Samsung adds eSIM bootstrap connectivity to Galaxy Z phones in the US
Samsung and NTT Transatel have introduced eSIM bootstrap connectivity for the latest Galaxy Z series in the United States. The service gives a new phone a temporary cellular path during its first setup, including device activation, software updates and carrier enrollment when Wi-Fi is unavailable.
This is useful at a store, airport or any other place where joining Wi-Fi is difficult. It is not a free travel plan, a permanent mobile subscription or confirmation that every Galaxy Z phone now includes data abroad.
What travelers need to know: the bootstrap connection helps a new Galaxy reach the point where normal service can be installed or enrolled. Once setup is complete, the traveler still needs an active home-carrier plan, a destination plan such as Roaming eSIM, or both.
What Samsung's eSIM bootstrap connection actually does
The September 2 announcement says NTT Transatel's network is being used during Galaxy onboarding. The connection can support five jobs:
- activating the device;
- authenticating the setup session;
- downloading software updates needed during setup;
- enrolling with a carrier; and
- provisioning the service that the user selects.
In practical terms, the phone can get online before its regular mobile service is ready. This closes an awkward gap in the setup process: downloading a carrier profile normally requires a connection, but a new phone may not yet have a working SIM and the buyer may not have suitable Wi-Fi.
Transatel's technical page says a bootstrap profile is preloaded during manufacturing. For consumer phones, it describes the connection as temporary access used to reach the operational service. That makes it different from a travel eSIM profile bought for maps, messaging and ordinary data use during a trip.
The first rollout is limited to the United States
The enhanced service will first appear on Samsung's latest Galaxy Z series in the United States. Samsung and NTT Transatel say they plan to extend it to selected future Galaxy phones.
The announcement does not provide:
- an exact model-number list;
- the participating retailers or self-service channels;
- a consumer data allowance or time limit;
- a date for expansion beyond the first devices; or
- a list of future countries.

Bootstrap connectivity does not replace a travel eSIM
The names sound similar because both use the phone's embedded SIM technology. They solve different problems.

The bootstrap connection may help the phone download a carrier profile. It does not mean the carrier has accepted the account, unlocked the device or included international roaming. Those are separate conditions.
What happens when you switch on a new Galaxy while traveling
Buying or replacing a phone during a trip is where this feature may be most helpful. If the eligible Galaxy can reach the bootstrap network, it may complete setup without relying on hotel, airport or shop Wi-Fi. The process still needs care.
First, finish the device's security and software steps. Then check whether the home line has transferred correctly. Do not erase or trade in the old phone until calls, messages and account verification work on the new one. Carrier transfer policies vary, and a profile that worked on the old phone may require a fresh download or carrier approval.
Next, open Settings, Connections and SIM manager. The exact labels can vary by software version. Confirm that the expected profiles appear and that the phone is unlocked before adding a travel plan. Finally, select the data line deliberately. Keep the home line available if you need its number, but turn off data roaming on that line when you do not want home-carrier data charges. The live United States catalog returned 37 package choices when checked on September 3. The selected product card provides the current price, validity, speed label, reloadability and a persistent checkout link. Those fields matter after onboarding because a bootstrap profile does not publish a traveler-facing allowance or trip duration.

No such benefit was announced. The connection is described as setup and service-provisioning access, not an allowance for normal travel use.
Can the bootstrap connection replace Wi-Fi during setup?
That is one of its intended uses. The announcement says eligible phones can complete onboarding where Wi-Fi is not readily available. It does not promise that every setup step or account issue will work without another connection.
