Rome Film Fest 2026: tickets, subtitles and the free bus

Rome Film Fest runs October 13-25, 2026, and ordinary visitors can buy tickets for public screenings. Pick the film first, then check its language, cinema and admission deadline. A free festival bus connects Termini with the Auditorium Parco della Musica; tram 2 is currently running as a replacement bus.
The festival, also called Festa del Cinema di Roma, opens today. The organizer's October 12 announcement confirms the opening film, Paolo Genovese's *Il rumore delle cose nuove*, and a 7pm ceremony in Sala Sinopoli with a relay in Sala Petrassi. Those plans do not mean tickets remain available.
For a normal Rome holiday, one carefully chosen screening can be enough. A dedicated cinema trip needs more planning because the programme spreads across venues, and a reservation for one event does not get you into another.
What can a visitor attend?
| What you want | Where to start | Admission decision |
|---|---|---|
| A film or public encounter | The official programme and Boxol | Buy the specific session, not a general promise of festival access |
| Red-carpet viewing | Auditorium Cavea | Free viewing is subject to capacity and security checks |
| A MAXXI screening | MAXXI's festival schedule | Use Boxol or a festival box office, not the museum ticket desk |
| An accredited screening | Your badge category's reservation instructions | Accreditation and a seat reservation are separate requirements |
Use the current festival programme rather than an early-season list of expected guests. Follow its links to the screening and ticket pages. If your main reason for visiting is a particular actor or filmmaker, check the actual event notice before committing an evening to it.
Buying public tickets and budgeting for films
The official ticket office lists prices from EUR6 to EUR30, depending on the event. Online advance sales started October 7 at 11am. During October 13-25, tickets can also be bought at the Auditorium's festival box office, subject to availability.
Two tickets at the EUR6 rate total EUR12; two at EUR30 total EUR60. That is a range of possible screening costs, not a quote for opening night or a pass covering the whole festival. Check the selected event's final checkout total and any booking charges.
The Auditorium's 2026 festival notice gives the central box-office hours:
| Dates | Festival box-office hours, Rome local time |
|---|---|
| October 13 | 11am-9pm |
| October 14-25 | 11am-10pm |
It also sets a maximum of six tickets per film for each buyer. Check the number of seats before payment, particularly when organizing a group. A receipt without the usable admission ticket is not something to discover at the cinema door.
If the film you want is unavailable, look for another public screening in the official programme. Do not treat a listing as proof that seats are still on sale. Keep a second choice that fits your language needs and journey, rather than buying an unrelated film simply to get inside.
Will the films have English subtitles?
The public admission rules say screenings use the original language, with Italian and English subtitles, or English subtitles alone for Italian films. The festival will announce exceptions.
Check your exact session before buying. An English-language website, translated synopsis or international cast does not establish the language of the screening. Ask separately about the language of an introduction, masterclass or discussion; the film-subtitle rule does not promise interpretation for every conversation.
This matters if you found advice about the earlier Venice-in-Rome screenings. That was a different event, and its language arrangements should not be carried over to this festival. When two friends have different language needs, agree on the screening details before one person buys both seats.
Free red-carpet viewing is separate from a screening seat
The Auditorium's festival notice allows free red-carpet viewing from the lower and upper Cavea while space remains. Security staff may control or limit access. This is not a guarantee of a close view, an autograph or admission to the cinema.
For opening day, the October 13 red-carpet notice lists the arrivals at 6pm and the ceremony stream at 7pm. Do not confuse the red-carpet time with the screening or ceremony time on your ticket. Later days need their own notices.
If you have a film booking, give yourself a firm point to leave the viewing area. Watching another arrival is not worth missing the admission deadline for the film you paid to see. Visitors without tickets can choose the public viewing option, but should keep an alternative evening plan if the area reaches capacity.
A free bus runs from Termini to the Auditorium
ATAC's festival bus notice, checked October 13, confirms a free service for October 13-25:
| Direction | Terminus | First and last departures |
|---|---|---|
| Termini to Auditorium | Termini, lane B | 8am-11:40pm |
| Auditorium to Termini | Via Nedo Nadi | 8:30am-12:10am |
The outbound route also stops by Repubblica, Via Veneto, Villa Borghese and Piazzale Flaminio. Return stops differ, so save the notice for both directions. ATAC does not give a fixed frequency or journey time on that page.
The last return departure is just after midnight. Calculate your film's likely finish before relying on it, allowing for any introduction or discussion. Termini may still be a further journey from your accommodation; arriving there does not complete every visitor's route home.
Do not plan around an operating tram 2
Some visitor guides recommend Metro A to Flaminio, followed by tram 2. The current ATAC tram-service notice says line 2 remains replaced by buses. At Piazzale Flaminio, the replacement service toward Piazza Mancini leaves from the bus 490 stop.
Use the operator's live route information for your actual departure point. The free festival bus and the line 2 replacement are different services; their stops should not be treated as interchangeable.
Leave room for finding the correct stop, waiting and walking from the bus to your hall. A taxi can be a fallback when the route or late finish does not suit your group, but this guide does not quote a fare or promise vehicle availability.
Choose one venue area before adding another film
The festival venue page places the main screenings and red carpet at the Auditorium. The wider programme also uses MAXXI, Casa del Cinema and other cinemas. Read the hall name as well as the film title.
For a short visit, build around one booked event. Eat beforehand, travel to the venue, and leave time for security. Adding a second film is reasonable only when the first film's running time, any introduction and the transfer allow you to reach the next entrance early.
An afternoon at MAXXI followed by a screening there is simpler than crossing Rome between two cinemas. A Casa del Cinema screening can fit a Villa Borghese outing, but the park visit still needs to end in time for admission. These are planning suggestions, not timed walking routes.
Examples from MAXXI's opening-week schedule
The current MAXXI festival page lists these sessions:
| Date | Film | Start and listed running time |
|---|---|---|
| October 15 | *Birds of War* | 7pm, 85 minutes |
| October 15 | *Mission* | 9pm, 87 minutes |
| October 16 | *Wax & Gold* | 9:30pm, 97 minutes |
The two October 15 films leave a nominal 35-minute gap if the first starts on time and has no extra discussion. Check those conditions before buying both. The October 16 film would end around 11:07pm on its running time alone; plan the journey home before booking.
MAXXI's museum hours are not the screening timetable. The venue explicitly directs film buyers to Boxol or festival box offices, and says its museum ticket desk cannot sell these screening tickets. Museum ticket or myMAXXI card holders have a published 20% festival-event discount; check the applicable booking conditions before purchase.
Admission, luggage, families and access
The ticket-office guidance sets admission up to ten minutes before the screening starts and says late entry after the start is not permitted. Arrive well before that cutoff for security. Thirty minutes early is a useful planning margin, not a guaranteed queue time.
The public rules prohibit large bags and suitcases in the theatres. Leave flight luggage elsewhere rather than assuming a festival cloakroom will accept it. They also require phones to be turned off and prohibit audiovisual recording inside.
Children under six cannot attend festival screenings. Check individual age restrictions for older children; the rules specify accompanying-adult and identification conditions for some restricted films. For wider family plans, use the Italy with kids guide rather than treating every festival film as a family activity.
The organizer describes the Auditorium spaces as barrier-free. Accessible-ticket arrangements still need a separate check: the festival directs disability ticket purchases to its box offices with supporting documentation. Visitors using foreign certificates should confirm acceptance, reserved seating and companion arrangements before travel. Do not infer accessible transport or facilities at every other cinema from the Auditorium's statement.
Public tickets are not accreditation reservations
You do not need a professional badge to buy a public screening ticket. Accredited visitors follow a different process. Boxol's accredited-visitor instructions require both the badge and a reserved seat.
For the applicable accredited screenings, reservations open at 8am, 48 hours before the screening day. Press previews have additional priority rules. That is not a new release time for ordinary public tickets, whose advance sale already began October 7.
If you have a badge, read its category's rules rather than borrowing instructions from another festival. Boxol requires cancellation at least two hours before a reserved screening if you cannot attend; repeated uncancelled no-shows can lead to temporary badge deactivation.
Useful apps and keeping tickets available
The Rome Film Fest 2026 app listing describes programme browsing, festival news and a personal schedule. Use it to keep a shortlist, but do not mistake adding a film to your calendar for reserving a seat.
The official ATAC Roma app supports route planning, arrival forecasts, service information and digital transport tickets. Check the current festival route through ATAC even if an older saved map suggests a tram.
Before leaving your accommodation, save usable film tickets, the hall address, the relevant subtitle details and the return-bus notice. Keep enough battery for both admission and the journey home. A screenshot is only a fallback where the ticket system accepts it; an order email alone should not replace the actual ticket.
OpenSim can supply a separate Italy data allowance for checking route changes, booking pages and messages away from accommodation Wi-Fi. The live catalog checked October 13 lists an Italy 5GB plan valid for 30 days at USD4.76, with top-up support. That gives a visitor a stated data budget rather than relying on finding Wi-Fi during a transfer. Check the selected plan's current price and start conditions before payment.
If your existing roaming already includes enough Italy data without an extra charge, another plan may be unnecessary. Use the travel data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide before choosing an OpenSim Italy plan. Mobile data does not reserve a film, shorten a queue or extend the last bus.
Sources and updates for the October festival
Ticket, language, venue and transport details were checked October 13 against the linked festival, Boxol, Auditorium, MAXXI and ATAC pages. Follow the current booking conditions and operator notices when making a time-sensitive journey. We will update this URL for material admission, subtitle, programme or transport changes, including changes before the October 17-18 weekend and after the festival closes October 25.
