internacional de Cinema runs from October 15 to 29, 2026. Choose a few films, check their current screening details and reserve those seats before arranging a route across the city. A festival pass and a confirmed screening booking are different things.
The organizer's October 9 programme announcement lists 391 titles from more than 90 countries. A visitor does not need to turn that into a fifteen-day endurance test. One film you would struggle to see at home, followed by a meal and another nearby screening, can make a more satisfying day than five hurried transfers.
There are two immediate reasons to check the live pages: several passes are marked sold out, and the festival has already published screening changes. An early downloaded timetable is a starting point, not a final itinerary.
Buy an individual seat or use a pass you already hold
The official ticket page lists these prices and conditions:
| Option | Published price or booking rule |
|---|---|
| Individual, Monday to Thursday | R$26 full price; R$13 half price |
| Individual, Friday to Sunday | R$32 full price; R$16 half price |
| Permanente Integral | R$640; still check availability and reserve each screening |
| Permanente Especial, 20-ticket and 40-ticket packages | Marked sold out at the pre-opening check |
The Mostra app and Velox handle advance sales. Same-day purchases depend on availability; cinemas retain a small box-office allocation. Cancellation is permitted until four hours before a screening. Confirm half-price eligibility rather than assuming an overseas student card qualifies.
For two or three films, individual tickets avoid buying an allowance you cannot use. A pass can suit a much longer visit, but owning one does not make a full screening available. Make a shortlist with alternatives before the release time.
Do not build a budget around a sold-out package just because an earlier news story recommends it. Read the current sale page, then compare the screenings you can realistically attend with the cost of buying them individually.
Work out your booking morning in São Paulo time
Individual tickets open four days before each screening at 09:00 local time; pass exchanges open five days ahead. For an October 20 film, that means October 16 for individual sales or October 15 for a pass exchange. These calculated dates do not promise remaining inventory.
Set your reminder to São Paulo's local 09:00, not 09:00 in your home country. If you are travelling overnight, save the film title, cinema and screening date before the flight. You can then find the right listing without rebuilding your plan on an airport connection.
Pick a first choice and one genuinely acceptable alternative. A second screening of the same film may work better than repeatedly refreshing a full session. When a transaction finishes, check the confirmation for the date, room and number of seats; a favourite saved in the app is not a booking.
Check the changes page before travelling to a cinema
The festival's programme alterations page already contains changes for the 2026 edition. One useful example is Saturday, October 17, in Sala 5 at Cinesystem Belas Artes Frei Caneca: *Zi* moves from 18:00 to 18:30, and *Red Rocks* from 20:00 to 20:30. The same listing adds a filmmaker discussion after the 14:00 *Morro* screening.
The page also lists the cancellation of the October 24, 11:00 Cinesala screening of *The Mark of the Jaguar - The Awakening of Fire*. Check your actual booking and the organizer's instructions if a changed screening affects you; do not assume that a different time or venue automatically suits your ticket.
This matters when combining films. A later start can push the finish beyond your next screening, dinner reservation or preferred train home. Keep the current changes page beside your saved schedule and recheck it before leaving accommodation.
Choose a cinema cluster for each day
The official cinema circuit spans several parts of São Paulo. These examples help you start a route; they are not a claim that every pair is next door.
| Area to plan around | Participating examples | How to use it |
|---|---|---|
| Paulista and Augusta | IMS Paulista, CineSesc, Espaço Petrobras de Cinema, Reserva Cultural | Compare exact addresses before combining screenings |
| Consolação and central venues | Cine Belas Artes, Frei Caneca, Cultura Artística | Distinguish the Belas Artes venues and individual rooms |
| Vergueiro | Centro Cultural São Paulo | Build a separate visit around its programme |
| Vila Clementino | Cinemateca Brasileira | Allow a deliberate transfer rather than treating it as a Paulista stop |
Room names matter. “Belas Artes” can refer to the cinema on Rua da Consolação or the separate Frei Caneca venue in the festival list. Save the full venue and room shown on the ticket.
For a first day, choose an afternoon film and a nearby evening option with a meal break between them. Calculate the first film's finish from its runtime, then allow for a discussion, leaving the building and the actual transfer. A ten-minute gap on a timetable rarely leaves room for all of that.
Do not add a distant film solely to make a pass feel worthwhile. Missing the beginning because you crossed the city is a poor saving. Leave a slot open for a recommendation you hear during the festival.
Two films that show why runtime and classification matter
Carlos Saldanha's *100 Dias* is a 116-minute Brazilian fiction film about Amyr Klink's Atlantic rowing crossing. Its listing gives a general-audience classification and notes accessibility resources. The published sessions include October 16 at 19:00 in Solar Sala Petrobras and October 23 at 20:40 in CineSesc.
Quentin Dupieux's *Full Phil* is a 78-minute film about a father and daughter's Paris trip. The festival classifies it for ages 14 and above. Its schedule includes October 16 at 15:40 at CineSesc and October 19 at 16:30 at Cine Belas Artes, Sala 1 Leon Cakoff.
These are examples to investigate, not a ranked “best films” list or a guarantee of tickets. Their different lengths, classifications and venues produce very different afternoons. Read the synopsis and check the current session rather than choosing from a familiar director's name alone.
English subtitles and accessibility are separate checks
An English title on the website does not establish that the screening has English subtitles. Nor does a film's country, cast or international-festival history confirm the language version being projected. If you do not understand Portuguese, ask about the specific screening before buying.
The festival's accessibility guidance describes MLoad resources for selected films: audio description, Libras and closed captions. Download the app and the required film resource before leaving. Synchronisation uses the phone's microphone; audio-description users should bring headphones.
That provision is not an English-translation service or evidence that every film has every resource. Physical access to a cinema and its individual room is another question. Confirm step-free entry, seating and any assistance directly for the venue you have chosen.
Families should start with the Mostrinha selection, then check each film's classification and screening conditions. The name of the strand does not remove the need to choose for your child's age, language and attention span. Our Brazil with kids guide covers the wider trip.
Plan the last film around the journey home
São Paulo Metrô's September 25 announcement extends experimental overnight operation from Saturday into Sunday through January 31, 2027, on lines 1-Blue, 2-Green, 3-Red and 15-Silver.
That does not make every rail line a 24-hour service, and it does not cover every night of the festival. Check your entire return journey, including transfers to other operators and the final walk or ride to accommodation. The station-hours page gives transfer and station conditions; its older September trial reference should not override the later extension announcement.
Add the film's runtime to its current start time before deciding on a return. Leave a margin for a delayed start or a discussion you want to stay for. If your route depends on a late connection, choose an earlier screening or arrange another journey rather than assuming that entering one open station gets you all the way home.
Keep the app ready without spending the day on your phone
Save a short watchlist in the Mostra app, then keep confirmed bookings separate from films you merely hope to see. Store the full cinema address, room and date with each reservation. Recheck the live listing before setting off; screenshots cannot show a later programme change.
The Central da Mostra information desk is at Conjunto Nacional, Avenida Paulista 2073. During October 15-29, its published hours are 11:00-21:00 Monday to Saturday and 11:00-20:00 Sunday. It can be a useful information stop, but do not confuse it with the box office for every participating cinema.
Charge your phone between screenings, keep your accommodation address available offline and use a current map for transfers. Once seated, put the phone away. Having a clear plan should leave more attention for the film, not more notifications during it.
A separate data allowance for your Brazil visit
OpenSim can suit visitors who want to budget mobile data separately for bookings, maps and messages. Its Brazil catalog listed a 5 GB, 30-day plan at US$16.64, with top-up support, at the pre-opening check. Confirm the current selected plan on the Brazil eSIM page.
If your home plan already includes enough Brazil roaming at no extra charge, keeping that allowance may be simpler. An eSIM does not reserve cinema seats, guarantee payment acceptance or provide a local phone number unless the selected package explicitly includes one.
Check phone compatibility and installation timing before buying. The travel data calculator helps distinguish a week of ticket checks from a trip with frequent video uploads. Keep essential booking details offline whichever connection you choose.
Sources and screening updates
The linked Mostra pages and Metrô announcement were checked before the October 15 opening. Ticket inventory can change, and the organizer is already revising some sessions. Check your selected film and the alterations page again on the day you attend; follow the ticket issuer's instructions for a cancelled or moved screening.
