Trains beside the covered platforms at Manchester Airport station in January 2018

Overnight engineering work changes selected TransPennine Express services at Manchester Airport from November 9 to 13, 2026. Replacement buses run between the airport and Manchester Victoria via Manchester Piccadilly. This is not an all-day closure of every airport train: check your dated journey, including its bus leg, before relying on it for a flight.

The National Rail notice identifies overnight work between Manchester Airport and Piccadilly. A booking made earlier may no longer describe the journey you will take. Check again before leaving, especially for a departure just after midnight.

Which trains change on November 9-13?

The TransPennine Express engineering calendar lists these changes. Times are local UK time; the first column gives the service's original departure date.

DatesOriginal serviceRevised arrangement
Monday 9 to Thursday 1223:19 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester AirportEnds at Manchester Victoria
Tuesday 10 to Thursday 1201:30 York to Manchester AirportEnds at Manchester Victoria
Tuesday 10 to Friday 1300:18 Liverpool Lime Street to Manchester AirportEnds at Manchester Victoria
Tuesday 10 to Friday 1300:38 Manchester Airport to YorkStarts at Victoria at 01:12
Tuesday 10 to Friday 1302:28 Manchester Airport to YorkStarts at Piccadilly at 02:44
Tuesday 10 to Friday 1304:07 Manchester Airport to ScarboroughStarts at Victoria at 04:30
Tuesday 10 to Friday 1304:28 Manchester Airport to Redcar CentralStarts at Piccadilly at 04:52

The replacement-bus timetable determines when to leave the airport or reach it. A revised train departure at Victoria is not a bus departure from the airport. Open the full itinerary rather than copying that time into your alarm.

After midnight, use the next calendar date

If your flight lands on Monday evening, a train at 00:38 belongs to Tuesday, November 10. Search for that date, not Monday, November 9. Likewise, the 23:19 departure on Thursday is a Thursday service even if part of your journey takes place on Friday.

Save the itinerary with every interchange visible. Check whether your onward train leaves from Victoria or Piccadilly; those are different city-centre stations. Do not go to Piccadilly simply because that was the connection you used on a previous trip.

Where do the replacement buses leave?

TPE's replacement-service guidance directs passengers to current station signs and its station-facilities information. Ask staff which vehicle serves your connection and confirm the destination displayed on the bus.

Do not rely on an old photograph, a general airport bus pin or another passenger's remembered stand. Replacement vehicles use designated stops and cannot add an unscheduled stop on request. Keep your valid rail ticket ready; a rail replacement is not a free public bus for anyone waiting nearby.

The notice does not supply one universal bus journey time. Road conditions, boarding and the temporary timetable matter. Check the planned arrival of the complete journey, not the normal train's usual running time.

Will the connection get you to your flight in time?

Work backward from your airline's check-in, bag-drop and gate deadlines. Then add the journey from the airport transport interchange to your terminal. A bus arriving at The Station is not the same as reaching the check-in desk.

The airport's current station guide gives an approximate ten-minute walk to Terminal 2 and five minutes to Terminal 3. These are planning estimates, not a guarantee for someone carrying several bags, using assistance or finding an unfamiliar route. Follow current terminal signs.

If the amended itinerary leaves no usable buffer, compare an earlier journey, an airport-area overnight stay or a separately arranged transfer before travel day. Check the cost, terminal access and cancellation terms. Do not wait until the last connection has gone to decide what you can afford.

Local bus, tram or coach: check the actual alternative

The airport's bus page confirms a 24-hour city-centre bus connection and services at The Station. That does not mean every listed route runs all night. Use the current Bee Network timetable for your stop, direction and date; an ordinary bus may need its own ticket.

The airport tram guide links to Bee Network updates and first/last tram information. Do not assume the tram operates at the same overnight hours as a replacement bus. Its October 19 to November 1 improvement-work notice describes a different, completed period, not these November 9-13 rail changes.

For longer journeys, scheduled coaches also use The Station. Check the dated departure, luggage allowance and separate booking. A scheduled coach ticket and an operator-provided replacement-bus journey are different arrangements.

Wheelchairs, assistance and luggage

National Rail's replacement-transport guidance explains that vehicle facilities vary. Do not assume a coach has the same boarding access, luggage space or toilet facilities as your train. Non-folding bicycles cannot travel on replacement buses or coaches; assistance dogs are allowed.

If you need accessible transport, contact TPE's Passenger Assist team before travel and describe your wheelchair or mobility scooter, luggage and connection. Its guidance provides for suitable alternatives when the planned vehicle cannot accommodate a passenger. Confirm the arrangement rather than treating the general policy as a vehicle reservation.

Rail assistance and help inside the airport need to meet at a practical handover point. Use the airport's accessible-transport information alongside your airline's assistance arrangements. Avoid a plan that depends on standing in a long queue if that is difficult for you.

What if your flight is late and you miss your booked train?

TPE's Airport Advance terms describe a flight-delay concession, normally allowing onward travel up to three hours after the booked train, subject to its conditions. The ticket must be endorsed at the station ticket office or information point before travel. The terms also address the next service when it falls outside that window and require enough time between the scheduled flight arrival and original train.

Check the terms for your actual ticket and ask how they apply to the amended itinerary. Do not assume any Advance ticket lets you board any operator, travel earlier or obtain a reserved seat on a later train. Keep your flight details, rail ticket and booking confirmation available.

If a changed journey is unsuitable, contact the operator or retailer before paying for another transfer. Keep receipts and written advice, but do not assume a taxi you arrange yourself will automatically be reimbursed.

Apps and mobile data for the interchange

Use the National Rail Journey Planner for the complete dated journey and the TPExpress app for operator information. The Bee Network app is useful when comparing local buses or trams. Save the issued rail ticket, replacement-bus instructions, terminal and accommodation address offline before setting out.

International visitors who need a separate data allowance can compare OpenSim United Kingdom plans. On November 7, the public catalog listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3, both with top-up support. The smaller allowance can suit checking updates and messaging during a short visit without buying a month-long plan. Confirm the selected package's current terms.

If your existing plan already includes enough UK data, another purchase may be unnecessary. Mobile data helps you read updates; it cannot guarantee the connection, reserve a replacement bus or make a rail ticket valid on another service.

Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing. For the visit itself, see the Manchester Christmas markets guide or the United Kingdom family guide.

Sources and updates

National Rail and TransPennine Express provide the dated service changes and replacement-transport rules. Manchester Airport provides terminal access and alternative-transport information; the operator's ticket terms govern flight-delay flexibility. Changes to the affected trains, bus arrangements or assistance provision will trigger an update, as will confirmation of the operating timetable after November 13.
