Riverfire returns to Brisbane on Saturday, September 5, 2026. The Australian Defence Force flyovers are scheduled from 4:45pm to 5:30pm, and the fireworks begin at 7pm. Watching is free, but the hard part is not finding the river. It is choosing a viewing area that your group can leave safely once a very large crowd starts moving at the same time.

Recent reporting says more than 500,000 people are expected across Brisbane's main vantage points. The same reporting says the 2026 transport plan adds capacity for 36,500 bus trips during the 90 minutes after the display and schedules 80 extra trains, following serious crowding and long waits in 2025. Those additions matter, but they do not make the nearest platform the quickest choice for every spectator.

South Bank gives the most complete event setting, but it also concentrates families, food queues and transport demand. A farther view can be the better choice for anyone who values space, a predictable exit or a shorter wait after the final firework.
South Bank entry and bag rules
South Bank is fenced for Riverfire and closes when it reaches capacity. The organizer's FAQ says the fenced area typically opens at 9am, with final 2026 entry details still subject to an update. Bag checks begin at 9am under the current guidance.
Do not bring pets, bikes, scooters, drones, glass, metal cutlery, alcohol or bottles with broken seals. Sealed water bottles and empty refillable containers are allowed. South Bank is an alcohol-free zone.
These rules apply to the South Bank event area, not automatically to every park on the official viewing map. Check the conditions for the exact place you choose. Arriving early also means preparing for hours outdoors, so bring sun protection, food that complies with the entry rules, a light layer for the evening and only what the group can carry through a crowded exit.
Bridge, river and ferry closures
The organizer's 2026 closure document is more useful than a generic map because it gives different times for each crossing.

The practical rule is simple: do not use a bridge or ferry as the only connection between your viewing spot and the journey home. Keep the group on the side of the river that leads to its chosen station or pickup area.
The official document also lists many street, parking and taxi changes across Brisbane City, South Brisbane, Fortitude Valley, Kangaroo Point, Mt Coot-tha and Mt Gravatt. Public transport and the trip home
Additional Citytrain, bus and CityCat services are planned. Translink fares are currently a flat 50 cents across its Queensland network, including South East Queensland buses, trains, ferries and on-demand services. Airtrain is excluded from the flat fare.
The exit still needs a personal plan:
- Save the last practical service before the flyovers begin.
- Pick a primary station and a second station farther from the nearest crowd.
- Keep the official bridge closure times beside the route.
- Decide whether to wait in place after 7pm or start walking away from the river.
- Set a meeting point outside the tightest viewing area.
Do not request a rideshare from inside a closure zone. The official notice tells passengers to check in-app pickup and drop-off locations because they move with the road plan. South Bank taxi pickups shift to the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre rank on Glenelg Street at Merivale Street.
Shared bikes and scooters are not a dependable fallback either. Geofencing restrictions expand during Riverfire, which can stop a trip or prevent parking inside the event area.
Riverfire with children or access requirements
For children, the loud flyovers, long wait and crowded exit need more planning than the 7pm fireworks. Use hearing protection appropriate for the child, write a contact number on a card, photograph what each child is wearing and agree on a precise meeting point. A station name is too broad when thousands of people are moving through it.
The free accessible viewing area is at Kangaroo Point Cliffs. The organizer's current access page says capacity is about 300 people, attendance is first come, first served, and visitors should book to secure a place. Use the live booking link rather than assuming general admission covers this area.
Mobility-device users should also inspect the route from the accessible area to the planned transport stop. A viewing area can be designated accessible while nearby road controls, gradients and crowd density still affect the complete journey.
Rain, flyovers and last-minute changes
Riverfire is scheduled to proceed in rain and moderate wind. The organizer says excessive wind can cancel the fireworks. Check the Bureau of Meteorology forecast and Brisbane Festival update before traveling.
The event page currently gives a 4:45pm to 5:30pm flyover window. Aircraft, timing and operating conditions can change. Do not fly a drone: Brisbane Festival prohibits drone flights within 1,500 metres of the event areas because of low-flying aircraft, fireworks and the number of people below.
If a late change affects your chosen side of the river, change the viewing spot before entering the crowd. Crossing the event footprint after closures begin is much harder than choosing a different park earlier in the day.
