Saily Cruise eSIM: 200+ ships, port and at-sea limits

August 10, 2026. Saily launched dedicated cruise data plans on June 23 for more than 200 vessels. The new plan type is materially different from an ordinary country or regional travel plan: it connects through a shipboard maritime cellular network while the vessel is in open water.

The headline needs two current qualifications. Saily says the Cruise section is being rolled out gradually and may not appear for every account. It also says the plan works only on selected cruises and does not connect in port or within 12 nautical miles of the coast.

The traveler decision: Saily's cruise plan can fill the at-sea gap on an eligible ship. It is not one plan for the entire holiday. Confirm the exact cruise in the app, protect the home SIM from maritime roaming charges, and arrange a separate land plan for the airport, embarkation city and port days.

What Saily launched for cruise passengers

The June 23 announcement describes dedicated data plans for more than 200 ships. Launch reporting named vessels operated by major groups and brands including Royal Caribbean, Celebrity, Carnival, Princess, Holland America, Norwegian, MSC, Disney, Virgin Voyages, Cunard and P&O.

That brand list is not a guarantee for every ship or sailing. Saily's newer cruise-plan help page tells buyers to open the Cruise section, select the option to see available cruise lines and confirm that their cruise is supported before paying.

The same help page says rollout is gradual. If the Cruise section does not appear under Add data, Saily says cruise plans are not yet available for that account. A public Saily webpage does not currently provide an equivalent live vessel selector or checkout.

Where the Saily cruise plan works

A cruise crosses three connectivity zones. Treat them separately.

Saily's own answer to a Bahamas-port question was explicit: the cruise plan works at sea, not in port. The company recommended a separate Bahamas or Caribbean land plan for that part of the itinerary. The same logic applies to Mediterranean, Alaska, Northern Europe and other multi-port cruises.

🏆 Roaming eSIM wins for airports and port days: it uses terrestrial partner networks where Saily's cruise plan is designed not to connect. Saily wins only for supported at-sea segments because ordinary country and regional Roaming eSIM plans do not include maritime networks.

It uses shipboard cellular, not direct-to-phone satellite

Some launch discussions describe the phone as connecting to a satellite. That shorthand skips the part that matters for setup.

The handset connects to a small cellular network installed on the ship. That network carries traffic back to land through satellite infrastructure. It behaves like a roaming mobile network from the phone's point of view, which is why Saily tells users to look for operator labels such as 901-18, WMS or Cellular at Sea.

This is not the same as a recent phone connecting directly to a non-terrestrial satellite service. It does not require a satellite-capable handset, but it does require:

• an unlocked phone that supports eSIM;
• a Saily cruise plan for the selected vessel;
• the phone's cellular radio to remain on; and
• data roaming to be enabled for the Saily line.

The Cellular at Sea FAQ confirms that Airplane Mode must be off for this type of service. It also explains why a home line can create an expensive mistake: if that line is allowed to join the ship's network, its carrier may bill maritime voice, text or data roaming separately.

Saily cruise prices reported at launch

Saily does not expose a current cruise-plan price table on its public website. The four launch offers were reported as follows:

These are launch-reported prices, not a promise of the current app total. Check the allowance, validity, currency, vessel and final price inside the Saily app before purchase. The 500MB plan suits a single light-use sea day; it can disappear quickly if photo backup, software updates or video autoplay remain enabled.

The offers are fixed data allowances. In a recent provider response on its launch discussion, Saily said it did not offer an unlimited cruise plan. It also said the connection stops when the allowance is exhausted and the customer must manually buy more data. That response is useful current guidance, but the plan screen and terms at checkout remain the final record.

Install before boarding and protect the home SIM

Saily's general activation instructions say the device must be unlocked and eSIM-compatible, the Saily app should be installed, and internet access is needed for initial setup. Its data-plan help says installation and activation should take place within 30 days of purchase.

For a cruise, prepare while reliable home or hotel Wi-Fi is available:

1. Open the Saily app and confirm that the Cruise section appears for the account.
2. Use the in-app list to confirm the exact cruise, not only the parent cruise line.
3. Check the data, validity, price and any plan-specific instructions before paying.
4. Install the Saily profile and confirm that the phone is unlocked and supports eSIM.
5. Label the lines clearly, such as Home and Saily Cruise.
6. Before the ship's maritime network turns on, disable the home line or confirm a cruise package with the home carrier.
7. Select Saily as the cellular-data line, enable data roaming for Saily and disable cellular-data switching.
8. Keep Airplane Mode off when trying to connect at sea.
9. Look for 901-18, WMS or Cellular at Sea after the ship passes the published coverage boundary.

Do not enable data roaming on both lines as a shortcut. The Saily line needs it because the maritime network is a roaming partner. The home line may use the same network under a completely different retail tariff.

If keeping the usual number active is essential, ask the home carrier exactly how incoming calls, voicemail and received messages are charged on a cruise ship. A phone can generate background traffic or voicemail charges without an obvious browsing session. The safest bill-control option at sea is to switch the home line off.

Calls, SMS, hotspot and speed are not fully documented

Saily markets the cruise offer as a data plan. The checked cruise help page does not say that it includes a local number, carrier voice minutes or SMS. Plan on using WhatsApp, FaceTime, Signal or another data-based service, and do not depend on carrier SMS for time-sensitive authentication unless the home-line cost is understood.

Saily publishes a general hotspot guide for its travel service, but the checked cruise page does not make a cruise-specific tethering promise. Before buying for a laptop or a second person, inspect the in-app plan terms or ask support to confirm hotspot use on that exact cruise offer. Even where tethering works, every device draws from the same small allowance.

Saily also does not publish a guaranteed cruise speed. Maritime performance can vary with the ship's equipment, satellite backhaul, location, weather and passenger demand. Two early Reddit reports point in opposite directions: one Disney Mediterranean passenger said the plan never connected, while a later Alaska passenger said it worked at sea but was slower than on land. Those are individual anecdotes, not a reliability test or representative success rate.

Use small cruise allowances for messaging, email, light browsing and essential account checks. Ship Wi-Fi may be a better fit for repeated video calls, streaming, large uploads, multiple devices or work that cannot tolerate an uncertain cellular connection. What to do if the Saily cruise plan does not connect

Start with the coverage conditions before changing the profile:

1. Confirm that the ship is more than 12 nautical miles from the coast.
2. Confirm that the exact ship or cruise still appears as supported in the app.
3. Check that the Saily line is on, selected for cellular data and allowed to use data roaming.
4. Confirm Airplane Mode is off and cellular-data switching is off.
5. Look for 901-18, WMS or Cellular at Sea in network settings.
6. Restart the phone and follow Saily's current APN guidance if the maritime network appears but data does not work.
7. Capture screenshots of the plan, ship selection, operator label, location context and error.
8. Contact Saily through in-app live chat or its email form while another internet connection is available.

There is a practical support problem at sea: if the cruise plan is the only planned connection and it fails, live chat may be unreachable. Save the order details, support link and troubleshooting steps offline. If possible, use port connectivity or ship Wi-Fi to contact support without deleting the profile.

Saily cruise refund terms after activation

Saily's current refund page says a customer may request a full refund within 30 days when the eSIM has not been installed or the data plan has not been activated.

After installation and activation, a full refund is not guaranteed. Saily says it may consider a full or partial refund when a provider-related quality problem prevented meaningful use, or when more than 99% of the data remains. Eligibility and the amount are decided under the current terms, so a failure to connect is not an automatic refund.

Document the issue before the plan expires. Submit the request through Saily's website and keep the order record, ship, sailing date, screenshots and support transcript. Do not wait until the trip is over if the plan is already active and failing.

Saily's public cruise documentation conflicts

The newer dedicated cruise help page says the product is live and explains its maritime network. An older Saily general FAQ still says the service has no plan that works on cruises.

The newer, cruise-specific page is the more relevant current document, and Saily's June launch confirms the product exists. The stale FAQ can still mislead a traveler or a search system. Saily should update it, and buyers should use the current app plan screen as the final record for availability and terms.

The same caution applies to Saily's own GigSky comparison, which was reviewed before the new product launched and still marks Saily as lacking Cellular at Sea connectivity. It should not be used to judge Saily's current cruise availability.

Saily cruise plan, ship Wi-Fi or Roaming eSIM

No single option wins every part of a cruise.

Both checked packages were marked reloadable in the public catalog. That does not mean every Roaming eSIM package can be topped up; reloadability is shown on the selected card.

For a Mediterranean itinerary, compare the named countries on a Europe Roaming eSIM with every port. For a Caribbean or Alaska trip that includes the United States and Canada, check the North America Roaming eSIM. A Global Roaming eSIM can simplify a route that crosses regions, but only the destinations listed on the selected plan are included.

Ten questions travelers ask about Saily cruise plans

1. Does the Saily cruise plan work on every ship from a listed cruise line? No blanket promise is published. Confirm the exact cruise in the app before purchase.
2. Why can I not see the Cruise section? Saily says rollout is gradual. If the section is absent under Add data, the plan is not currently available for that account.
3. Does it work in ports or the Bahamas? The cruise plan does not connect in port or within 12 nautical miles of the coast. Use a separate land plan for port days.
4. When does it activate? Saily says the cruise plan connects only after the eligible ship passes the 12-nautical-mile boundary. Check the in-app plan for its exact validity trigger and period.
5. Is it direct satellite service to my phone? No. The phone connects to a cellular network on the ship, and that network uses satellite backhaul.
6. Should Airplane Mode be on? No, not while trying to use maritime cellular data. Disable or protect the home line separately to avoid its cruise-roaming charges.
7. Does it include calls, SMS or a local number? The checked cruise page describes data service and does not publish included carrier voice, SMS or a local number. Use data apps and verify any add-on separately.
8. Can I use hotspot? Saily has general hotspot guidance but no cruise-specific promise on the checked page. Confirm the exact plan before relying on tethering.
9. What happens when the data runs out? Saily's recent provider response says the connection stops and more data must be purchased manually. It said no unlimited cruise plan was available at that time.
10. Can I get a refund if it never connects? A refund is not automatic after activation. Saily may consider a full or partial refund for a provider-related quality problem or when more than 99% remains.

Sources and updates

The launch date and 200-plus-vessel footprint came from Saily's June 23 announcement. The current cruise help page was used for gradual rollout, app access, exact-cruise checking, maritime networks, the 12-nautical-mile boundary and the operator labels shown on the phone.

Saily's activation, plan-management and refund pages were checked for device preparation, the 30-day setup window, data roaming, support access and refund limits. Cellular at Sea's current FAQ was used to verify the shipboard-cellular model, satellite backhaul, Airplane Mode requirement and home-carrier charge risk.

Launch prices are labeled as reported figures because the live Saily cruise checkout is app-only.
