A green-painted performer holds a burning staff during Samhuinn Fire Festival in October 2016

Samhuinn Fire Festival takes place on Calton Hill, Edinburgh, on Saturday, October 31, 2026. The official box office was sold out when checked on October 13. If you do not have a ticket, use the Citizen Ticket waiting list rather than arranging your trip around an unconfirmed place.

Already booked? Plan for an outdoor evening on a hill, not a seated show. Save your ticket, check the entrance instructions and arrange any access support before the October 28 deadline.

What is Samhuinn, and is it the Halloween event you want?

Samhuinn is a modern community performance marking the change from summer to winter. Beltane Fire Society's 2026 announcement describes fire-play, drumming, acrobatics, dance and costumed performers. The Cailleach oversees a story involving the Summer King and Winter Queen.

It is not a conventional concert with one stage and a seat from which to watch everything. Nor is it a large fireworks display. You are choosing an outdoor performance involving movement, sound and fire, with the practical demands that come with standing outside at night.

The society's background page distinguishes the contemporary festival from its older cultural inspiration. Historical photographs and videos may show a Royal Mile procession or a different venue. The confirmed 2026 location is Calton Hill. Do not use an old video as an entrance map.

Sold-out tickets: what the official waiting list can and cannot do

Citizen Ticket is the authorized box office. Its current page directs visitors to a waiting list if more tickets become available. There is no published guarantee of a place, release time or chance of success that would justify extending a hotel stay solely for the waitlist.

If Edinburgh is already part of your trip, joining that list may be reasonable. If the festival is your only reason for traveling, wait for a confirmed booking before taking on non-refundable costs. Two people traveling together should decide whether they would still want to go if only one place became available.

Do not treat a private message, screenshot or social-media resale offer as an alternative official sales channel. Beltane's ticket instructions say tickets cannot be resold or transferred through a secondary market. The same page says there will be no official livestream; do not pay a supposed streaming service to watch it.

An organizer page that still says tickets are selling fast is not a reason to ignore the sold-out box office. Read the current booking status, not just a headline from the September launch.

Published ticket totals, including booking fees

These amounts appeared on Citizen Ticket on October 13. They describe the listed advance products, not available stock.

TicketListed totalIncluded booking fee
Standard admissionGBP16.38GBP1.38
Child under 16GBP13.16GBP1.16
Low-income ticketGBP13.16GBP1.16

The low-income option is limited and is not a student discount. The box office also offers a contribution-setting option; check its final checkout total rather than assuming every chosen contribution has the same fee.

If you already have a ticket and cannot attend, use the provider's refund process. The organizer's specific 2026 page gives 11:59pm UK time on Wednesday, October 28 as the refund and return cutoff, allowing returned tickets to be reallocated. Check the terms attached to your booking rather than trying to sell it privately.

Samhuinn times and the correct Calton Hill entrance

The 2026 visitor instructions say to approach from the bottom of Regent Road, then follow the stewarded route onto Calton Hill Drive. A map pin at the top of the hill is not the same as the event entrance.

Part of the eveningPublished time
Gates open6:30pm; do not queue beforehand
Neid Fire, the bonfire lightingApproximately 7:45pm
Last entryStrictly 9pm
Rituals scheduled to finishBy 10:30pm

Citizen Ticket lists the event until 10:45pm. That is not a promise that the ritual continues until then. Plan your return around the finish and the time it takes to leave the hill, not a train departing at the same minute.

Have the real ticket QR code ready and keep the phone screen dry for scanning. Resolve a missing ticket or account-access problem before leaving your accommodation. An email subject line saying you booked is not a substitute for opening the ticket itself.

Avoid squeezing dinner into the gap between your train's arrival and last entry. Choose a meal time that leaves room for an unfamiliar route and ticket checks. If visiting Glasgow earlier that day, allow for the journey to Edinburgh as well as the walk from the station; the two cities are not interchangeable bases for a late evening.

Getting there and getting back

Edinburgh Waverley is a central rail arrival point. Check your train for October 31, then plan from the station exit to Regent Road rather than following a generic sightseeing route up Calton Hill.

ScotRail lists step-free platform access at Waverley. That does not establish a step-free route through the festival. If you need assistance, consider the whole journey: train, station exit, approach, hill access and departure.

The official Lothian Bus & Tram app provides journey planning, vehicle tracking, service alerts and integrated ticketing. Use it to check the route to your accommodation before the event and again when leaving. An outbound service is not proof of a late-night return.

For a group, agree on a meeting place away from the performance areas and save the accommodation address on everyone's phone. If attending alone, keep that return plan just as deliberate; there is no need to find strangers to travel with merely because you are going to a public event by yourself.

Do not assume a taxi booking includes access to the top of the hill. Festival vehicle drop-offs require the organizer's advance arrangements. A driver navigating to the venue pin cannot bypass event barriers.

Bags, seating and an evening outdoors

Citizen Ticket's entry rules limit bags to no bigger than an A3 piece of paper and say there is no cloakroom or left-luggage service. This is the organizer's size reference, not a published allowance in litres. Leave airport luggage elsewhere before approaching the entrance.

There is no supplied seating. Camping chairs are allowed only subject to steward instructions about where and when they can be used. Do not rely on a chair as proof that you will have a reserved place or an unobstructed view.

The official Edinburgh tourism listing warns of uneven ground, slopes and darkness. Wear suitable footwear and bring a torch. Check the weather close to the night; an October average cannot tell you whether October 31 will be wet or windy.

Pack for the evening you will actually spend outside. Gloves and a charged power bank can be more useful than elaborate costume accessories. Eat beforehand if a delayed meal would make the night difficult. Keep medication and other essentials easy to reach without emptying your bag in a queue.

The event rules prohibit glass, drums and loud instruments, public fire props, fireworks, flammable liquids and drones. Dogs are not admitted except guide dogs. Review the full current list before packing, particularly if a Halloween costume includes something that looks like a performance prop.

Children, access needs and performance boundaries

Under-16s need a ticket and a ticketed accompanying adult. The tourism listing flags semi-nudity and uninhibited behavior, leaving suitability to parents and guardians. Being admitted is not the same as every child enjoying the noise, darkness or long outdoor evening.

For a child who tires early, plan an exit rather than insisting on staying until the ritual ends. Ask a steward about the child's contact wristband when entering. Our United Kingdom with kids guide covers broader family-trip choices if this event is not a good fit.

For access support, buy your own admission first, then contact [email protected] for the request form. The organizer's 2026 instructions require completed forms by 11:59pm on October 28. Companion tickets and the limited vehicle drop-off window must be arranged in advance.

Explain the support you need rather than asking only whether the event is accessible. Someone who can manage the approach but cannot stand for long needs a different arrangement from someone requiring a vehicle drop-off. Ask before booking transport around a plan that has not been agreed.

Stay behind barriers, follow stewards and keep at least two metres from performers working with fire. Turn off camera flash and do not walk backwards while filming. A close-up photograph is not worth losing track of the ground or obstructing someone else's view.

If a waitlist place never arrives

Keep the festival as an optional part of an Edinburgh visit, not an obligation to recover money already spent. Choose another evening activity with a confirmed booking and clear age or access conditions, or leave the evening free for dinner and a less demanding day afterward.

Do not climb an unfamiliar dark hill to try to see over the festival boundary. A distant glimpse is not the same experience as admission, and a stranger's suggestion from a previous year does not establish a permitted 2026 viewing spot.

The society's October 7 volunteer call describes training and walkthrough commitments for stewards and technical roles. That is participation with responsibilities, not a last-minute ticket workaround for tourists. Ask the team about current needs only if you can genuinely make the required commitment.

Keep tickets and journey information available

Save your ticket in the provider's supported format, check that it opens, and retain the booking reference. Download a map before leaving Wi-Fi. Tell your group where to meet if messages stop arriving, and keep enough battery for the return journey rather than filming the whole performance.

Mobile data can help with current bus information, a changed route or contacting your group. For an international visitor without suitable UK data included at home, OpenSim United Kingdom plans provide a separate allowance for those tasks.

On October 13, the public catalog listed United Kingdom 5GB for 30 days at USD4.76, with top-up support for that plan. That can suit an Edinburgh trip continuing elsewhere in Scotland, rather than depending on finding Wi-Fi at every stop. Check the current plan, checkout total and device before buying.

If your home plan already includes enough UK data, using it may be simpler. An eSIM cannot obtain a sold-out ticket, bypass entry checks or guarantee reception in a crowd. Our phone compatibility guide, installation timing guide and travel data calculator cover those separate decisions.

Sources and updates

Event details were checked on October 13, 2026, against Beltane Fire Society's 2026 visitor instructions and announcement, Citizen Ticket and Edinburgh's official tourism listing. Transport guidance uses ScotRail and Lothian's own information. Ticket stock, weather and service conditions may change.

We will revisit this guide before the October 28 access and return deadline, for material entrance or ticket changes, and after October 31. This URL covers the 2026 event; a later edition's rules should not be assumed to match.
