Morelia Film Festival 2026: tickets, passes and travel

The 24th Morelia International Film Festival, or FICM, runs October 16-25, 2026. It is already underway. Choose individual screenings from the current programme, confirm the venue and obtain the relevant ticket: buying an accreditation does not guarantee a seat at a film you want to see.
The festival's current website reports its October 16 opening with Jonás Cuarón's *Campeón gabacho*. For a visitor arriving this weekend, the useful question is what remains available during your stay, not whether you can recreate opening night.
Before committing to a journey, also read the regional travel advice below. A festival taking place does not remove the security considerations for Morelia, Michoacán or the route you would use to reach it.
How do FICM ticket releases work?
The 2026 Spanish ticket guide sets out these rules:
| Decision | Published arrangement |
|---|---|
| Presale | Opens at 10:00 two days before each screening |
| Day-of release | More tickets are released at 10:00, even if presale showed sold out |
| Standard ticket | MXN 100 |
| VIP ticket | MXN 190 |
| Seating | Unnumbered, assigned as visitors enter |
For an October 19 screening, the presale date is October 17. Check the time in Morelia rather than using your home time zone.
Be seated five minutes before the screening. After last-minute admission begins, a ticket does not guarantee a place if you are not seated. Missed screenings do not qualify for exchanges or refunds.
Use the programme's purchase link, Cinépolis website or app, or the listed box offices and kiosks. Teatro Melchor Ocampo tickets must be bought at the Cinépolis Morelia Centro box office. Free Cinépolis screenings also require a ticket collected at the box office on the day.
Treat a release as an opportunity to try, not a guarantee of availability. Have another film in mind before the booking window opens.
Is accreditation worth buying for your stay?
The official accreditation guide describes two packages:
| Price | Ticket redemptions |
|---|---|
| MXN 600 | Six |
| MXN 1,000 | Eleven |
Redemptions depend on availability. The pass also permits access to a last-minute line for screenings with space; that is not a reserved seat. It excludes private parties, red carpets, opening and closing ceremonies, press access and other restricted events.
Online purchase provides a QR code, confirmation email, FICM folio and registration link. Complete registration before collection. The listed collection office is Santiago Tapia 444, next to Cinépolis Morelia Centro, October 13-24, 10:00-13:30 and 15:00-18:00.
At MXN 100 per standard screening, six tickets equal MXN 600; eleven cost MXN 1,100. The larger pass saves MXN 100 if you redeem all eleven against those screenings. Compare only films you can realistically attend.
Do not buy the larger package solely to solve a sold-out screening. Confirm its terms and your likely schedule first.
What to do when a booking fails
Keep a record of the film, date, venue, purchase channel and any error or payment confirmation. Before trying another payment, check whether the first attempt produced a ticket or charge. Ask the official box office to resolve an unclear transaction rather than sending payment to someone offering seats in a comment thread.
Distinguish a page that has not opened sales from a failed checkout and a confirmed sold-out session. They call for different responses. If your screening has no usable ticket, look for another programme entry or an official later release rather than treating a pass receipt as admission.
Leave time to resolve ticket problems during the day. Building your entire trip around one difficult booking makes every delay more consequential; a backup film and an uncommitted meal break give you more room to adapt.
Free screenings are part of the programme
The festival published its free-screening schedule on October 16. A few examples for planning are:
| Date | Film or programme | Venue and listed start |
|---|---|---|
| October 17 | *El Conformista* | Cinépolis Centro, Sala 5, 15:00 |
| October 18 | *La ilusión viaja en tranvía* | Cinépolis Centro, Sala 5, 13:00 |
| October 18 | Animation short-film programme 1 | Museo Regional Michoacano, 14:30 |
| October 19 | *La sal de la tierra* | Cinépolis Centro, Sala 5, 13:00 |
Check the linked schedule again before setting out. A free listing establishes the admission price, not that a seat remains. Confirm the entry process for the specific venue, particularly when moving between a cinema and a museum screening.
These sessions can make a shorter visit worthwhile without purchasing a large accreditation package. Choose films that interest you rather than collecting as many screenings as possible.
Build a film day around the venues
The 2026 programme announcement includes Mexican features, shorts and documentaries alongside international premieres and retrospective programmes. Morelia venues include Cinépolis Morelia Centro, Cinépolis VIP Las Américas, Teatro Mariano Matamoros, Teatro Melchor Ocampo, Museo Regional de Michoacán and Centro Cultural Clavijero.
Pátzcuaro's Teatro Emperador Caltzontzin is a separate location, not another room in Morelia. Do not add a session there between two city screenings. Decide whether that journey fits the current travel advice before choosing it.
Use the live programme to check the day, room and running time. Read the individual film entry for language, subtitles and classification rather than assuming an English title means an English-language presentation.
For a first day, one afternoon film and one evening film leave room to collect accreditation, find entrances and eat. Once you know how transfers work for your party, you can decide whether more screenings are practical. Do not schedule only the film's runtime between consecutive start times; leaving the room and reaching the next entrance also take time.
The festival's city venue directory places Cinépolis Morelia Centro on Santiago Tapia and Teatro Mariano Matamoros at Abasolo 72. Las Américas is on Periférico Paseo de la República, away from that central cluster. Save the exact venue name and address; a generic "Cinépolis" destination is not enough.
Airport arrival and city transfers
For an airport arrival, consult the operator's Morelia ground-transport directory, which lists arrival-hall providers. Arrange the destination and fare through an official provider or your accommodation. Do not rely on an old forum fare as a current quote.
Uber lists Morelia among its operating cities. Check the live app for the actual pickup point, vehicle availability and price. City availability does not establish unrestricted pickup access inside an airport or bus terminal, nor a guaranteed car after a late screening.
Plan the return from Las Américas or a late cinema session before entering the auditorium. Save your accommodation's address and contact details. If a journey estimate changes, protect the screening arrival deadline rather than assuming the cinema will hold your seat.
Check the Michoacán travel advice before booking
The US State Department's Mexico advisory places Michoacán in its Level 4: Do not travel category. It describes limited routes permitted for US government employees to Morelia and strongly advises US citizens to follow employee restrictions. Those exceptions do not remove the state's warning or establish that every journey is suitable.
The UK FCDO regional advice advises against all but essential travel to most of Michoacán, with specified exceptions for Morelia, Pátzcuaro and named access roads. Read the full route conditions and your own government's advice, and check insurance terms before paying for travel.
This guide is not a safety clearance. A screening ticket, festival accreditation or functioning navigation app does not change an advisory. If your route does not fit the advice you must follow, consider the festival's announced online programme instead and check its title availability and viewing conditions.
Keep tickets, maps and messages usable
Set reminders for booking windows in Morelia's local time. Save the official programme and box-office links rather than a reseller's page. Keep confirmation emails available offline, but follow the ticket issuer's instructions for any code that must load live.
For visitors whose home plan charges extra for Mexico data, OpenSim's Mexico plans provide a separate allowance for programme checks, city navigation and contacting accommodation. The public catalog checked October 17 lists a fixed 3GB, 15-day plan at USD 8.98, with top-up support. Check the current checkout total and plan terms.
That can be more useful than searching for Wi-Fi each time a booking window opens or a transfer changes. If your existing plan already includes enough Mexico data, another plan may be unnecessary. Mobile data cannot fix the festival's ticket system, reserve a seat or guarantee coverage in a venue.
Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility and review installation timing before departure. For a wider family trip, keep the Mexico with kids guide separate from this event's ticket and travel decisions.
