Qatar Airways now has 150 Starlink-equipped widebody aircraft and has put the world's first Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9 into service. The airline announced the milestone on August 20, 2026, after completing installation across its Boeing 787-8 subfleet.
The figure is large enough to change the odds for many passengers, but it is not a fleetwide promise. Qatar Airways says more than half of its Boeing 787 fleet is equipped and aims to finish the 787 rollout by the end of 2026. Its current passenger page still limits Starlink to selected routes and aircraft, subject to equipment changes.

What Qatar Airways confirmed in the 150-aircraft announcement
Qatar Airways' August 20 newsroom release gives the most current fleet milestone. The airline says:
- 150 Qatar Airways widebody aircraft now have Starlink;
- the first Starlink-equipped Boeing 787-9 has entered operation;
- the Boeing 787-8 subfleet installation is complete;
- more than half of the combined Boeing 787 fleet is equipped;
- the 787 program is due to finish by the end of 2026;
- the wider Starlink installation program has passed 83 percent completion; and
- up to 323 Qatar Airways flights a day now operate with Starlink.
The airline also reports more than 23 million passenger connections across more than 86,000 flights since the service began in October 2024. Those are airline-reported connection and flight totals, not independent speed or reliability measurements.

A Boeing 787-9 booking does not guarantee Starlink
The new aircraft type is the most likely source of confusion. Qatar Airways had already introduced Starlink on the Boeing 787-8. The August announcement adds the first equipped 787-9 and says more than half of the full 787 fleet is now connected.
That does not mean every Qatar Airways 787-9 has the system. An aircraft type shown during booking can narrow the possibilities, but it cannot confirm the exact installation status of the aircraft that will operate the flight. A last-minute aircraft substitution can also change the onboard service.
Qatar Airways' current connectivity page lists more than 130 destinations served by Starlink-capable Boeing 777, Airbus A350 and Boeing 787 aircraft. The same page states that availability is limited to selected routes and aircraft and remains subject to equipment changes. Treat the destination list as a possible operating footprint, not a guarantee attached to every departure.

Is Qatar Airways Starlink free in Economy?
Yes, but the length of access now depends on membership. Qatar Airways gives a traveler 45 minutes of Starlink access without membership. A free Privilege Club account unlocks access for the full flight on an equipped aircraft.
This is not a Business Class-only benefit. The airline's onboard portal presents full-flight access through a Privilege Club login or sign-up. The Oryx Comms portal asks a new member to verify an email address and complete the profile, so creating and testing the account before departure avoids relying on an in-flight verification step.
Qatar Airways describes Starlink as free gate-to-gate internet, but notes that gate-to-gate operation is available only at selected airports. It advertises speeds up to 500 Mbps and promotes browsing, streaming and work. That headline speed is an upper claim, not a guaranteed result for each device or each part of a route.
How to connect to Qatar Airways Starlink
The current passenger instructions are short:
- Keep the device in airplane mode.
- Turn on Wi-Fi and join the network named "Oryx Comms".
- Open the onboard portal.
- Enter the Privilege Club email or membership details for full-flight access, or use the nonmember 45-minute option.
Use headphones, keep the device silent and follow the crew's instructions. The portal itself asks passengers to speak softly. Fast internet does not make a cabin a suitable place for a loud voice or video call.
What happens if the aircraft does not have Starlink?
Qatar Airways still sells legacy onboard Wi-Fi on aircraft without Starlink. Its current page advertises up to 20 percent savings for access bought before the trip. Privilege Club members can receive one complimentary hour on that older service, while Student Club can include a full-flight benefit under the current published terms.
Do not mix those rules with Starlink. The 45-minute nonmember and full-flight Privilege Club rule applies to Starlink. The one-hour member benefit, paid voucher terms and one-device-at-a-time rule sit in the separate legacy Wi-Fi section.
The same page warns that service can be interrupted because of country regulations. It also says purchased access is nonrefundable. If internet is essential for work, download documents and authentication methods before boarding rather than making the flight connection the only copy.
Qatar Airways Starlink or Roaming eSIM: which one wins?
They cover different parts of the journey. Qatar Airways wins in the air on an equipped flight because its Starlink service is included and built for the aircraft. A Roaming eSIM does not connect to an aircraft satellite system.
Roaming eSIM has the advantage once the traveler reaches the ground. The Qatar catalog returned 15 live packages when checked on August 21.
