Po Pin Chau reservation guide: dates, booking and transport

You need a free reservation to enter the Po Pin Chau Section of Hong Kong's High Island Geo Trail from 9am to 5pm on September 25 to 27 and October 1 to 7, 2026. The rule does not cover the East Dam or Biu Tsim Kok sections. Book through Klook, enter every visitor's real name, and bring both the e-voucher and the identity document used for the booking.

The trial is meant to spread visitors across four entry windows. It does not turn the whole East Dam area into a ticketed attraction. That boundary is the most important detail for anyone deciding whether to reserve, visit another section, or change the date.

Po Pin Chau reservation dates and times

As of September 21, the remaining designated dates are:

Earlier trial weekends on September 5-6, 12-13 and 19-20 have passed. The official booking page is the final place to check availability and any operational change before departure.

Booking opens at 11am on Monday for the coming weekend, or for the Golden Week dates one week later. Places are first come, first served. The Agriculture, Fisheries and Conservation Department can adjust entry times or quotas when site conditions require it.

Which part of East Dam needs a booking?

Only the Po Pin Chau Section of the High Island Geo Trail is inside the reservation trial. The East Dam Section and Biu Tsim Kok Section do not require a reservation under this trial.

That means a sold-out Po Pin Chau window does not automatically close the reservoir's other visitor areas. It also does not give someone permission to enter the reserved section by approaching it from another path. Use the signed entrance beside the New Territories green minibus 9A terminus and follow staff instructions.

The distinction matters because online maps and older hiking posts often use “East Dam,” “High Island” and “Po Pin Chau” loosely. The reservation is tied to a named trail section, not every viewpoint around the dam.

How to book the Po Pin Chau trail

1. Open the Po Pin Chau Section booking page in Klook's website, app or WeChat mini-program.
2. Select a designated date and one of the four entry windows.
3. Enter the real name and requested identity-document details for every visitor.
4. Check that each name matches the identity document exactly.
5. Confirm the free booking and keep the e-voucher sent by email or stored in the app.
6. Save the voucher or QR code offline, or print it.
7. Arrive at the Po Pin Chau Section entrance during the selected window.
8. Show the voucher and carry the identity document used in the booking.

One booking can cover up to five people, including the person making it. Every visitor needs a place, including children. A group of six therefore needs at least two bookings. The voucher is not transferable and cannot be resold.

The entry window controls when you may start the section; it is not a two-hour time limit after entry. If you arrive early, staff may admit you only when the current window has spare capacity. If you are late, staff may try to place you in another available window, but entry is not guaranteed when quotas are full.

Can you walk in without booking?

Possibly, but do not build a long trip around it. A visitor without an advance reservation may complete an on-site online registration only if that window still has space. You still need a phone, the requested personal information and a usable connection at the booking point.

The first trial weekends also produced a high no-show rate. Public reporting said 3,230 people reserved while 1,560 booked and walk-in visitors arrived across the first weekend. That does not create a reliable walk-in allocation for later dates; availability remains a live on-site decision.

If plans change, cancel at least 48 hours before the window starts. That returns scarce capacity instead of leaving an unusable booking.

What the Po Pin Chau hike involves

The managed section is a roughly 2km return route with about 200m of ascent. The official listing estimates around two hours and rates it three out of five for difficulty. It is intended for people with hiking or trekking experience.

There is no shade, shelter, refreshment point or mid-route exit on the section. Terrain is uneven, and weathered cliff edges make leaving the marked route a poor decision. Carry enough water and food, wear footwear suited to uneven ground, and stay behind barriers. Do not climb the rock columns or approach cliff edges for a photograph.

This is not the same as an urban waterfront walk. Parents should make a child-specific decision rather than treating the free reservation as evidence that the route suits every age or ability. Getting to Po Pin Chau and East Dam

The signed entrance is beside the terminus of green minibus 9A on Sai Kung Man Yee Road. Public transport usually requires at least one connection:

1. Reach Sai Kung Town or Pak Tam Chung.
2. Continue to High Island Reservoir East Dam using the transport operating that day.
3. Allow enough time to reach the checkpoint inside your chosen window.

The 9A minibus connects Pak Tam Chung with East Dam on its operating schedule. Taxi access is another option, but a taxi into a remote trailhead is not a guaranteed ride out. Weekend queues and demand can make the return slower than the outward journey.

Use the Transport Department's HKeMobility service on the day for routes and traffic. Do not rely on a screenshot of an old timetable. If your booking starts at 9am, verify that your planned service can actually reach East Dam before the window ends; local discussion after the first trial weekend specifically raised the mismatch between an early slot and later transport.

Plan the return before starting

The trail returns to the East Dam area, where the same limited road access affects the journey back. Before entering:

• check the latest 9A service and the connecting route from Pak Tam Chung;
• keep enough time for a queue rather than scheduling a tight dinner, ferry or flight connection;
• carry a payment method accepted by the transport you plan to use;
• save your accommodation address in Chinese and English for a taxi request; and
• download the route and essential phone numbers before leaving central Hong Kong.

Public Reddit discussions repeatedly ask whether a taxi will be available at East Dam. The honest answer is that availability varies, and queues can be substantial on busy weekends. A booked trail slot does not include transport.

Weather can cancel the reservation and the minibus

Check the Hong Kong Observatory before leaving and again before entering the trail. The booking rules provide different responses for wind, rain, thunderstorm and nearby-lightning warnings.

• Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 8 or above, or a Black Rainstorm Warning, cancels the day's subsequent reservations.
• Signal No. 3 cancels the affected window. Entry may resume within three hours after cancellation if the site is suitable, but subsequent reservations are canceled if Signal No. 3 remains at noon.
• Amber or Red Rainstorm Warnings, a New Territories East Thunderstorm Warning, or lightning reported within 10km can pause or cancel the affected window until conditions and the site are suitable.
• Minibus 9A is suspended during a Black Rainstorm Warning or Tropical Cyclone Warning Signal No. 3 or above, with resumption dependent on warning time and road conditions.

A reservation is not a weather guarantee. If conditions deteriorate, follow the official alert and on-site direction rather than trying to preserve a time slot.

Apps and offline files for the Po Pin Chau hike

Keep this small set ready before the trip:

• Klook: reservation, e-voucher and cancellation.
• HKeMobility: current public transport and traffic information.
• MyObservatory: forecasts, warning signals and location-based weather information.
• Offline maps: an independent route reference when data is weak or the phone battery needs to be preserved.
• Phone wallet or files: an offline copy of the QR voucher, booking email, ID details and accommodation address.

Screenshots are a backup, not a substitute for carrying the identity document. Bring a charged power bank and keep the phone protected from rain and sweat.

Mobile data for booking and the return journey

The reservation, weather checks, HKeMobility updates and a taxi request all depend on a working phone, but mobile data is not a substitute for offline preparation. Download the trail reference and save the QR voucher before leaving the city.
