Christmas tree and market stalls in Prague Old Town Square in December 2025

Prague's Old Town Square and Wenceslas Square Christmas markets run November 28, 2026-January 6, 2027, with advertised daily hours of 10am-10pm. Peace Square opens earlier, on November 20. If the main Christmas tree and the two central markets are the reason for your trip, book for November 28 onward rather than assuming every November weekend has the same programme.

The organizer's October 26 announcement identifies this year's Old Town tree as a 23-metre spruce from Simonovice. Its first lighting is planned for November 28, but an exact ceremony time has not been confirmed in that announcement. Keep the evening flexible rather than booking dinner around a time copied from a previous year.

The useful distinction is between the main markets, which continue into January, and neighborhood markets with earlier starts and finishes. Choose a few that fit your dates instead of trying to cross the city for every stall.

Which Prague Christmas markets are open on your dates?

The official organizer publishes the two main markets' dates and hours. Prague City Tourism's market calendar lists the neighborhood events below. Times are local; check individual listings again before a Christmas Eve or New Year's visit because a season-wide time range does not establish every holiday exception.

Wenceslas SquareNovember 28-January 610am-10pmPairing two main markets on foot
Karlin SquareDecember 6 onlyNoon-8pmA separate neighborhood outing on that Sunday

Arriving November 20-24? Make Peace Square your market plan and treat the rest as a Prague city break. November 25 adds Republic Square. A November 27 departure still misses the opening of Old Town and Wenceslas Square.

Visiting between Christmas and New Year? Peace Square and Republic Square have finished, while Andel and the two main squares remain within their published seasons. From January 1-6, concentrate on Old Town and Wenceslas Square. Do not use a map of all December markets as a list of places still trading in January.

Choose the main square, a neighborhood market, or both

Old Town Square: the tree, crafts and evening atmosphere

Old Town Square's market surrounds the seasonal tree in the historic center. The city's description includes Czech ornaments, nativity scenes and handmade decorations, with music and folklore in its cultural programme.

Go here if you want the recognizable Prague Christmas scene. Give yourself time to look at stalls rather than using the square only as a photo stop. For a group, choose a meeting point outside the busiest stall lanes before separating; a phone location pin is more useful when everyone knows which side of the square to approach.

The full 2026 performance timetable is a separate planning detail. Do not promise a particular choir or show from an older programme.

Wenceslas Square: an easy second stop, not a separate cross-city journey

The Wenceslas Square market is in the lower part of the square. Pin the market area rather than the monument at the far end when arranging to meet someone.

It works well after Old Town Square because you can keep the outing on foot. Allow a flexible half-hour between the market areas if you want to stop along the way; that is a planning allowance, not a timed walking record. If someone is tired, finish after the first square rather than treating both as compulsory.

Peace Square: the earlier opening in Vinohrady

Peace Square's market stands in front of St Ludmila's Church. Its stalls include ornaments, wooden toys, ceramics and holiday food. It is the strongest confirmed option in this shortlist for a visitor arriving before November 28.

Use the Czech place name Namesti Miru in your journey planner. Plan this as a separate neighborhood stop rather than assuming it is another section of Old Town Square.

Republic Square and Andel: choose the one near your day

The city's Republic Square listing places the market toward V Celnici Street. That detail helps when a search result drops you somewhere else on the square.

Andel's market is beside the metro station in the Smichov pedestrian zone. It is a useful choice if you are staying nearby, or if your visit falls after the December 24 close of Peace and Republic squares. Its earlier 8pm listed finish means it should come before a late Old Town visit, not after it.

A realistic two-day Prague Christmas market plan

For a trip from November 28 onward, keep one evening for the two main squares and another outing for a neighborhood market. You do not need six market visits to enjoy a short break.

Part of the tripSuggested planLeave room for
Arrival dayCheck in, eat, then visit one nearby marketA delayed flight and the airport transfer
First full afternoonStart around Republic Square if it is still in season, then walk into Old TownA warm indoor break before standing outside again
First eveningOld Town Square, followed by lower Wenceslas Square if the group still wants moreDinner and a confirmed journey back
Second dayPeace Square before December 24, or Andel before December 31A museum, a slower lunch or time away from stalls

If you have children, make one market the main outing and choose the next activity around their energy. Keep hot drinks away from pushchair handles, leave space to turn around, and avoid making a crowded opening-night ceremony your only chance to see the tree. These are planning precautions, not a guarantee of crowd levels or accessibility.

For activities beyond the markets, use the Czech Republic with kids guide. It covers a different decision: how to structure a family trip, rather than which Christmas market is open on a particular date.

Getting from Prague Airport to the Christmas markets

Prague Airport's public transport guide recommends trolleybus 59 to Nadrazi Veleslavin, then metro A, or bus 100 to Zlicin, then metro B. Stops are outside the terminals, and the ordinary airport bus services use regular Prague public transport fares.

Choose the route to your accommodation first. Taking luggage directly to a market makes the first evening harder, especially if you then need to reverse direction to check in. The roughly 15-minute time listed for line 59 is the airport-to-interchange leg, not the whole journey to Old Town Square.

The airport also warns of road restrictions around the Aviaticka junction. Leave extra time for a road transfer rather than assuming a taxi will always be quicker. For a late arrival, use the date and time of the actual landing in the journey planner; daytime metro connections are not an all-night promise.

If your route needs step-free access, check the specific station entrance, lift status and transfer in the operator's information. A station next to a market does not by itself establish an accessible journey from the airport.

PID Litacka tickets: buying is not the same as being ready to board

The PID Litacka app FAQ says you need an internet connection to buy and activate a short-term ticket. Wait until the app shows that the ticket is valid before boarding or entering the metro's paid area. Buying it while a tram is arriving is not a reliable plan.

Once activated and valid, a short-term ticket does not require an internet connection for inspection. You still need a working, charged phone and the ticket in the app. A saved screenshot of your itinerary is useful; it is not a replacement for the app ticket.

Keep these preparations separate:

  • Save the accommodation address and a map of your walking route offline.
  • Keep the app available for the live transport ticket and current journey information.
  • Charge the phone before an evening outside, and carry a battery pack if the same device holds everyone's tickets.

You can also check paper-ticket options rather than making an app essential to the holiday. Follow the instructions for the ticket you buy; a digital ticket's activation rules are not instructions for validating every other ticket type.

Food, weather and a few decisions to make before leaving the hotel

Read the displayed total before ordering, particularly when a food price is given by weight rather than by portion. Ask the stall about ingredients and cross-contact if you have an allergy. A general market description mentioning vegetarian or gluten-free dishes does not establish what an individual stall can prepare for you.

Carry a payment backup and ask before ordering instead of assuming every stall accepts the same foreign card or mobile wallet. No universal 2026 payment rule is established by the market listings cited here.

Check the forecast close to the visit. Pack for standing outdoors as well as walking, with footwear that suits wet paving and a place to put gloves while eating. Do not plan around snow appearing in Prague simply because a promotional photograph shows it.

Locate a suitable toilet and indoor break before anyone urgently needs one. The listings do not provide a complete, verified 2026 map of changing facilities, accessible toilets or every stall's seating. Ask the organizer about a specific need before relying on it.

Mobile data for tickets and meeting up in Prague

An offline map is enough for a saved walking route. It cannot buy a new app ticket, load a changed connection or send a message when your group changes plans. OpenSim can provide mobile data for those tasks on a compatible phone without needing to find Wi-Fi before each purchase or activation.

The OpenSim Czechia plans listed on November 5 include 1GB for 7 days at USD 1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD 3.00. Both listed fixed-data plans support eligible top-ups. The smaller allowance may suit a short map-and-messaging trip; frequent video uploads need a different budget. These are plan prices, not a promise that any allowance lasts every traveler a set number of days.

Use the travel data calculator, check phone compatibility, and read when to install before travel. If your home plan already includes suitable Czech roaming, compare that included allowance first. OpenSim does not replace a valid transport ticket, guarantee signal in a crowd or keep a flat phone working.
