Illuminated direction signs outside Roppongi Hills at night in July 2008

Roppongi Art Night runs from 5pm on Saturday October 31 to 6am on Sunday November 1, 2026. Much of the public art is free, but individual works, museum exhibitions and booked activities have their own hours and conditions. Choose your return journey before deciding to stay overnight.

The organizer's event outline confirms the return of the all-night format after three years, with France as this edition's RAN Focus. The October 22 programme update is a useful reason to revisit an itinerary made earlier in the year.

You can enjoy the festival without staying until dawn. An evening with two or three carefully chosen stops is a reasonable plan, especially with children or an early start the next day. All times below are Japan Standard Time, JST.

Start with the kind of evening you want

Your planA useful starting pointDecide before leaving
A first visit without an overnight stayOne Roppongi Hills work, then a nearby performance or exhibitionYour complete last-train route to the hotel
Art with English discussionAn officially booked English guided tourConfirmed reservation and whether its finish fits your journey
A family afternoon and early eveningCardboard-building activity, food, then an early timed workChildren's energy, venue conditions and an early return
A night that continues after trains finishSpecific late performances rather than an unplanned wanderA confirmed ride or suitable booked accommodation
A Sunday daytime visitWorks whose individual listings extend into November 1Do not assume Saturday's performances repeat on Sunday

The general outline allows installation viewing beyond the overnight core period, but that does not make every museum or work continuously available. Read the listing for each stop, including its location and final entry time.

Four programme choices with different booking needs

WA at Roppongi Hills Arena

Charles Pétillon's WA programme page lists three free ten-minute presentations on October 31: 5.45pm, 8.15pm and 11.10pm. The work uses two large floating circles made from white balloons.

Pick one presentation that fits the rest of your route. Arriving halfway through a ten-minute programme is different from arriving halfway through a long exhibition opening. Recheck the individual listing before travelling rather than relying on a broad all-night label.

Build a cardboard structure at Roppongi Nishi Park

Olivier Grossetête's participatory building project lists assembly on October 31, 1pm-9pm, and dismantling on November 1, 1pm to around 4pm. Participation is free, with drop-in participation indicated for those activities.

The organizer describes a structure made from cardboard boxes and tape, built through collective work. This offers something to do rather than only something to photograph. Ask staff which task is suitable for your party and follow the working-area instructions. Sunday dismantling is a different activity from Saturday building.

Watch the octopus performance at the correct location

The Tako Mikoshi performance listing gives 8.40pm-9.30pm and 11.30pm-12.20am on Seijoki-dori, followed by 1.30am-2am on November 1 at 66 Plaza. It is free.

That third location matters. Do not return to the earlier street expecting the same performance there after midnight. The later slot also needs a different transport plan from the first one. These are published programme times, not a guarantee against weather or operational changes.

Tea service at the Suntory Museum of Art

The evening tea programme runs on October 31, 5.30pm-8.30pm, in the museum's sixth-floor Genchō-an tearoom. Tea and sweets cost JPY1,500, with museum admission required separately.

The museum's English ticket page separates 5.30pm-7.30pm online tickets from 7.30pm-8.30pm same-day reception sales. The online part does not reserve an exact entry time. Preschool-aged children cannot participate, and the service uses chairs rather than floor seating.

Check actual availability before paying. The ticket page also announces online-sales maintenance from 11pm October 26 to 6am October 27 JST. A booking page being unavailable during that period does not by itself mean the event is sold out.

English tours are free, but they need reservations

The official English guided-tour page lists three approximately 90-minute departures:

DateTimeMeeting point
October 316pm-7.30pmLouise Bourgeois's Maman sculpture at Roppongi Hills
October 3110pm-11.30pmThe same meeting point
November 12pm-3.30pmThe same meeting point

Each tour has about 15 places, with advance application on a first-come basis. A published application link is not confirmation that places remain. Follow the organizer's reservation process and wait for the necessary confirmation.

The organizer welcomes participants willing to communicate in English, rather than limiting the tour by nationality. Its notes say children under six need an accompanying parent or guardian and under-18s cannot attend after 11pm. Choose the early or daytime option for younger participants instead of assuming the late tour fits everyone.

Check the rain arrangements and meeting instructions on the page. Booked tours have their own timetable, so do not put another timed performance into the middle of one.

An early route from Roppongi Hills

As an itinerary suggestion, start in the Roppongi Hills area for the early WA presentation, leave time for food, then choose either a booked exhibition or the first octopus performance. You do not need to cross the whole district to make the visit worthwhile.

If tea is your priority, begin at Tokyo Midtown and the Suntory Museum instead. Do not plan to enter the 5.30pm tea service and watch the 5.45pm Arena presentation as though they were next door or had instant admission. The tea ticket does not guarantee an exact entry minute.

For a longer evening, add another venue only after checking its own closing time. A museum in the festival area can close before the overnight street programme ends. Our DESIGNART TOKYO guide covers a different citywide design event; its venue hours and tickets are not interchangeable with Art Night's.

Plan the whole last-train journey, not one station departure

Roppongi has the Tokyo Metro Hibiya Line and the Toei Oedo Line. Use the correct direction and Saturday/holiday timetable, then check every transfer to your accommodation.

There is no single useful "Roppongi last train" for every visitor. A later departure can be useless if the connecting line has already finished. Save your hotel address and a complete route, and set a reminder to leave the artwork early enough to reach the platform.

The event's overnight hours do not establish extra all-night rail service. If you want to watch the 1.30am performance, arrange the later journey separately. Likewise, do not assume the event's 6am finish matches the first convenient train to your particular hotel or airport.

What the special overnight GO Economy service covers

The organizer's access page announces special GO Economy operation from 1am to 7am on November 1. The Japanese notice writes the start as October 31 at 25:00: that means the following morning, not 1am at the start of October 31.

The special arrangement is limited to departures from the Roppongi event area. Destinations must be inside GO Economy's service area, with rides roughly within 10km. It is not a confirmed transfer to every Tokyo hotel, Narita or Haneda.

The organizer also advertises a limited JPY1,000 coupon from the festival information centre, one per person while supplies last. Treat the displayed sample fares as estimates, not your guaranteed price. A coupon does not reserve a vehicle.

GO's own service guidance adds practical limits: a reservation can cover up to two seats, journeys may be shared, and payment uses GO Pay. The service uses selected pickup and drop-off spots. Suitcases are not permitted; check the full baggage conditions before relying on it.

Set up the app and payment method before the night, then check whether it offers a suitable ride for your actual destination. Four friends cannot assume that one two-seat booking carries the whole group. Keep a separate taxi or accommodation option if the service, account setup or available seats do not work for you. Do not assume a shop, station or hotel lobby permits overnight waiting or sleeping.

Family, access and weather decisions

For children, the afternoon building project and an early presentation are easier to combine than a full overnight route. Use the actual activity conditions, not a general "family-friendly" label. Our Japan with kids guide covers the wider holiday.

Save the current event map, check the weather and bring a suitable outer layer and rain protection. Leave walking time between venues, keep pavements clear and follow staff directions around performances. Check individual entry and accessibility arrangements if you need a step-free route or somewhere to sit. Neither a free programme nor a nearby station guarantees those facilities at every temporary location.

This is a scheduled art event, not a general invitation to a street party. If the group separates, name a precise meeting point and agree when to use it rather than depending entirely on messages in a busy area.

Mobile data for programme changes and the ride home

Keep the map, hotel address and ordinary confirmations offline, but have a connection available for programme changes, live routes and ride bookings. Charge the phone before leaving and carry a power bank. Mobile data does not complete a ride-app registration, supply a payment method or guarantee a car.

For a Japan-only trip, OpenSim's Japan plans let you compare a small country-specific allowance with your home provider's roaming charge. The public catalog checked on October 26 listed 1GB for seven days at USD1.40 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.40, both eligible for top-up. Confirm the selected plan's current terms before paying.

That is a useful fit for a visitor who needs maps and messages without coverage for countries outside the itinerary. It is not proof that OpenSim is always cheapest or that any mobile plan can prevent congestion. Included roaming may already meet your needs. Use the Japan eSIM comparison guide, data calculator, phone compatibility guide and installation timing guide to make the choice before departure.

Checked October 26, 2026 against the linked organizer, museum, rail-operator and GO pages. Recheck individual programme locations and times, reservations, transport and weather on October 31. Update this page for material programme, admission or overnight-service changes. The festival's general dates do not confirm every stop's availability.
