Rossio Christmas Market 2026: dates, train and Metro access

Lisbon's Rossio Christmas Market is announced for November 13-December 21, 2026, with free entry at Praca Dom Pedro IV. The market opens at 10:00, while the free Christmas train starts later, at 15:00 on the regular timetable. A current dispute over use of the square makes a same-day opening and access check worthwhile, especially for the first weekend.
The closing date matters if you are planning a Christmas holiday. December 24 and 25 are outside Rossio's announced season. Do not book a late-December Lisbon stay assuming this particular market will still be running.

Rossio market dates and Christmas train hours
The ADBP organizer's programme separates shopping hours from train hours. Visit Lisboa's 2026 listing confirms the November 13-December 21 season and free admission.
| What you are visiting | Sunday-Thursday | Friday, Saturday and holiday eves |
|---|---|---|
| Market | 10:00-22:00 | 10:00-23:00 |
| Free Christmas train | 15:00-22:00 | 15:00-23:00 |
All times are local. A closing time is not a promise that you can join the final train at that minute.
For a child who mainly wants the train, a morning visit is the wrong choice. Arrive during its operating period and leave room for a queue rather than promising a ride immediately before dinner or a departure.
The organizer's page currently gives conflicting November 13 and 14 references for the inaugural train departure. Confirm the opening-day arrangement directly before making a special trip. The regular afternoon timetable is more useful for planning later visits than an unconfirmed first departure.
Is the market opening affected by the Rossio dispute?
In a report updated at 00:01 on November 7, RTP describes a November 6 city order requiring an encampment to leave Rossio so the Christmas market can be installed. It also reports a legal challenge. That report does not establish that the camp has left, that a court has resolved the dispute, or that the market has been cancelled.
Treat Rossio as the announced location, with the opening and onsite arrangement still worth checking before departure. Follow current organizer notices and directions at the square; do not rely on a previous year's stall map or a photograph to choose an entrance.
If your whole outing depends on the first evening, keep a dinner or indoor alternative that does not require the market to be operating. There is no need to abandon a wider Lisbon trip because one attraction's setup remains uncertain.
What kind of Christmas visit does Rossio suit?
The tourism listing describes craft stalls, sweets, gifts, a Santa house and an electric Christmas train. Plan a browse and a snack, with the train as an optional extra. Do not assume that every stall sells locally handmade goods or that every advertised feature is available throughout the day.
Rossio is a different outing from Wonderland in Parque Eduardo VII. Choose Rossio for a stop during a downtown walk rather than expecting the square to provide a full afternoon of fairground rides. Separate events have separate calendars and attractions.
With younger children, choose one priority before you arrive. If it is the train, go after 15:00 and eat beforehand. If it is gift shopping, a daytime visit avoids having to keep a tired child awake for an evening outing. For both, leave a flexible break between them.
Do not build your visit around an exact train route, ride duration, Santa meeting or parade time unless the current programme confirms it. Older Rossio programmes remain online alongside newer information.
Which Metro station should you use?
| Station | Line | Useful distinction |
|---|---|---|
| Rossio Metro | Green | The official station page places it at Praca da Figueira, beside the Rossio area |
| Restauradores Metro | Blue | An alternative at Praca dos Restauradores if it fits your starting point |
| Rossio railway station | Suburban rail | A different service from both the Metro and the Christmas train |
Use Metro Lisboa's date-and-time journey planner for your hotel-to-market route. A familiar station name is not enough to identify the right network.
The Rossio station page lists the main station's normal hours as 06:30-01:00, but its east concourse closes at 21:30 and is closed on weekends and holidays. That is a concourse restriction, not a statement that the whole station is shut every weekend. Follow signs for the available entrance rather than repeatedly trying a closed one.
Restauradores also lists normal station hours of 06:30-01:00. These hours do not guarantee a particular last connection to your destination. Check line status and your return journey separately, especially if you are staying outside central Lisbon.
If you need a step-free journey, confirm the current lift status and the usable entrance before travelling. Neither a station symbol nor the market's free entry establishes that the entire route will suit a wheelchair or stroller.
A manageable family stop in downtown Lisbon
Allow roughly 60-90 minutes as a starting plan for browsing and a snack, rather than treating that as a guaranteed time to finish everything. Add time if the train is important. A long queue can easily change the plan.
One workable sequence is to arrive in the afternoon, find the operating entrance, browse together and decide about the train before joining a queue. Arrange dinner separately so the outing does not depend on finding a suitable stall at the moment everyone becomes hungry.
For a wet day, shorten the outdoor visit and keep an indoor break nearby. Bring layers and footwear with grip; do not plan around snow or dry pavements. Ask about toilets and changing facilities when you arrive instead of assuming temporary market facilities have the same provision as a permanent attraction.
Pick a meeting point away from the flow of visitors, then save it on both adults' phones. For children who carry a phone, agree what to do if separated before anyone starts browsing. A map pin is more useful than "by the train" if the boarding arrangement changes.
For a longer holiday, the Portugal with kids guide helps with wider family routes and travel logistics. You do not need to turn a short market visit into a full day of transfers across Lisbon.
Maps, train information and mobile data
Save your accommodation address, the Metro planner link and the organizer's page before leaving. Download an offline map, but check current notices while connected: a saved map does not know whether an entrance or service has changed.
An OpenSim Portugal plan can provide a separate travel-data allowance for live directions and family messaging if your usual roaming package is expensive or excludes Portugal. Current examples are 1GB for seven days at USD1.14 and 3GB for 15 days at USD3.00, both listed as eligible for top-up. Check the selected plan's current price and terms before buying.
If Portugal is already included in your usual allowance, that may be simpler than buying anything extra. OpenSim is useful when a separate allowance fits your trip; it does not reserve a train place or guarantee better reception in a busy square.
Use the travel data calculator for your whole holiday rather than estimating from this one outing. Check phone compatibility and installation timing before departure so setup does not interrupt the visit.
