Montreux Christmas market 2026: Santa, tickets and trains

Montreux Riviera Noël runs from November 20 to December 24, 2026. You can walk the lakeside market and watch Flying Santa without an admission ticket. Meeting Santa at Rochers-de-Naye is a separate mountain trip: book the special train-and-visit package, not an ordinary rail ticket.
That distinction matters when planning a family day from Geneva or Lausanne. You can keep the visit to the waterfront, or reserve much of the day for the mountain and return for the lights. Neither version requires trying to visit every attraction.
The organizer announced its current RailAway offer on October 1, following the September opening of Santa's House bookings. Check your preferred date and the full family cost before committing to accommodation.
Montreux Christmas market dates and opening hours
The official market website publishes these hours for artisans and merchants:
| Day | Craft and shopping stalls |
|---|---|
| Monday to Wednesday | 11:00-21:00 |
| Thursday and Friday | 11:00-22:00 |
| Saturday | 10:00-22:00 |
| Sunday | 10:00-20:00 |
| December 24 | 11:00-17:00 |
Restaurant hours normally extend later, but December 24 has the earlier finish. Do not plan a Christmas Day market visit: this edition ends on Christmas Eve.
The visitor FAQ confirms that the quays and street entertainment are free; specific attractions such as the Ferris wheel and Santa's House are paid. It recommends quieter weekdays or a Saturday morning for easier movement. With a stroller, arriving before the afternoon rush is the more practical choice.
Flying Santa: when to watch the free show
The Flying Santa programme lists the waterfront performances separately from mountain visits:
| Date pattern | Published flight times |
|---|---|
| Monday to Friday | 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 |
| Weekends | 16:00, 17:00, 18:00 and 19:00 |
| December 22 and 23 | Additional 16:00 performance |
| December 24 | 16:00 and 17:00 only |
The viewing area is along the quays between the Freddie Mercury statue and the Ferris wheel. Choose a place where children can see without blocking the walking route, then agree on a meeting point in case your group separates.
Rain does not automatically cancel the show, but storms or strong winds can. Check the organizer's live updates before making the performance the sole reason for a long journey.
Santa's House needs its own reservation
MOB's booking guidance says the special offer includes the return train journey, entry to Santa's House and an outward seat reservation. An ordinary Montreux-Rochers-de-Naye transport ticket does not include admission.
Choose the discount category you genuinely qualify for. A cheaper category is not a promotional fare anyone can select; MOB warns that passengers using an incorrect reduction can be refused boarding.
The 2026 offer operates November 20-December 24, Wednesday to Sunday, plus December 7, 8, 21 and 22. A Monday market visit therefore does not automatically include an operating Santa train.
Published Santa's House package prices
| Passenger category | Published price |
|---|---|
| Adult, 16 and over | CHF 49 |
| Adult with Half Fare Travelcard or Swiss Half Fare Card | CHF 39 |
| Adult with GA, qualifying day pass or Swiss Travel Pass | CHF 20 |
| Child from 6, below the adult category | CHF 19 |
| Child with qualifying day pass or GA | CHF 10 |
| Under 6, outward seat included | CHF 10 |
| Under 6, no outward seat | CHF 0 |
Two full-fare adults and two children in the CHF 19 category total CHF 136. That is a package calculation, not the cost of the entire day: add your journey to Montreux, food and any other purchases.
The current offer does not recommend the trip for children under three. Confirm suitability and the right child category with MOB before booking, particularly if your party has infants or specific support needs.
Allow enough time for the mountain and the return train
The market's Santa's House page gives an approximate 55-minute train journey each way. MOB's visit-duration advice allows around 1.5 hours on site on weekdays and up to three hours at weekends or on public holidays, excluding travel.
Using those estimates, the mountain outing takes roughly 3 hours 20 minutes to 4 hours 50 minutes, before boarding buffers or waiting for a return train. Treat it as a substantial part of the day.
MOB's travel-document instructions currently specify platform 8 at Montreux and arrival at least 15 minutes before departure. Follow your final documents and station signs if the boarding arrangement changes. The CHF 0 shown on that information page is not the price of an adult Santa package.
For the descent, MOB does not offer a seat reservation. Return travel is included, but you should reach the boarding platform well before the service you want. Leave room before an onward connection rather than assuming a specific seat on a specific descent.
Strollers and accessibility: check both parts of the visit
The waterfront and the mountain have different constraints. Under MOB's stroller policy, you must load a stroller into the front carriage yourself. It cannot go inside Santa's House and must be left in an unsupervised area at the tunnel entrance.
That may make the free lakeside visit a better fit for a family that depends on its stroller throughout the day. Do not assume that bringing one on the train means you can use it through the attraction.
The market accessibility page identifies adapted toilets, mapped facilities and a quieter Info Point. For a wheelchair user planning the mountain excursion, confirm boarding assistance, mobility-device dimensions and the full route with MOB before paying. A general accessibility statement is not enough to establish an individual journey's arrangements.
Getting to Montreux and checking the rail offer
The station is about 200 metres from the market according to the organizer. Use SBB Mobile to compare your actual journey, keep tickets available and receive notices about changes. Check the final train home before choosing a late meal or performance.
The organizer's October 1 RailAway announcement advertises up to 50% off public-transport travel, subject to availability, for November 20-December 24. It also describes a discounted souvenir-mug, hot-drink and pretzel offer. Follow its booking link and compare the quote for your route, passengers and existing travelcards.
Do not assume every journey gets the maximum reduction, or that this rail promotion includes mountain admission. Check the product you are buying and save its conditions.
Some transport text on the market website still lists special Fribourg trains from December 2025. Those are not a confirmed 2026 timetable. Use the current journey planner and any subsequently published event notice instead.
A realistic day plan for families and short stays
Choose between these two approaches:
| Visit | Suggested order |
|---|---|
| Waterfront only | Arrive before the busiest afternoon period, browse, take a food break and choose one Flying Santa performance before returning |
| Mountain and waterfront | Use your reserved ascent as the fixed appointment, allow the full visit and return buffer, then decide how much market time everyone still wants |
With only three or four days in Switzerland, compare the transfer time before adding Montreux to several distant stops. A market evening is more enjoyable when it is not followed by a rushed cross-country connection. An overnight stay can buy flexibility, but compare that cost with returning to the base you already have.
Set a food and shopping budget before browsing. The website lists options including fondue, raclette and rösti; check current menus and dietary requirements directly rather than choosing from an old review's "best stall" list. Our Switzerland with kids guide covers the wider trip without treating every day as an event day.
Payments, weather and changes of plan
The market FAQ describes payments by card or Twint, with American Express excluded. Cash exceptions include restaurants and New Bretzel; visitors with cash can load a QR payment card at the Info Point. Cups carry a CHF 2 deposit, and card refunds can take four to five working days. Locate toilets and changing facilities on the official interactive map before you need them.
For the mountain, MOB's weather policy distinguishes fog or rain from conditions that stop the railway. If the line cannot operate because of severe weather, MOB says it will email passengers and refund tickets; an alternative date is subject to availability. That does not mean every poor-weather forecast entitles you to cancel free of charge.
Check the cancellation terms attached to your booking before changing plans. Pack for the conditions at the mountain as well as by the lake, and check the local forecast close to travel. A seasonal photograph is not evidence of snow on your date.
Mobile data for tickets, maps and family messages
Save the ascent reservation, rail tickets, accommodation address and meeting point offline. Keep booking emails accessible so you can see operator updates, and carry a charged battery for a long day away from your room.
For visitors who need a separate Swiss allowance, OpenSim Switzerland plans provide a prepaid option. On October 17, the public catalog listed a 3 GB, 15-day plan for USD 3, with top-up supported for that plan. Its practical advantage is a defined data allowance for the stay and the option to top up an eligible plan if your use runs higher than expected.
It does not include transport, attraction entry or payment-card access, and it cannot guarantee a signal in a crowd. Check whether your existing plan already covers Switzerland before buying anything else.
Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and read the installation timing guide before leaving home.
Sources and updates
Market and operator information was checked on October 17, 2026. Recheck the organizer's programme and your MOB travel documents before departure; update your plan if the timetable, booking conditions or weather notice changes. This guide covers the 2026 edition ending December 24.
