Transport for Ireland expects more than 275,000 visitors across the three days. The hard part is not finding enough to see. It is reaching a temporary field site through a traffic system that deliberately overrides the route your map app may suggest.
The short answer: buy a day-specific ticket before traveling, save the barcode offline, and choose either the official train-and-shuttle route or the colored driving route assigned to your direction. Do not let a satnav reroute you near Screggan. Wear footwear that can handle stubble, grass and mud, and photograph your car-park sign before walking away.

How to choose your Ploughing day
The exhibition arena, competition fields, machinery, livestock areas, food courts and stage program operate across all three days. There is no universal best day.
Tuesday suits visitors who want to attend early in the event and can travel on a working day. Wednesday is the middle-day choice. Thursday works for visitors who need the last available date, but it is not a clearance day with relaxed entry rules. The same ticket, traffic and closing-time discipline still applies.
Start with the current competitor lists if watching a specific ploughing class matters. The NPA has published separate competitor documents for September 15, 16 and 17. Then check the full program when the map and timetable are finalized. Do not choose a day from a previous year's running order.
Buy the ticket before you travel
NPA says tickets must be bought in advance to guarantee entry. Gate sales may be available only if the event has not sold out, and the gate price is higher. A long journey to Offaly is too much risk for a possible walk-up ticket.
After purchase:
- Confirm that the ticket date matches the day you intend to travel.
- Save the barcode as a screenshot and keep the confirmation email offline.
- Keep the original ticket link because a screenshot is a backup, not a replacement for the organizer's record.
- Check whether a student, senior, school-group, carer or child rule applies on the current 2026 ticket page.
- Avoid an unofficial social-media seller when the ticket cannot be transferred through the organizer's system.
A rail reservation or hotel booking does not guarantee event entry.
Driving: use the colored traffic plan, not a satnav shortcut
The 2026 traffic management plan assigns eight approaches according to where traffic originates:

Read the route description for your actual starting direction. The color is not a parking preference. It guides vehicles through managed roads to a corresponding parking area.
Close to the site, follow Garda and steward signs even when Google Maps, Apple Maps or Waze proposes a quicker turn. Temporary one-way roads and closures may not appear in the saved route. Transport for Ireland recommends allowing at least twice the normal journey time.
Parking decisions that catch first-time visitors
Parking is free, but it is temporary field parking. There is no promise of a hard surface. Wet weather can turn a normal walk into a slow, muddy return, especially with a pushchair or limited mobility.
Before leaving the vehicle:
- photograph the colored sign and its animal or symbol;
- save a map pin, but treat the photograph as the more reliable identifier;
- note which pedestrian entrance you used;
- move medication, rainwear and anything needed by children into the day bag; and
- check the return route posted for that car park, because departure traffic may differ from arrival.
The temporary event car parks do not provide EV charging. Charge before joining the managed approach and identify a practical charger outside the event traffic area for the return journey.
Train and shuttle bus from Dublin or elsewhere
The public-transport plan uses Tullamore and Portarlington railway stations, followed by a Bus Eireann shuttle. Irish Rail sells combined rail-and-shuttle products, while Expressway sells shuttle-only tickets.
There is one important date check. The current Transport for Ireland event page confirms the 2026 event and the two station links, but the timetable document linked in the shuttle section was still labeled 2025 when this guide was checked. Do not copy those times into a 2026 itinerary.
Use this sequence:
- Open the Transport for Ireland event page and confirm that the timetable itself says 2026.
- Search Irish Rail for the event product, not only an ordinary station ticket.
- If you already have rail travel, check Expressway for the shuttle-only option.
- Match the return shuttle to a train you can realistically reach after walking out of the arena.
- Save both tickets and the station name offline.
Tullamore may look closer, but the useful choice depends on train inventory and the confirmed shuttle. Portarlington can be a valid alternative. Do not book one station and assume you can board the other station's shuttle.
A realistic one-day plan
Before 09:00: arrive and orient yourself
Photograph the car-park marker or confirm the shuttle return point. At the entrance, pick up the current site map. Mark the competition fields, medical centre, toilets, food courts and your exit before moving into the exhibition lanes.
09:00 to 10:30: start with a distant area
The arena covers a large outdoor site. Begin with the machinery, livestock or exhibition area furthest from the entrance you plan to use later. This avoids crossing the same ground several times.
10:30 to 14:30: watch the competition deliberately
Ploughing is the reason the event exists, yet it is easy to spend the day among stands and miss it. Choose a competition period and allow walking time to the fields. Check the day-specific class list rather than expecting every category every day.
14:30 to 16:30: food, demonstrations and selected stands
Pick a short list instead of trying to cover every exhibitor. Use the map to group nearby stops. With children, schedule food and the playground before everyone is tired and far from the exit.
16:30 onward: start the exit before it becomes urgent
The arena closes at 18:00. The walk to a field car park, a shuttle queue and managed outbound traffic all add time. Leave enough margin for the booked train or the rest of a long drive.
What to wear and pack
This is an outdoor agricultural event in September, not a paved exhibition hall. Check Met Eireann on the morning of travel and pack for the field condition as well as the forecast.
Wear waterproof footwear with grip. Bring a light waterproof layer, warm mid-layer, refillable water bottle if current entry rules allow it, portable battery, essential medication and a small bag for muddy footwear. Keep the day bag light because you may carry it over uneven ground for hours.
Save these items before leaving reliable Wi-Fi:
- event ticket barcode;
- 2026 site and traffic maps;
- colored route description;
- rail and shuttle tickets;
- accommodation address;
- car-park photograph; and
- a family meeting point and contact number.
Children, accessibility and medical help
The official leaflet lists baby changing, picnic areas, food courts, a playground, a medical centre and wheelchair parking. Transport for Ireland lists designated disability parking, tracked internal roadways and accessible toilets. An official government disability parking permit must be visible so stewards can direct the vehicle correctly.
Those facilities do not turn a field into level city pavement. Families using a pushchair and visitors using mobility aids should check the weather and current ground notice, arrive before the busiest period and ask staff for the most practical entrance. Do not assume every shortcut between fields is tracked.
For children, write an adult contact number on the safety wristband if the event distributes them in 2026. Photograph the child's clothing that morning and agree on a staffed meeting point. Mobile service can be busy or a phone can go flat, so the plan should work without a call.

Map apps are useful before the managed traffic zone and for the wider trip. Near Screggan, event signs and Garda directions outrank the app.
Mobile data at the Ploughing
Mobile data helps with ticket retrieval, weather warnings, train changes, traffic notices and the route after leaving the managed roads. It does not guarantee capacity inside a crowd of tens of thousands, and it cannot override the event traffic plan.
The live Roaming eSIM catalog was checked on August 20, 2026 and returned 16 Ireland packages. Depending on the selected package, listed Irish networks included 3, eir and Vodafone. That package-level disclosure is more useful than assuming every plan uses every network.
