Tokyo Game Show 2026 guide: tickets, trains, queues and cosplay

Tokyo Game Show 2026 runs from Thursday, September 17 through Monday, September 21 in Chiba. Tourists cannot simply pick any of those five days. September 17 and 18 are business days, while ordinary visitors can buy tickets for September 19, 20 or 21.
For most international visitors, one public day is enough only when the plan has priorities. Decide whether you care most about playable demos, merchandise, stages, cosplay or the Family Game Park. Then buy the correct date before traveling. Tokyo Game Show will not sell public tickets at Makuhari Messe on the day.
The short answer: buy a date-specific public-day ticket in advance, take the JR Keiyo Line to Kaihin-Makuhari, arrive before your first priority rather than near closing time, and save the QR ticket, venue map and return route offline. A normal one-day ticket costs JPY 3,000. Fast entry helps only if you reach its priority lane by 09:00.
This guide was checked at 01:50 Japan Standard Time on August 21, 2026. Ticket inventory, exhibitor activities, demo reservations, stage access and rail service can change before September.
Tokyo Game Show 2026 at a glance
| Date | Who can attend | Published hours | Best fit |
|---|---|---|---|
| Thursday, September 17 | Approved trade visitors | 10:00 to 17:00 | Meetings and industry work |
| Friday, September 18 | Approved trade visitors | 10:00 to 17:00 | Meetings and industry work |
| Saturday, September 19 | Public ticket holders | 09:30 to 17:00 | First public day and a full schedule |
| Sunday, September 20 | Public ticket holders | 09:30 to 17:00 | Full public day and family program |
| Monday, September 21 | Public ticket holders | 09:30 to 16:00 | Final public day with an earlier finish |
The organizer may open public days up to 30 minutes early when conditions require it. Monday is a Japanese public holiday, not a quiet working Monday. Do not choose it on the assumption that local attendance will be low.
Which Tokyo Game Show ticket should you buy?
| Ticket | Published price | What it covers | Main catch |
|---|---|---|---|
| One-Day Ticket | JPY 3,000 | Normal entry on one selected public day | Date-specific, no venue sale and no refund for a date mistake |
| Fast Ticket | JPY 6,000 | One public day, priority entry and merchandise | The priority lane closes at 09:00; named-ticket and photo-ID rules apply |
| Premium Ticket | JPY 30,000 | All three public days, Fast benefits and lounge access | Best only when you will use all three days; ID and named-holder rules apply |
| Special Discount Ticket | JPY 1,500 | One public day for eligible certificate holders | Original eligibility evidence is checked and purchase uses the specified route |
| Standard child admission | Free | Main public event for elementary-school-age children and younger | Fast or Premium benefits still require the corresponding child ticket |
The current overseas ticket section links normal one-day buyers to a Trip.com digital ticket. It instructs visitors to present the QR code on a phone. Follow the seller linked from the official public ticket page, not an advertisement or resale listing that happens to appear in search.
Fast Ticket is not an all-day queue pass. It changes the opening entry order. The official rules tell Fast holders to join a designated priority lane by 09:00. After that lane is removed, the holder enters with the normal queue and receives no refund for missing the priority window.
Premium makes sense when Tokyo Game Show is the center of the Japan trip and all three public days are useful. For a normal first visit, the one-day ticket leaves JPY 27,000 for the rest of the trip. Buy Fast only when being inside at opening materially affects a demo, stage or merchandise priority.
Saturday, Sunday or Monday?
Saturday: choose it for the first public release window
Saturday is the first day ordinary visitors enter. It works when an exhibitor has announced a Saturday-only activity or when you need a full 17:00 finish. It can also concentrate demand from visitors who instinctively choose the first public day.
Sunday: choose it for a full day with the family program
Sunday has the same published hours as Saturday. The Family Game Park schedule includes child-focused stages and greetings, but its location is separate from the main halls. A family trying to cover both venues should plan the transfer rather than treating the park as another room inside Makuhari Messe.
Monday: choose it for a specific final-day reason
Monday finishes at 16:00, and first entry closes at 15:00. It is useful when a Monday stage, workshop or exhibitor appearance matters. It is a poor choice for a casual late afternoon visit. Because it is a public holiday, the weekday label does not promise lighter crowds.
The organizer's exhibitor and stage information should settle the date. If the exact demo or appearance you want has not published a 2026 process, do not assume a 2025 numbered-ticket system will return unchanged.
A one-day plan that survives the queues
Tokyo Game Show is too large for an efficient improvised lap. Start with three priorities and one substitute for each.
- Before travel: confirm the ticket date, seller instructions and the official exhibitor page.
- The night before: save the QR ticket, venue map, priority booth locations and return route offline.
- At entry: use the entrance that fits the first priority and your ticket. Do not cross to another hall group without checking the morning restriction.
- First hour: go to the demo, merchandise or stage that would be hardest to replace later.
- Midday: use a lower-priority hall, food break or scheduled stage while popular queues are capped.
- Afternoon: return to a previously restricted area only after staff reopen it, then leave enough time for the station crowd.
Past visitor reports describe long waits and demo slots disappearing early. Those reports are useful for planning margin, but they are not a 2026 promise. Exhibitors control their own demo and stage processes. Check the current booth announcement and follow staff directions on the day.
Hall 1-8 or Hall 9-11 matters before 10:00
Public visitors have a general entrance by Halls 1-8 at West Plaza and another by Halls 9-11 on the first floor of Hall 10. After opening, visitors may move from Halls 1-8 toward Halls 9-11. Movement in the other direction is restricted until 10:00.
That asymmetry can waste the opening advantage. If the first priority is in Halls 1-8, do not enter through Halls 9-11 merely because its queue looks shorter. Even a Fast Ticket does not remove the 10:00 hall movement rule.
The event also counts visitors in hall groups. When an area reaches its limit, staff can stop entry and direct people elsewhere. A demo or stage reservation may provide a controlled exception when the time is verified, but normal admission does not guarantee access to every area at any moment.
First entry, re-entry and baggage checks
The closing time is not the last time a new visitor may enter.
| Date | First entry closes | Re-entry closes | Event closes |
|---|---|---|---|
| September 19 | 16:00 | 16:30 | 17:00 |
| September 20 | 16:00 | 16:30 | 17:00 |
| September 21 | 15:00 | 15:30 | 16:00 |
Every entrant goes through a baggage check, including people returning through a re-entry route. A large or densely packed bag takes longer to inspect. There is no published small-bag measurement, but the organizer asks visitors to bring as little as possible.
Prohibited items include weapons, sharp objects, alcohol, drones, skates, skateboards, selfie sticks and assembled objects longer than 50 centimeters such as tripods and folding chairs. Umbrellas may be carried for the journey, but staff can require them to remain folded when they create a hazard. Water and tea in sealed containers are allowed for hydration.
Bring a passport or suitable photo ID if a booth may need to check an age-restricted game. Keep medication and essential documents easy to show during inspection.
How to get from Tokyo to Makuhari Messe
The main rail route is the JR Keiyo Line from Tokyo Station to Kaihin-Makuhari. The organizer estimates about 30 minutes on a rapid service, followed by a five-minute walk. That train time does not include reaching the Keiyo platforms inside Tokyo Station, waiting for the service or walking through an event crowd.
Use the live JR East journey information on the day. Save Kaihin-Makuhari as the destination rather than searching only for "Tokyo Game Show," which can return event listings instead of the station route.
Official alternatives include:
- Makuhari-Toyosuna on the JR Keiyo Line, followed by an approximately 20-minute walk to Makuhari Messe;
- Makuhari-Hongo on the JR Sobu or Keisei line, followed by a bus toward the venue; and
- a bus stop such as Makuhari Messe Chuo or Town Center, selected from the current operator route.
An alternate route is useful only when it is running and the extra walk fits the visitor. Do not switch trains because a map app shows a slightly different pin without checking the event entrance and live disruption.
Choosing a base for Makuhari
Kaihin-Makuhari is the simplest base for minimizing event-day travel. Central Tokyo is better when Tokyo Game Show is one part of a wider city trip, but allow for the long transfer inside Tokyo Station and the return crowd. The official overseas page estimates about 40 minutes between Kaihin-Makuhari and Tokyo Station, while the access page quotes about 30 minutes for a rapid train. Treat the larger figure as the safer planning allowance because it better reflects station movement.
Family Game Park is a separate destination
The Family Game Park runs on all three public days at TKP Tokyo Bay Makuhari Hall. It is about a ten-minute walk from Kaihin-Makuhari, compared with the official five-minute estimate for Makuhari Messe. Admission is free, but entry is limited to children of junior high school age or younger and accompanying family members.
Children can try age-appropriate games in ASOVIVA, explore game-development work in MANAVIVA and attend the Kids Stage. The park uses a dedicated entrance. A junior-high-age child or adult moving into the main exhibition needs the appropriate paid admission, while elementary-school-age children and younger use the main event's free standard admission rule.
Strollers are not allowed inside the main public venue. Families must use stroller parking, and the event does not rent strollers. The Family Game Park has a second-floor information point for lost children. Agree on a family meeting point before entering, because the main halls do not make call-out announcements.
Tokyo Game Show cosplay rules
A normal admission ticket does not include the right to change into cosplay. A cosplayer needs public-day admission, cosplay registration and the applicable cosplay ticket.
The published overseas fee is JPY 2,000 for regular changing-room and cloakroom use or JPY 3,000 for early-morning use. Capacity is limited, and same-day registration may not be available. The designated changing rooms and cloakroom are on the east side of Hall 9. Changing in a restroom is prohibited, and visitors may not arrive at or leave the venue wearing the costume.
Regular registration runs from 09:30 to 14:30 on each public day. The organizer advises changing about an hour before closing because the rooms become busy. Costume and prop limits are detailed. Objects over 50 centimeters, realistic weapons and other unsafe accessories can be refused even when they form part of the character design.
Photography is allowed only in designated cosplay areas, and the photographer must ask the subject for permission. Video recording is prohibited in the cosplay area. Check the current cosplay rules before packing a prop or photographic accessory.
Phone, Wi-Fi and app preparation
Tokyo Game Show explicitly prohibits tethering from smartphones and mobile Wi-Fi routers inside Halls 1-11. The organizer says excess wireless signals can disrupt demonstrations and test runs. Do not build the day around one phone sharing a hotspot with the group.
Makuhari Messe Free Wi-Fi is available in designated places such as the second-floor Central Mall. It is a fallback, not the place to discover that the admission QR exists only inside an email account.
Prepare these before joining the crowd:
- the ticket QR and purchase confirmation, saved using the seller's supported method;
- JR East or another current journey planner;
- the official TGS website, venue map and exhibitor pages;
- an offline map covering Tokyo Station, Kaihin-Makuhari, both venues and the accommodation;
- a weather app and official Japanese emergency information;
- a charged power bank that complies with airline rules; and
- one named reunion place and time for the group.
Japan's emergency numbers are 110 for police and 119 for fire or ambulance. The Japan National Tourism Organization's Safety Tips guidance explains the government-supervised alert app for international visitors.
Mobile data for a Tokyo Game Show trip
The public Roaming eSIM catalog returned 43 Japan plans when checked at 16:57 UTC on August 20. Four current fixed-data examples were:
| Plan | Retail price | Validity | Published network label | Top-up field |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 GB | USD 1.40 | 7 days | 3G, 4G and 5G | Supported |
| 3 GB | USD 3.60 | 30 days | 3G, 4G and 5G | Supported |
| 5 GB | USD 5.40 | 30 days | 3G, 4G and 5G | Supported |
| 10 GB | USD 9.40 | 30 days | 3G, 4G and 5G | Supported |
The selected examples list KDDI, NTT Docomo, Rakuten Mobile and SoftBank operator names in their coverage data. Prices, inventory, plan routing and final checkout totals can change. A listed operator or network generation does not guarantee performance at every point in a crowded hall.
Why Roaming eSIM fits this event: a visitor with an unlocked compatible phone can choose the allowance and validity before flying, keep the usual SIM installed, and read the price, top-up field and published network details before checkout. That is a clearer fit for direct phone data than depending on venue Wi-Fi or breaking TGS's no-tethering rule. It still does not replace an offline ticket, map or meeting point.
Use a Japan Roaming eSIM when the trip stays in Japan. A regional plan can fit a route that also includes South Korea or mainland China, but check every selected package's country list before checkout.
Estimate the trip with the travel data calculator, then confirm whether the phone supports Roaming eSIM and when to install it. The Japan eSIM guide owns broad Japan setup and number questions. Families adding Tokyo, Kyoto or Osaka can use the Japan with kids guide.
Ten Tokyo Game Show 2026 visitor questions
1. Can tourists attend Tokyo Game Show 2026?
Yes. Tourists can attend the public days on September 19, 20 and 21 with the correct public ticket. September 17 and 18 are restricted business days with separate approval rules.
2. Can I buy a Tokyo Game Show ticket at the venue?
No. The organizer says no same-day public tickets will be sold at Makuhari Messe. Buy a date-specific ticket in advance through a seller linked by the official ticket page.
3. How do overseas visitors buy a normal ticket?
Open the official public ticket page and use its "People living abroad" section. At the review time, it linked a JPY 3,000 digital one-day ticket through Trip.com and required the QR code on a smartphone.
4. Is the Fast Ticket worth JPY 6,000?
It can be when one opening priority matters and you can join the correct lane by 09:00. It is poor value for a late arrival because the special lane is removed and the ticket does not bypass booth queues all day.
5. What time should I arrive at Tokyo Game Show?
Work backward from the first priority and the ticket type. Fast holders must reach the designated lane by 09:00. Normal visitors should allow for the train, station walk and baggage check instead of treating 09:30 as a platform arrival time.
6. Can I see Tokyo Game Show in one day?
You can have a useful one-day visit, but you are unlikely to complete every hall, demo and stage. Pick three priorities, map their hall groups and choose a substitute for each in case an area or queue closes.
7. Which station is closest to Tokyo Game Show?
Kaihin-Makuhari on the JR Keiyo Line is the main station. The organizer estimates a five-minute walk to Makuhari Messe and a ten-minute walk to the separate Family Game Park venue.
8. Can I leave and re-enter Tokyo Game Show?
Yes, before the published re-entry cutoff. Re-entry closes at 16:30 on September 19 and 20, and 15:30 on September 21. Returning visitors pass through baggage screening again.
9. Can I use my phone as a hotspot inside Tokyo Game Show?
No. The current visitor precautions prohibit tethering from smartphones and mobile Wi-Fi routers inside Halls 1-11. Use direct phone data, designated venue Wi-Fi where appropriate and files saved offline.
10. Is Tokyo Game Show suitable for children?
The Family Game Park is built for children through junior high school age and accompanying family members. It is free and separate from the main exhibition. Main-venue stroller storage, age rules and paid admission for junior-high-age visitors and adults still need planning.
Recheck this guide before September 2026 if the organizer changes ticket availability, entry cutoffs, hall movement, exhibitor reservations, stage schedules, rail advice, prohibited items, Family Game Park access or cosplay registration.
