Qantas Sydney Airport strike waiver for October 16
Qantas is offering fee-free changes for some flights leaving Sydney on Friday, October 16, as airport security screeners plan to stop work from 6am to 10am and again from 5pm to 9pm AEDT. The Qantas Sydney Airport strike waiver applies to eligible Qantas-operated domestic flights from Terminal 3 and QF-coded domestic Jetstar flights from Terminal 2 that were booked before October 16.
It is not a blanket waiver for every Qantas or Jetstar booking at Sydney Airport. Qantas International departures from Terminal 1 are not included in the eligibility stated on Qantas's current travel-update page.

The practical answer: Check the operating airline, flight number, departure terminal and original booking date before changing anything. An eligible flight can move to October 15, 16 or 17 on the same route and in the same cabin, subject to availability. Qantas waives the change fee, but says a fare difference may still apply.
This page reflects the airline notices available at 8:30pm AEDT on October 15, 2026. The strike or airline arrangements can change, so recheck the official travel update and flight status before leaving.
Who qualifies for the Qantas fee-free change
Qantas's official travel update says the flight must depart on Friday, October 16, and must have been booked before October 16. It must also fit one of these two operating and terminal conditions:
- a Qantas-operated flight leaving Sydney Domestic Terminal 3; or
- a Jetstar-operated domestic flight with a Qantas flight number leaving Sydney Terminal 2.
The operating carrier and the marketing flight number both matter for the Jetstar option. A Jetstar flight sold only with a JQ number is not included in the Qantas eligibility wording, although Jetstar has published its own, broader Sydney travel alert. Use the policy attached to the booking you actually hold.

Qantas's current notice applies to qualifying Friday departures, not only flights timed inside the two strike windows. That could change if the airline edits the notice, so save the page or your confirmation when you make a change.
What the strike means at Sydney Airport
The planned security-screening stoppages are 6am to 10am and 5pm to 9pm AEDT on Friday. Qantas expects longer security queues and tells passengers to arrive early. Virgin Australia's separate notice says screening will remain open but may operate at reduced capacity during those periods.
This is an airport security disruption, not a Qantas announcement that all Friday flights are cancelled. A later departure can still be affected by a queue that takes time to clear. A carry-on-only passenger also has to pass security, so skipping checked baggage does not remove that part of the journey.
Check Qantas flight status, the airport display and messages attached to your booking. Keep enough time for check-in or bag-drop deadlines as well as screening. Neither Qantas nor Sydney Airport has published one guaranteed arrival-time allowance that fits every flight.
How to move an eligible flight
If the booking was made directly with Qantas, start in Manage booking. Compare the available October 15, 16 and 17 flights before confirming. Check that the origin, destination and cabin stay the same, then read the price summary for any fare difference.
Qantas directs passengers who need more help to call 13 13 13. If a travel agent made the booking, contact the agent instead. For a multi-sector itinerary, ask whether changing the Sydney departure also changes another segment, seat request, baggage allowance or connection. Do not assume the whole booking will move because one sector qualifies.
Save the original itinerary, the strike notice, the price screen and the revised confirmation. A fee-free change is not the same as a promise of a free replacement on any flight you choose.
Connections between Sydney terminals need a separate check
An international arrival at Terminal 1 followed by a Qantas domestic departure at Terminal 3 involves more than the domestic security queue. Border processing, baggage collection where required, terminal transfer and the domestic flight's cutoff all affect the connection.
The waiver can help when the covered departing sector meets Qantas's conditions, but the airline's public notice does not promise that every connecting itinerary can be moved online or that a specific connection time remains safe. Open the full itinerary in Manage booking or ask Qantas or the issuing travel agent to review it as one trip.
Passengers arriving on a separate ticket have less protection if the first flight runs late. If you change the domestic leg, make sure the new timing still works with the incoming flight and any overnight or ground-transfer plans.
Mobile data after your departure is settled
An Australia OpenSim eSIM can provide eligible mobile data for checking flight messages, airport information, maps and onward transport after arrival. For a trip that also includes New Zealand, compare the listed countries and current packages on the Australia and New Zealand OpenSim eSIM page.
The public OpenSim catalog was checked on October 15 and showed live plans for both destinations. Allowance, validity, network, hotspot support and top-up eligibility vary by package. An eSIM provides mobile data. It cannot shorten an airport queue, change a flight or protect a connection.
Ten questions about the Sydney strike and Qantas changes
Does the Qantas Sydney Airport strike waiver cover every Friday flight?
No. The current Qantas notice covers Friday departures booked before October 16 that are either Qantas-operated from domestic T3 or QF-coded, Jetstar-operated domestic flights from T2.
Does the waiver cover Qantas International flights from Terminal 1?
Not under the eligibility published by Qantas at 8:30pm AEDT on October 15. The listed Qantas option is for Qantas-operated flights from Sydney Domestic T3.
Is a Jetstar booking eligible?
Only under the Qantas waiver when it is a Jetstar-operated domestic flight from T2 with a Qantas flight number and meets the booking and travel-date conditions. Jetstar also has its own alert for Jetstar bookings.
Can I move a morning flight even if it departs outside the strike hours?
The current Qantas notice states that eligible Friday departures can change and does not limit the offer to flights inside the 6am to 10am or 5pm to 9pm windows.
Which dates can I choose instead?
An eligible booking can move to an available flight on Thursday, October 15, Friday, October 16 or Saturday, October 17, with the same origin, destination and cabin.
Will the replacement flight be completely free?
Qantas waives the change fee, but its notice says a fare difference may apply. Review the price before confirming the new flight.
How early should I arrive at Sydney Airport?
Qantas says to arrive early because it expects longer security queues, but it does not give one extra-time figure for every flight. Follow the check-in time for your flight and allow additional time for screening.
Does travelling with carry-on baggage avoid the strike queue?
No. Carry-on-only passengers still pass through security screening before reaching the departure gate.
Can I change a connecting domestic flight after an international arrival?
Possibly, if the departing domestic sector meets the waiver conditions. Have Qantas or the issuing agent review the complete itinerary because terminal transfer, baggage and other sectors can affect the change.
Who changes a booking made through a travel agent?
Qantas tells passengers who booked through a travel agent to contact that agent. Ask for written confirmation of every changed sector and any fare difference.
What to do before Friday's departure
- Confirm the operating airline, flight number and Sydney terminal.
- Check that the booking was made before October 16.
- Read the latest Qantas or Jetstar travel alert attached to your booking.
- Compare October 15, 16 and 17 before accepting a new flight.
- Review any fare difference before confirming.
- Ask about every sector when the journey has a connection.
- Contact the issuing travel agent when it made the booking.
- Save the original and revised itineraries.
- Monitor flight status and airline messages.
- Allow extra time for security even when travelling with carry-on only.
Evidence and the update trigger
Qantas's travel-update page is the controlling source for its fee-free change conditions. Qantas flight status and Manage booking support the practical checks. Jetstar and Virgin Australia published separate notices that confirm the same planned strike windows but contain their own airline-specific change rules.
The Transport Workers' Union announcement, aviation reporting and public traveler discussions were checked for the dispute context and recurring questions. They were not used to expand Qantas's eligibility rules. The 2023 terminal photograph is illustrative and does not document the current event.
OpenSim will update this URL if Qantas changes the booking cutoff, eligible terminals, travel dates, fare treatment or disruption status. After October 16, the page will retain the dated record and direct passengers to current airline notices rather than presenting the waiver as active.
